Sharpening Knives
« on: December 09, 2006, 07:07:10 AM »

I finally have ventured over here from Stitcher's Guild and have a question for you kitchen experts...

I was given some very nice knives as a wedding present 25 years ago. Guess what - they need sharpening!

Does anyone have a sharpener they would recommend? Is taking them to a pro the best way to go? Any tips appreciated.
I've always used the steel on them and they have kept a good edge, but I would like to have them slice like new again...then they should be good for another 25 years, right?

Robyn,
I have lots of very sharp knives
in my kitchen.
DH usually sharpens them all for me on a sharpening stone.
Recently he bought another sharpener for me to use.
It sits on my kitchen counter.
I will ask DH for the name of it and post it later.  Wink

Robyn,
the sharpener on my kitchen counter is in one of
the wood knife holders with no name on it.
But DH took this
Knife Sharpener
out of the drawer to show me.
He highly recommends it. Wink

Pina, This sounds exactly like what DH would like!  He's continually complaining about my dull knives, and even though the grocery store meat dept. will sharpen them if I bring them in, can I ever remember?  Of course not.  Roll Eyes

Congratulations on being a Moderator!  Smiley I just noticed.  Very cool! Cool

That's typical.  A dull knife requires more force to cut, and is harder to control = a potentially deadly combination.  Sad

Pina, We went to the hardware store and I got one of those sharpeners and have now sharpened quite a few knives.  Smiley  Thank you, and please thank your DH for me, as well!  I haven't actually tried to cut anything yet, but I slice bread every day, so we'll soon see.  DH says they seem much sharper, and he's especially pleased because we'll be able to sharpen the hatchet.  Roll Eyes  It's about the dullest thing you can imagine, but luckily we don't seem to need it often.  It's in the car just in case we need to sharpen some stakes to pound in the ground.  You never know....  I also keep orange flags handy. Pina,

I have to report on the knife sharpening.

Smiley  Grin  Shocked What a success!!!  Shocked  Grin  Smiley

It's wonderful to have sharp knives again, and DL is so right; we only cut ourselves with the dull ones. Roll Eyes  DH is very pleased (so am I) and I feel like we could actually have some good knives now and keep them sharp.

Thank you again! Smiley

Thank you for the product referral, Pina!
And thanks, Liana, for pre-testing!
This sounds like a winner....and won't take up a lot of space, either. Cheesy I will pick one up as soon as we get back from vacation.

I just wanted to report that I got one of these little gadgets and really like it! It does the job, and even better, doesn't take up any counter space. Thanks for the suggestion!
