Title: Tailoring supplies in Boston area?
Post by: BetsyV on April 09, 2006, 10:11:40 AM
I am looking for that bias hem interfacing for tailored jacket sleeve and bottom hems and plain weave stay tape. I found hair canvas and felted wool for the undercollar at Fabric Place in Framingham, but they didn't have anything more obscure than that for tailoring. I have used hair canvas strips cut on the bias, but my next project uses a superfine worsted merino wool I bought years ago at Liberty's of London, and it will be much too stiff for the weight of this fabric.

I found a couple of NYC sources I can order via the internet, but if there is anyone left here in Boston who sells this stuff, I would just as soon buy a few yards at a time than 100 yards. I am only making clothes for myself, I am not a professional tailor by any means!

Thanks for your help,

Alas Betsy, the only place that may carry tailoring supplies in Boston these days is Windsor Button, and then I think that is pretty unlikely.  I buy mine from Greenberg and Hammer, SewTrue and others in NYC.  You might also try Sew Low in Cambridge, but that's hit or miss.  If you go on the internet, Banasch's in OH also has very good quality tailoring supplies.

I second SewTrue on the net. They sell many things by the yard!

Thank you both for the feedback. I had found SewTrue and another one in NYC, but I will check out Banasch's also before I order anything. It's good to get positive feedback on the internet shopping sites before ordering.

I have a blouse project before I start on the fancy suit so I have time to wait for delivery - I have a new (to me) sewing machine and want to be more comfortable with it before I get into a complicated project.

Thanks again,
