So, what stores in your area, do you recommend for picking up culinary stuff. I have a couple that are worth going out of the way to visit.

For starters:

Le Gourmet Chef

These folks are located in the outlet mall at Anthem (take I-17 north out of Phoenix to Anthem, you can't miss it). They carry a good supply of just about all the professional grade brands, and their sales are killer. I recently picked up a Calphalon 11" Chef's Skillet/w cover (list price 185.00) for 29.95! They don't always have deals like that, but they always have specials, which makes it worth stopping whenever you can.

They look pretty good.  We have Kitchen Collection and Corning/Revere in our local outlet mall.  They don't have the bargains that they used to have, particularly on small appliances.  But you can still find interesting gadgets and closeouts.  Speaking of Chicago Cutlery, I like their outlet, too.  My santoku is their's and a nice quality though inexpensive.  I also got some of their cheap knives as a gift which....fall in the disposable knives category.

I end up doing a lot of my pre-shopping at least online.  I read a lot of consumer reviews before I buy something.  If a lot of people are complaining about the same thing I think it's generally a pretty good bet that it's not going to make me happy.  Still, I like to see what I'm buying in person.

Alton Brown is always recommending "your local restaurant supply store."  Does anyone have one?  I'm sure there must be some around.  Have you shopped at them?  I just googled one in Springfield and now I'm really curious to go check them out.

There are no decent restaurant suppliers in Prescott, but there are tons in Phoenix.

I love the little store at Haji Baba's restaurant in Tempe.  I hope to get back there soon for some of their coffee and spices.

Never been there, but then I very rarely go to Tempe. Where is it?

Haji Baba's
1513 E. Apache Blvd., Tempe, AZ
Phone: 602-966-4672

It's Arabian or mediterranean food; and I just love it.  Whenever we go, I order everything in sight -even if I have to buy a cooler to take it home.

And one room is a little grocery with homemade-style packages of herbs and spices, imported soaps and what-have-you.

If you go, try the Kubideh(?) and cucumber-and-yogurt salad.  I can't remember what it's called, but I love it. I like it so well I bought a package of the spices, but while cleaning the kitchen I spilled it and have to go get some more.  Cry

Hell, Char's is worth the trip, to me.  My best friend used to fly in from New York every 6 months or so just so she could eat at Char's.

She endeared herself to the cook forever by ordering straight thai chilis on the side. Smiley

Sur la Table (next to my grocery store yet in Newport Beach...)  I nearly always walk in to see what's new...

Williams-Sonoma is a bit farther away in the SouthCoast Plaza mall in Costa Mesa.

Both of them are a little on the pricey side, but you know they'll be fun to shop in.  I had the most amazing luck and found a very large Demeyer Scirroco stock pot at our local Marshall's at approximately 1/4 to 1/3 of the price I would have had to pay at Sur la Table...  The pot is great, but that it was a bargain makes it even better--and that it matches other scirroco pieces is the "cherry on top"!
