Starting out the new topic, since we were up to 20 pages in the former one.

Maybe now I can get caught up.

Nah.  But I have been enjoying all the activity, even if I haven't been able to reply.

Today, I'm (still) working on that Burda WOF blouse, but this time in the good fabric after testing things out in a semi-wearable version. I say semi-wearable because it will be wearable but won't really do the style lines any justice. I think I'll finish it later and then donate it

Debbie, it will be great to see that blouse made up.  It's still in my "to do" pile.  I haven't even traced off the pattern yet.

I just posted photos of a tote bag that I finished today.  It will go into my "for a future giftee" pile--a group of gifts that I keep for unexpected occasions or hostess gifts.  I stitched out the "Big Girl" design that was so highly chatted up in the "Chatter" section of SG a few months back.  It's a funny saying, and will certainly not be a gift for folks without a sense of humor.

Here is a link to the tote:

Green Silk Doupioni-Trimmed Tote (http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/fzxdoc/album?.dir=/56f7re2)

That's one thing about machine embroidering a design like that--the embroidery part is easy, the making of the tote takes forever!  I could have made a dress in the same amount of time it took to design and assemble the simple tote!

Kathryn---that is one cute tote---the stitchout is excellent---I have a Birthday coming soon  ;D ::)

Debbie- I am enjoying your website---I have to thank you for the "ending coverstich technique" ----excellent tip.  Before you do coverstich hems, do you just press in place, use steam-a-seam, pin----?  I must look back in the files to see which WOF blouse you are making.

Thanks so much everyone for all the very kind comments on my wedding outfit!

Good news... I cut the fabric! And better news... there was plenty of it, so I have extra seam allowances and hem for "just in case".

Marianne (and all), I have a friend here, a design colleague, who will be helping me with the sewing (I worked with her on her daughter's gown two summers ago). And my Mother will be here mid next week to help as well. So while it is getting on to the big day (and honestly... I don't know where the time went!) I am in good shape to get done. And I have thought this through so thoroughly that I know just how to proceed from seam finishes to trim choices.
So hopefully... no sewing in the vestibule will be necessary!  :D

Kathryn, I am wearing the cap mostly as is. I will put some fabric flowers across the back to finish that edge off.
This is my Mother's wedding cap from 1959. It is covered in tiny satin calla lily shapes. I will probably be the last daughter to marry, and none of us were, or are, able to wear my Mother's gown (she was 5'2" and 95 lbs when she married). So this is my nod to her.
I may or may not have the knitted piece. It's not as important as the dress (duh), and mostly it was a cover-up for my disliked upper arms. But I decided what the heck... a) it's August and hot and b) nobody is going to care about my arms... I'm the bride and they *have* to admire me.   ;D  Besides, Jeff loves me as I am, flabby arms and all and that's good enough for me.
However I was hoping to have two scarves knitted of the same yarn (different colors) to gift the Mothers with. So I'm knitting those anyway (I knit where I can; home, waiting for food, in lines, at the ballpark). And if it happens, it happens. If not, I've got a start on Christmas!  ;)

Carolyn, no apology necessary! It's not quite your usual white gown. And I'm not quite the usual young bride. I'm getting married, for my first time, at 46. I still kind of can't believe it. I wouldn't say I had given up the idea of ever marrying... but I sure wasn't expecting it anymore.

In the long run... whether I have a dress or not, whether we have enough food at the reception or not, whether it's a beautiful day or the torrents pour... I don't care. I have the papers, the officiator and the man I love... nothing else matters.

Although, I *am* going to have that dress done!  8)

Kathleen, I'm rooting for you to get it all together with time to spare.  Best wishes for a day that is picture perfect and for a married life with that special guy that is picture perfect as well!  There's nothing quite like falling in love at an age when you know what you are doing!  ;)

Thanks, Deirdre, Carolyn, and Linda L, for the cheerful compliments on the simple little tote.  Linda, that design came from www.embroidables.com .  It's part of a set, if that interests you as well.  Here's the link:

Carolyn and Deirdre, that gift list is getting pretty long!  ;D

Don't look very far ... it's the same one that you posted a pic of. Except my frontal area (all areas, actually!) is much fuller than the model's and so I have adjustments. There are progress pics of my muslin on my blog. http://stitchesandseams.blogspot.com/ If I'm lucky, there will be pics of the final there soon too.

Ah, and nowI want an embroidery machine!!!!! I do, I do!! I never thought that I would really want one until I had little people around to sew for again, but after looking through that embroidery site, I want one!!! ;D

What brand/model do you ladies have? As I was looking ..and ah-ing..over your cute, cute, cute tote , Kathryn..my husband walked through the room and admired it also. Said I should buy a machine, just so I, too, could make a cute, cute, cute tote. What a keeper!

The availability of space could be a problem. Although I have a designated room in which to sew, I also have in there, a large cutting table, a press, a serger, a tv, 2 multi drawer chests for notions and tools and, of course, my sewing machine in a cabinet that  can extend when using it to quilt, which I really don't do that often. And, thanks to Debbie Cook  ;D..really, thank you, Debbie.. I am looking at a Babylock Coverstitch machine. I have a Babylock serger and I love it. Have a Bernina sewing machine and love it. So, tell me a bit about your embroidery machines...storing the threads alone gives me pause!

Oh..and you don't need to use a computer with these do you. A deal breaker for me given my level of talent with a computer!

I want, I want!

Title: Re: Sharing, Inspiration, and Project Photos III
Post by: fzxdoc on July 31, 2006, 05:51:49 AM
Well, FranG, you may have been bitten by that bug.  I blame my bug bites on Barb (BJMoran) and AnnR, because of their beautiful embroidery on garments.

I bought the Janome 300E because it is an embroidery-only machine, and because it was much less expensive than a combination sewing/embroidery machine, which I didn't need.  I love my sewing machines, and didn't need a third one, so the embroidery-only option was a great one.

I am delighted with it.  It stitches beautifully and is easy to use, right out of the box. It comes with a "how to" video, which was all I needed, but of course the dealer offers classes, which I have yet to take.

You will want to use a computer with it to get designs like the "Big Girl" one that I used into the embroidery machine.  You buy a design like that from a website and download it immediately to your computer.  Then you transfer it from your computer to your embroidery machine using your USB port, the same one you use for your digital camera.  Your dealer will show you the gizmo you need to do the transferring.  It's really not hard.  Some of the higher end embroidery machines hook directly up to the computer so you don't need the little transfer gizmo.

Then, when you have your embroidery machine, you go to the Machine Embroidery topic here on SG and ask away about anything that you need to know.  Everyone has been so helpful to me.

Thread was another issue for me as well, since I have a formidable collection already of both poly and silk threads for garment sewing and didn't want to clutter up my sewing room with another huge thread rack.  I bought this awesome Madeira thread collection for half price at a great sale that Hancock Fabrics online was having over the Memorial Day weekend.  It comes in a really nice wooden box with drawers and has a wonderful array of thread colors:

Madeira thread treasure box (http://hancockfabricstore.stores.yahoo.net/mathboxtrchw.html)

I also got a free sewing machine trolley with the deal.  I don't haul my machines to class, but if I ever do, I have just the thing to do it with!

Anyway, that thread collection box is only about 15 inches square (and 6 inches deep), so it doesn't take up much room at all.  I store it under my machine table, a small folding table that I bought at Sam's Club (like a Costco), which is perfect.

I have yet to use the machine for embellishing garments, but have had great fun making up stitchouts for gifts like the tote bag or the Barbecue Apron (click here) (http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/fzxdoc/album?.dir=5b77re2&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/fzxdoc/my_photos) that I made a little while back.

Deirdre's awesome trompe d'oeil watch on the black tee alone would have put me over the edge, were I still considering the purchase of an embroidery machine!

OK, I've done all the enabling that I can do for one morning, Fran.  I'll leave you to work on the rationalization for your new toy  ;D.

Nora, glad to see others here that try just about everything.   I have a loom and two spinning wheels.  I tried the drop spindle, but just couldn't quite get it.   Those that do use the drop spindle well swear by it as it is so portable.   Though, I cannot imagine standing in line at the grocery store, spinning with it as some people say they do.   I probably seem strange enough as it is

Dierdre, this made me laugh. Seriously though, I was just telling a friend of mine who's interested in spinning that using a drop spindle is a bit of a pain. Aside from the skill issue, it just seems tedious to have to stop and wind up your yarn every time the spindle hits the floor. Even more tedious if you happen to be short -- my mom would really be out of luck >:D Anyway, I have a pile of dirty fleece that has now been fluffed, and is waiting to be carded. My homework was to sort (fluff), card, and roll about half a pillowcase full of "in the grease" wool. I'm supposed to spin some of it with the drop spindle, but save most of it for this coming weekend, when we will try the wheel. The class was fun, as there were only two students and the instructor is very knowledgable. She's raised sheep before and was very patient and generous about answering my sheep raising questions, in addition to the matters at hand. And being the true fiber addict that I am, I walked out with about 8 ounces of the most gorgeous charcoal mohair, in addition to the wool we're using for the class. It's a beautiful "color" -- a blend of everything from white through to jet black, all as it comes off the animal, but much cleaner than the fleece I'm working with.

Must go. I'll have to check photo sites later; the computer didn't even get powered up this weekend.

Kathryn, LOVE that tote ! That's hysterical.  Must go buy that design right now, LOL.  I'm so glad it comes as a single!  (although the others are pretty cute too).  My sis definitely needs a tote with that on it for her b-day (in Nov. which gives me lots of time to procrastinate).

Hi Linda! (waves :D)

Angie, welcome to SG!  I'm glad you like that design.  It was first shown in Sew News a few months back, and then, on the Chatter topic here, someone mentioned it and posted the link to the Embroidables site.  I hopped right over and downloaded it, so I could feed it to my new embroidery machine.  The fun never stops!

Have fun making up the gift for your sis.  Make one for yourself, while you're at it! ;D

Kathryn, the tote is wonderful.  Between your new embroidery adventures and the treats posted by Ann and Barb, you are all going to get me embroidering yet.

Debbie, that blouse is still in my to do pile as well and I love following your progress.  Which reminds me I just saw a piece of fabric lying around and said "that will be perfect for that blouse Debbie is making" but I didn't write it down and now I wonder "which fabric" and "where is it".  Hopefully when I figure that out I will not progress to "what was I thinking?"

Nora good luck with the spinning.  I too would like to learn to spin (and weave and do machine embroidery and..and...and).  I tried a drop spindle once but ony for about half an hour. It did not come naturally, but I am sure all things take practice.  I think i would like to be able to spin so that I could use my maternal great-grandmother's spinning wheel, which currently resides at my mom's house, but which we would both like to see migrate up here eventually.

I am still working on my skirt.  I took a few days off and hope to finish today, after a run to the local sewing store for more thread.

Kaaren, thanks for the reminder about the Stonemountain open house. I saw your post in time, but I didn't make it yesterday. On Saturday I went to Poppy Fabrics, and I found so many gorgeous fabrics that I was paralyzed by indecision and ended up not buying anything! I will definitely be going back there, and checking out Stonemountain some time soon.

Vicky, let me add to the list of people who have complemented your twinset. That color is gorgeous on you. And I never would have thought to make a cami from a t-shirt pattern. How innovative, and how nice to use a TNT pattern that you know will fit.

Kathleen, I just know your wedding outfit is going to be beautiful. Congratulations and good luck! It's nice that people will be arriving soon to give you a hand.

Kathryn, that tote is so cute!

We still don't know when the rest of our things will be arriving. Some time between August 8 and August 17! We don't know when they'll narrow down that time frame. However, in going through some yet-unpacked boxes yesterday I realized I have my knitting stuff. Last fall I started teaching myself, and DH's photography professor from college sent me a huge box of wonderful yarns and needles and pattern books to help inspire me a couple months ago. So, if I can't sew, maybe I can get started on all those Christmas scarves I was hoping to do last year.

Stephanie

Speaking of knitting, a friend just sent me this, which I thought was cute: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall04/PATThallowig.html

Lots to catch up on after the weekend on this site!  I hope I don't miss anyone....

Kathleen, your wedding dress is going to be something special.  I can't wait to see the finished version.  Your design is very nice, and the fabrics are lovely.

Kathryn, LOL about that tote bag.  How funny!  I love it.  You never cease to amaze with your talent and the wide variety of projects you put it to use making.

Vicki, again, your twin set is lovely.  I should also clarify I guess about my kick pleat comment.  It isn't that I dislike a kick pleated skirt -- they just have to be the right fit for me to use a kick pleat.  The RTW coral suit that I saw had a skirt that reminded me of a grandma-ish suit look.  It was cut wide through the belly and hips with two pleats , and then tapered to the hem so that the hem was narrower than the hip if you were to close the kick pleat.  The length was about two inches below the knee.  I tend to not care for skirts with this cut for myself.  I tend to carry extra weight through the thighs and sides of my hips, not in the belly area so much, so the pleated belly ease looks poochy on me.  I also dislike a hem more narrow than the hip.  I tend to like a little more flare in my skirts, but all personal preference.

I am back to work on my green tweed jacket today.  I should finish this week and will post pictures.

Hello to all!  I can't believe all of the great sewing going on...despite the crazy 100 + temps around the country!  I should print out the postings to read because I could never remember names and projects.  So let me just say how much I am loving ALL of your photos and comments.

Stephanie, I'm glad your move went well and you are out in such a  beautiful spot of the USA.  But I'm also glad that you are a member of Red Sox Nation by the sound of it! I really like the wig/hat knitting directions and I also intend to pick up a copy of the Jon Krakauer book you wrote about. So keep blogging and posting such interesting stuff.

Wow!  Lots of progress everywhere!  What a treat to see all the good work going on, and Kathryn, you're sooooo far ahead of me on that tote bag!  (Hangs head in shame.)  But, now at least I have a good "pattern" to look at! ;D

I've been working on version 3 of the turquoise Marfy blouse #1101.  It's a poly chiffon, and it's going really well, except my sleeve alterations didn't quite fill the bill, so I will recut the sleeves.  Plenty of fabric, so that's not a problem, but I did think I'd finish today otherwise, and I have had NO time for sewing or anything else I really wanted to do today, so maybe this evening.... It's going really well otherwise though, and I love the fabric.

Ann, You had asked about the fit on the blouse, and I didn't know what to answer as I had done so very many dumb things on this, but now I think I know.  The turquoise is a 50 with no alterations.  I decided after that that I should have done a FBA for a better, more comfortable fit, and el stupo here just did an FBA on the 50 and merrily started sewing.  Well, it's very nice, but too big, as I had been using a lot of the back width for bust ease, and with the FBA of course didn't need it, and it was very uncomfortable.  It's going to a good home, and I'm sad to see it go, as it's cute fabric, but I learned my lesson the hard way. ::)  I traced off a 44 and did an FBA for the chiffon version, and it's just great.  The fit is very nice so far, although I added to the sleeves above the elbow, and that feels fine, but there's almost no ease below the elbow.  That's my fault (as usual) but will be fixed.  So, there's my report so far, and I hope I am at least encouraging others by allowing you all to say "Well, at least I didn't do that!"  ;D 8)

On top of all this, I've been fighting with my computer, and I think it is about wrestled into submission (or one of us is anyhow!) and I hope that will free up some sewing time for me.  There's nothing more annoying than wasting good sewing time on computer stuff that isn't even fun! ;)

Erica, I'm so glad you found your way over here.  You're such a fast sewist, that I imagine that both of those patterns will be made up in no time!  I can hardly wait.  On a side note, inspired by your Michael Kors eyelet dress and this totally awesome Diane Von Furstenberg dress, I'm on the search for "big eyed eyelet".  I can find tons of small eyed eyelet, but none with the huge holes in it.  Here is the DVF dress:

Here it is in navy, which I also like:

I bought a skirt with the big-eyed eyelet (RL Polo), but have yet to find that fabric in the stores, either online or local.  Can anyone help?  I may go and post a request for this over in the Fabric section as well, which probably shows my level of desperation to get the fabric!   ;D

Amy and Liana, Mardel and Stephanie (girl in bleue)  I'm glad you liked the simple little tote. That blue/green iridescent doupioni was a perfect match for the colors that the "Big Girl" is wearing.  I have a few more stitchouts of that design to make up into gifts, so you may be seeing iterations of it as the weeks go by.

Liana, I feel your pain with that computer!  I spent weeks repairing our home computer system last Spring after lightning damaged the ethernet boards. modem, and router (translation: I spent minutes repairing the computers after spending weeks of chasing my tail before figuring out all that needed repairing ;D :'( >:(  ).  Now I have the cable modem connections going through humongo surge supressors to hopefully prevent a recurrence.  Anyway, I hope your computer is all better soon.

Stephanie, that Knitty wig is hysterical!

Kathryn, that tote is so cute.  I love the embroidery!  Did you change it in any way after downloading?  I checked out their website and they have such cute designs.  I think I might have to try one (or 2)

Thanks Mardel, Stephanie and Amy for the kind comments on the twinset :)  Stephanie, that "hat" is really cute.  Thanks for the link.
Amy, I am looking forward to seeing your green tweed suit.  I so need a new suit (todays suit is at least 10 years old with a waist under the armpits ::)  Lucky my top covers the waist)

Lots of projects on the go....looks like there will be lots to enjoy over the next few days. ;D

I love what everyone has been doing.. I really enjoy seeing the varies projects and work. I made a leather bag over the weekend this is my first time sewing leather.   I  like the way it turned out I will be making a second one for a gift.
Kathryn I love you bag, I purchased the same embroidery pattern also  have not did anything with it yet. I am not sure I will be able to do it with my embroidery machine I have a very old one with a small hoop.
Here is a picture of the front of the bag.

Here is the inside I used silk dupioni and quilted it to a heavy canvas using a multi-colored thread the same thread I used on the outside. It had one inside pocket.  DH had to shave off some of the handle on onside it would not fit in the medal holder(I guess that is what they are called.).

Okay I am just jumping in here!  So much to see, to share and to be inspired by!

Fran G ~ ah, the slippery slope of machine embroidery! :)  That Kathryn is like the Pied Piper just merrily leading us all over the cliff!  *LOL*  Can't wait to hear all about your adventures in researching and looking at embroidery machines!  Remember, "just enjoy the journey!"  :)

Kathryn ~ ahem!  Just as long as I am on the list (no matter how long it is) I am happy!  Also Fabric Mart has a Grey Big Eyed Eyelet (http://www.fabricmartfabrics.com/controller/catalog.php?cat_id=77).  I don't think gray is what you are looking for but the other colors have unfortunately sold out.  I think they also had it in a brown and a black.  You might want to call their 800 number, maybe there is a piece in another color laying around.

Angie a. aka jeminabean ~ it is good to "see" you here!  I love your blog, btw!  How is your fall SWAP progressing?  Isn't it getting close to the start of school?  Will you have time to finish it before school starts?

Stephanie ~ I am glad that you found something fiberly to do!  Hopefully your furniture will arrive sooner rather than later!  BTW you are going to love all of your new fabric sources.  I had a great time fabric shopping in San Francisco and increased my fabric collection quite a bit!

Amy ~ the green tweed sounds really kewl!  Can't wait to see pictures of the finished suit!  How much longer before school starts?

Erica ~ thanks for sharing pictures of your progress on Vogue 2900.  Isn't it nice to have a place to go where people appreciate, understand and enjoy your sewing progress and admire your finished garments!  At the rate you are sewing, I am sure that we will see pictures of the finished dress soon!

Linda E ~ Your new bag is fantastic!  Just very, very kewl!  How was it sewing on the leather?  Did you do anything special?  Will you make more?

And finally, I have cleaned up my sewing area since I have quite a few things to do this week to get ready for vacation.  We leave early Saturday morning and will be gone all week.  So I have five of my six pieces completed.  The blue silk crepe dress has been cut out and my machines threaded so I will work on it when I return.

You can see pictures of the Burda Five (http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/cnorman_98/album?.dir=/6084re2&.src=ph) here!

All right, this may be a breakthrough!! I was playing in the sandbox and actually came up with a clickable link to a cute pair of pj bottoms that I made for my daughter. I used a cute yoga cat fabric..2 things she loves. The project is no big deal, but the clickable link is huge!! ;D This is all your fault, Carolyn! Gosh, I hope it works here!

First, let me thank Liana, Lisa and DL for their help and patience as I learn how to post a clickable link! I hooted so loudly my husband wanted to know if I was all right! I am still not exactly sure how I managed to finally get it right, just happy I did. I will now have to practice my "clickable link" skills.

I also thank Carolyn who first created a clickable link for me for my newest skirt project showing me that it really does highlight new projects.

I have just skimmed todays posts...I like to read them with my morning coffee... but have to say I am impressed with your Burda 6, Carolyn. I think that your jacket bound with matching fabric from your shell is one of my favorite projects of yours. It really is pretty;  I really love the soft colors.

Linda E..awesome bag! Is that a very supple leather? Relatively easy to sew? Love the lining and the decorative ring/tassel, too. Neat!

I am now exhausted from all of sandbox playing..think I'll go read my book, "The Titled Americans" The story of 3 American sisters and the British aristocratic world into which they married. Really interesting if anyone is looking for a good read.

Carolyn, I peeked on your blog last night just before maintenance and saw some of your Burda FIVE. I really like this ensemble for late summer.

Kathryn, love the tote and the saying.

Fran, walk toward (the machine embroidery) light. If you are looking to upgrade your sewing machine, the combo ME/sew machines are amazing. If you are happy with what you have for sewing, the stand alone ME machines have great stitch quality. Congratulations on the link (By George, she's got it!) and the pj's are darling. Your DD will love them

Erica, nice tease on upcoming attractions-great fabric and great patterns.

Linda E, did you use a leather needle? The bag looks wonderful.

Kathleen, now that I know your mother is coming I will leave the necessary corraling to her  :-X I am really anxious to see the finished garment, though.

Linda, your bag is really cool.  Very designer and upmarket with a pair of jeans.  Thanks for the kind words on my twinset.

Carolyn, just love the Burda 5.  Those buttons really work well with the jacket/binding and the shell.  Great idea!  The outfits look cool and comfortable - are you taking them on your vacation?

Congratulations FranG!  Very nice clickable link ;)  And the PJ's aren't bad either!

Linda,  What a great bag!  Congratulations on a very successful first leather project.

Fran, Great pj pants, and yes, that's our fabric! ;)  Congrats on linking ability!!

Carolyn,  Wonderful group of garments!  I love the colors, all your details, and especially the bead on the back of the top button stitching.  What a great idea!  Wonderful binding, of course.  You look just great!

Erica,  I can't wait to see more photos of your two projects!  You really are fast! :)

Kathryn,  Thanks for the sympathy.  I thought of you and your lightning problems during my trials for the last few days.  I know what you mean about its taking the major portion of the time just trying to figure out what to do.  The doing is the relatively simple part.  Anyway,  I hope I'm done for a while with that kind of thing!  No sewing today, just vicarious thrills from all of you! :)

Vicki, I'm a little slow but I love your twinset. I'll read the review tomorrow hopefully for the details.

LindaE ... great bag!

Kathryn, love your tote and those DVF-ish dresses are very pretty.

Fran, cute yoga pants.

Erica, wow ... 18 pieces!

My blouse needs a time-out in the Magic Wardrobe. I'm done except for buttons/buttonholes but I'm sick of working on it. So I made a skirt tonight instead of making buttonholes, which I'd probably mess up since I'm not feeling the love tonight.  ;D  There's a pic on my blog. Hmmm ... is my blog linked in my signature. I'll have to post this a find out.

I've been away from my computer over a long weekend and just can't believe how productive everyone has been!
All I can say is how much I've enjoyed everything.  Forgive me if I don't comment individually; it doesn't mean I haven't seen it or liked it - just that there are only so many hours in the day!

Later on I hope to start the Marfy shirt that Liana is also trying out. It will be my first Marfy top and a test to see if I like their patterns.

Hi Linda! (waves :D)

Hi Angie, you made it.  I have been playing with the Paint.Net program.  I have shared info with several people here as well.  I want to work on a fall SWAP and the program will help me visualize what I want to do.  Yours and Carolyn's are so impressive.

Linda and Kathryn - loved the bags!  Keep designing.

Kathryn -  The wrap top pattern on the June Burda WOF (front cover #110) is exactly like the Diane VF eyelet dress bodice.  You could add/draft the skirt or just have a two piece outfit that would be TDF!   That was one of my favorite looks for summer too.

I wanted to share the Daily Candy web site (www.dailycandy.com) - I get their daily e-mails about all sorts of wonderful things (nobody pays to advertise).  Today's e-mail was about an LA designer with some cute dresses -  Heidimerrick.com   Here's what the Dailey Candy e-mail said about the dresses, "An effortlessly adorable way to start the day, Merrick’s premiere dresses are handcrafted mainly in her L.A. studio (where she also does by-appointment fittings for the lucky locals). The summer collection of canvas and twill strapless numbers delights in crisp white, delicate plaid, toile, and camouflage prints with accents like unexpected vintage belts.

Come fall, the line will comprise exaggerated ’60s-inspired roll collars, corseted waists, and slinky below-the-knee hemlines cut from crepe wool in dreamy colors like cloud and classic prints like plaid.  Lined in delicate brown, blue, and orange, each frock is deliciously easy to slip into."

When you look at the prices you'll be glad you sew!

Dierdre, this made me laugh. Seriously though, I was just telling a friend of mine who's interested in spinning that using a drop The class was fun, as there were only two students and the instructor is very knowledgable.

Nora---I enjoyed reading about your spinning class.  Tell me, are you thinking of raising sheep?  I thought of this one time as I so enjoyed the feeling of fleece.  But then my DH's comment was ----are you nuts---he grew up in the country and they had sheep, so he knew what he was talking about.  I think you will enjoy the wheel---once you get on to it, it's very relaxing.  Thing is, you start off spinning this great textured, chunky stuff, and when you get to know 'what you are doing' and start to spin fine, which is the usual goal, it's hard to spin the interesting clunky stuff.

Keep us posted on this,

Deirdre

Erica, I am eagerly following the progress of your Vogue 2900 and love the fabric you found for the Roland Mouret knockoff.

Liana, I am glad this version of your Marfy blouse is going well.  I am sure the general computer frustration does not help with clear thought at sewing time either in terms of your previous drafts.  I have certainly done the same kind of thing.  I seem to always start out making things too big, even though I know better.  I do hope the computer problems are getting better, having gone through computer failures in the spring of 2005 and then electrical failures this past spring; these things take up a major amount of time and effort.  Of course Kathryn is right the fix is easy, its just all the time figuring out what is needed that drives us crazy.

Kathryn, love the DVF dress you posted, but unfortunately can't help with the big-eye eyelet.  I would love to find some too.  I find that very frustrating when I see fabric in the form of clothes in the stores but I can't find the rare materials.  I have seen a few pieces of broderie Anglaise with rather large eyelets and although it is not the same, you might be able to find a piece that works.

LindaE, the bag is really cute.  What a great first leather project!

Carolyn, the Burda 5 are fabulous and you look great in them.  I really like the binding and the way the buttons work so well witht the binding and shell.  Inspired ideas there!  Everything looks very stylish and very cool and comfortable as well, all very important considerations.

FranG the PJ pants are wonderful and congratulations on gettting the link to work!

Debbie the skirt is really lovely.  Isn't it wonderful to just whip something out.  I wish I had a TNT pattern at the moment, but they are all too big or too small... not that I'm complaining.  The blouse will be wonderful after a well deserved break.

I am still plodding through the "slowest skirt construction project" but truthfully at this point I have only been putting in time in bits and pieces.  I think I can attach the lining and the waist band today then I'm done.  I looked at it last night about 11 and although I could have don it then, I just didn't have the patience so I curled up to knit instead, knowing I would probably do something ugly if I went ahead with the sewing plans.

In the meantime you all are providing tons of vicarious sewing thrills.

Stephanie, I'm glad your move went well and you are out in such a  beautiful spot of the USA.  But I'm also glad that you are a member of Red Sox Nation by the sound of it!

Auntie J, Go Sox! I grew up in Rhode Island, and while I've only been to Fenway once, I saw many Paw Sox games as a kid. Wherever I am if I have my Sox hat on, I find other fans.

Erica, I started reading your blog lately and I'm in awe. Your work is beautiful. Good luck with the Vogue DKNY dress. I love your fabric choice. Also, I've been eyeing that Simplicity 4403 pattern and a couple others similar to it. I see many coats in my mind, but have to stop and ask myself, How many am I really going to need?

Terri K., I get Daily Candy, too. I love looking at the fashion, and like you, I'm glad I can sew instead of having to pay some of those prices for designer dress. Did you go to the Heidi Merrick website? I had trouble opening the Collection page and couldn't get a good look at all her dresses.

Carolyn, I love the print you chose for your Burda 5. How clever to use it as the seam binding, too.

I hope everyone's sewing day goes well today!

Stephanie

Everyone is so busy with such wonderful projects.  Linda, that leather bag is wonderful.  I have never tried sewing leather.  Did you have any special challenges with it?  How did your machine handle the bulk?  Such a beautiful handbag.

EricaB, that Vogue dress is so interesting.  I can't wait to see your finished product.  I love that pattern.

Carolyn, thanks for the encouragement to keep plodding away at this suit.  School starts in just two weeks for me.  I have to go back a week before the students since I am teaching.  There is a week long training for new teachers.  I am hoping to at least get this suit done and another started before the return.

Yesterday was a lost sewing day.  The new house construction project meant a day meeting with plumbers and running house plans all over town.  I managed only to make the sleeves and attach the collar to the jacket.  Today I should get more done.  I am hoping to finish the jacket today.

I'm glad I can check in with you eagle-eyed, snoop-shopping fashionistas.  Otherwise, I wouldn't know when a Burda WOF is designer-inspired, like this dress, Kathryn.  I think I want it in a work-appropriate dress fabric with the collar from the wrap blouse in the May issue instead of the neckline ruffle.

It's been so long since I have had a chance to post.  I have enjoyed all the projects so much and can never get caught up telling everyone how much I enjoy the wonderful things you have done.

I do need to say a special thanks to Ann for telling me about thae stabilizer under her marvelous sleeve embroidery.  Ann has been so wonderful to answer all my questions on another site.  I feel when I hit my sewing room I have her sitting there as a guardian angel along with Kathryn and her help over the past years.  It is a nice warm fuzzy feeling.

Kathryn I love your tote bag and add a me too to the gift list.  That DVF dress top is the Burda June 2006 WOF top on the cover.  I did it in a knit and was very happy with the result.  I think it should work for you.

Linda, that's a great leather bag.  I'd love to hear more of the step by step process.  I am intrigued and have several suede skirts that could easily become bags.  So hopefully you can "tell all", on this interesting project.

Aside from the Burda top and several pants, I did the skirt Liana posted.  I love it.  It is very flattering and was fun to do.  I feel sort of "out of it", but have no way to post photos of projects.

Carolyn and other great fabric finders, I am desparate like Kathryn to find a fabric.  Burda WOF August 2006 has a great jacket I want to do it is Jacket 108A, I think what I have heard called a donegal tweed with leather trim.  That whole issue came last night and I found several very neat things I want to do.  They had some really nice styles this time.  I am still in Sandbox 101 trying to figure how to get links clickable here, but check out www.burdamode.com for some neat ideas for Fall.  The Brit collecton is so fun.

Susan

Stephanie, I didn't have any trouble browsing the Heidi Merrick website earlier this morning.    I got my Burda WOF yesterday.  They are so fashion forward in terms of interpreting the trends, and - important to me, making them wearable!   I also like to see the garments on real people instead of fashion illustrations showing the design on a stickpin model.

Re the Michael Kors and DVF eyelet looks, you have inspired me as to what to make from a couple of pieces of black eyelet I have.  One is only a remnant, washed and drapey enough for - yes, another Tango skirt; and the other piece is eyelet with motifs embroidered on each selvedge side that would be very nice for the June WOF wrap top.    Sounds like a plan!

Erica B... I spent much of my morning coffee time reading your blog. It's just great fun!  You and your daughters are very fortunate..you because you have appreciative daughters to sew for and them because they can put in their orders for exactly what they want.

I love the knitted fingerless gloves that were on Knitty.com, I think. You provided sevberal really interesting links..my morning coffee may become 2! My fingerless gloves (http://us.a2.yahoofs.com/users/43beedc0zb314b0dd/b04b/__sr_/5365re2.jpg?phI44zEBe8.VOSA6) are more decorative than useful/practical, so I may try those from Knitty. Thanks!

I love that vogue dress pattern..even bought it. But I have not yet found fabric that I like for it. Was going to use black pique, but thought better of it..and the fabric sold out! So..I am looking forward to seeing yours.

First I like to say that I have been a long time reader of this thread.  A couple three year at least.  I would like to thank all of the very generous ladies who have shared  so much of their time, talent, teaching, and great taste.  I have to say many of you are very much my heros.   Reading this thread has taught me so much about the fine art of sewing and has improved my skills tremendously. I sincerley thank you all!!!   You inspire me daily.

So I am going to come out of lurkdom and do a little sharing myself.   This dress was made for dd for a formal evening wedding.  Here is the review (http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/readreview.pl?readreview=1&reviewnum=15480)

For anyone on the fence about a Embroidery machine.  I say go for it.  I am on my second one.  Although I don't use it as much as I think I should.  I sure do have fun incorporating it into my dress making.

Susan, I'm so glad to help;  at one time or another we all need to ask questions - I must have asked a million over the years! - now the time has come when I can provide some of the answers, it's a great feeling.

I've been spending time today on the Marfy freebie blouse and so far I'm pleased with the result - I really had no idea what to expect but it is coming along nicely.

So August WOF is out - can't wait to get mine, the previews had me drooling.

Whew, it's hard to keep up with everything going on here---

LindaE---that purse is gorgeous---where did you get the handle and the clasp?  Speaking of purses the new Burda WOF arrived today, and they have a really nice crocheted bagin this issue-scroll down for picture; I don't know how to do the pretty link thing yet.

Carolyn - your five pieces are looking great---it pays to take the time to do the finishing details that you have done---the garments looks so professional and they suit you well.

EricaB--lovely dress patterns you have chosen and the bodice of the Vogue dress is looking beautiful.  Where did you get your fabrics, if I may ask?  The glen plaid one looks like Fabric Mart.  Speaking of glen plaid they show a lot of this in the current WOF.  So it seems it is still very popular.  I was trying to get on your blog site today, but couldn't so will have to try later.

Debbie-your skirt is really pretty.  I love the colours and it goes well with your WIP blouse.

FranG-those really are the cat's pyjamas ;D  You did such a great job with the bias---what a nice touch.  Fran, don't hesitate to get yourself an embroidery machine.  I have the 300E as well and I love it.  If I can fit another machine into my space, I am sure anyone else can :o

Tina-your daughter's dress is such a pretty colour and the embroidery detail is so nice.  She looks lovely.  Is it hard to do one of these neckline designs.  I have several in my files, but am a bit hesitant to try them.  Any tips?

Kathryn-those dresses just so look like you---can't wait until you get your version done withe white big-eye eyellet fabric.

I hope I haven't missed anyone and if I did give me a slap up the side of the head ;)

Thanks for the nice comments on my bag.  I used my 10 year old kenmore to sew the bag on.  I used a leather needle and teflon foot on the machine.  I quilt a thin batting to the leather using the multi colored rayon thread in a stppling matter very open for the leather.  I quilt a canvas to the lining which is silk dupioni.  The handles came from Hobby lobby and they were fairly inexpensive.  the pattern is kimura bag I don't have a link to it..  The pattern is designed to be reversiable I didn't make mine that way.  I put a small magntic snap on it had to shop for one at joann's and hancock's Sunday the only one I had were too large I felt.  My DH was trying to help me and the only small one I had broke Saturday evening(.Bless his heart was trying to help).

I don't comment enough on others projects  :) :) :)
I really enjoy looking at all of your work keep it up.

Well must be off as I am fabric shopping with about 6 other Patternreview ladies who live in Melbourne.  We are going to a wholesaler.  Wish me luck  >:D

Appleannie, your pieces look great! I especially like the jacket.

I just got an email from Linda at EmmaOneSock. My order shipped today. Yay! But she didn't have as much of the fabric (http://emmaonesock.com/fabrics/cottonprints11989.asp) that I wanted, and I told her to just send whatever she has. I'm getting 3 yards instead of 5. So, I can't do the long coat I had in mind, but I have other jacket patterns I can use with it. I would have taken less than a yard and squeezed a skirt, hat, and/or purse out of it if I had to.

Anne, I love your three new garments!!!! I'm tempted to copy them, lock, stock and barrel. It's a stoke of brilliance to use the same fabric for piping on all three garments. Will you wear them together?

I'm always inspired by your choice of patterns. You take some that I think are ho-hum on first glance, and make them sing. For example, I've become a big fan of the Burda "flippy skirt" because of you. Now I may have to add that Burda jacket to my to-make list.

Thanks for sharing.

Back  home and catching up........

Debbie, thanks for the compliment on the twinset.  Your skirt is nice, especially with the "almost" finished shirt.  It looks pretty special with the fringing.  What a pain with the darts!

Tina, your dd's dress is lovely.  Nice trim ;)  The neckline looked like a necklace from a distance.  Beautiful embroidery!!

Stephanie, I love that vintage floral corduroy you bought.  Will make a great jacket/coat.

Erica, I too have been reading your blog and am amazed at your crotcheting (and knitting) - and you have only been doing that for a year????

I am feeling a lot like Carolyn with my latest fabric purchasing.  We went to MAD (a wholesaler) and also to a clearance house for an Australian designer's fabrics.  Well I bought some stuff there as well.  today's fabrics (http://au.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/vicki_hks/album?.dir=/d5b8scd&urlhint=actn,ren%3as,1%3af,0)

Anne,

Beautiful dresses and jacket.  Your coordination of colors/fabrics is really sharp and your signature piping just makes your fabrics "pop"! Where did you find the time??

OK..you can skip the sandbox ..your clickable posting was perfect..first shot! ;D

Anne beautiful trio of garments.  The shared piping makes the whole collection really special and really does make everything just pop.  A great detail, subtle, and yet it is what makes everything so special.  Wow.  I love the necklace too.  Was that an inspiration for the colors of the garments?

First thank you very much Marianne, Vicki, Liana, AnnR., Mardel, Stephanie, Deidre and LindaE. for your kind compliments on my Burda Five.  I have several pieces of it stacked and waiting to be packed in my suitcase for vacation.

Deidre ~ glen plaids are one of those classic staple fabrics that are always around but sometimes in fashion they are more in than at other times.  I have two that I am incorporating in my Fall SWAP.  As for the crocheted purse, I read the directions and it seems simple to crochet but did you notice the stress points when the shell crochet stitching is added to the bottom of the purse!  :o  I can just see all of my stuff bursting out in the middle of the street in NYC!!!!  That transition made me a little nervous!

Fran G ~ love the cat pjs you made for your daughter!  Very cute fabric!

Tina ~ the embroidery around the neck of your daughter's dress is very pretty.  Was it hard to do?  Your daughter looks so nice in the dress and matching sweater jacket!

Ann ~ I opened your Yahoo photo album and just smiled at the the title!  It is the perfect title for the perfect piping that is on your garments.  I love how you used the piping to tie all of the garments together.  They are simply stunning.

Vicki ~ nice haul!  I think there was a compliment in there about my fabric buying!  :)  And I hope that you really enjoyed your day with other PR members and had lots of good conversations, lots of fun and of course, good additions to your fabric collection!!!!

Debbie ~ you really preservered and made the Burda blouse work for you!  And yes, I definitely know the joy of TNT patterns ~ which I am sure gave you great pleasure when you were able to assemble such a complimentary skirt to the blouse!  Can't wait to see you in the finished garments!  You have definitely earned a gold star for working through your issues and pushing through to the finish line!

Well my goodness, I barely *blink* and two pages fill up on this thread!  It must be the perfect time of the year for sewing!

Vicki, I'm glad you like the tote.  I embroidered it "as is", that is, I didn't change a thing when I downloaded it from the site.  I used all of their Madeira thread recommendations for the colors.  I think it's cute that the kooky little lady even has blue eyeshadow on!  That was probably only 3 stitches per eye, but it adds such a cute little detail.  Your stash is growing by leaps and bounds, but it sounds like you're having great fun building it.  I love the colors and the trims, too.  A very pretty collection, indeed.

Angiea, my project album has grown like Topsy, so I have started a new one.  Nothing in it as yet, but the other one got up to 100 albums with over 1500 photos in it.  Waay too big!  I'm happy that you've had some fun looking through my projects.

Linda E, thanks for the compliments on my tote bag.  I just love your purse with the free motion quilting and the pretty closure.  The inside is really beautiful, too.  It's great that your DH could help get that handle assembled. I love that multicolor thread that you used. It's reallly perfect because it kicks the design up a notch, but very subtly. You've got a really pretty designer bag there, Linda.  Enjoy carrying it!

Carolyn, thank you for the link to the grey big-eyed eyelet.  When I clicked on it, there was the chocolate piece available on the same page, so I quickly placed an order for it.  The chocolate eyelet should be UPSing it's way to me even as we speak.  Your Burda 5 looks great! I love the photos of you modeling the garments.  All of the colors pulled together just as you envisioned them.  It's really a very, very pretty collection.  And how wonderful that your stash find helped you save some $$ for your upcoming vacation.  That's why we love our stashes!  I don't know which piece of your Five I like the best, but if pushed, I'd have to say I like the jacket, because you used the trim to pull all of the components together.  That was a real subtle touch, and a stroke of genius.  That whole collection is so pleasing to the eye, I'm going to have to go back and ogle it again.

FranG, congratulations on appeasing the computer demons long enough to learn how to make a clickable link!  Now you'll be able to do it in your sleep.  Those little pj bottoms are adorable.  Now I have to buy that pattern, since your DD and mine have such similar tastes (and doting mothers, I might add!  ;) )

Marianne, thanks for the compliment on my tote.  As we noted over on SW, it's not a design that can be given to just anyone.  Actually, the people who need that saying the most are the ones I can't give it to!  ;D  Thank you, too, for the link to eQuilter's big-eyed eyelet.  It too is UPSing its way to me.  I'll be so phat in big eyed eyelet!

Erica, thanks for the kudos on my tote.  I'm still anticipating your next creation!

Debbie, that blouse is going to look great when you get it fitted to your satisfaction.  I love the way you analyze the fit and use PMB, combined with the Burda to make just the perfect garment.  Taking a time out, especially when "not feeling the love" is so wise!  Many a time I had wished I had done that with some projects!  Thanks for the compliment on my tote as well.

Terri K, I have been studying that wrap dress in the August Burda WOF, and, at your recommendation, I'll study the top from the June WOF, too.  I'll have to work fast if I'm going to get that dress made in time to wear this summer.  Thank you for the link to the Daily Candy site.  What fun!  You always find the most interesting sites, Terri!  BTW, I just love that LH sheath on you.  Those little mini-cap sleeves are such an interesting touch, and very figure flattering, drawing the eye up and out as they do.  Great choice!

So, Mardel, how goes the skirt?  Slowly but surely?  I saw a piece of that pleated aqua colored fabric at JoAnn Fabrics the other day, and thought immediately of that cute little quickie skirt that you made from it.

Redhead, thanks too for the August Burda WOF suggestion for the wrap dress.  I like the design of that one you posted because the wrap is a bit higher, and may be more modest, and marrying it with the May WOF neckline is a good idea.  As I said on another topic, I never met a wrap top that could be trusted  ;) ;D, so I'm looking for the most trustworthy one before embarking on the project!

Susan, how nice to hear from you, and thank you for the compliments, both on my help over the years, and for my tote.  It's always nice to be of help, especially since I receive so much help myself from SG and SW members.  It's good to hear that you had such success with that June WOF top.  I've already added it to my list, but knowing that your top is so wearable is great news indeed.

Tina, (Fromthewest), welcome!  It's nice to read your post here, and even nicer to be able to feast my eyes on your DD's dress this morning!  Wow, what gorgeous embroidery, and what a beautiful dress.  Of course the "model" is perfect for the dress--she is so pretty!  You did such a wonderful job. Love the color, love the style, love the embroidery.  How thrilled your DD must have been to wear it. as pretty as she looks in it.

Deirdre, that crochet bag is so cute!  How did I miss it in the new WOF?  I must look again.  I only did a quick scan of it and got hung up on the wrap dress and the 'reader's design".

Anne, what a delightful trio of garments to look at this morning! You reign supreme as the Queen of Piping.  I love the colors and love the styles you chose as well.  That Matrix dress doesn't look like it needs a side zip, but adding it must make it easier to pull on.  How beautifully you matched the patterns on the floral dress!  A real treat for the eye.  The cross-dyed linen is the perfect tie-in for those prints, grounding them and giving the eye a place to rest.  It's really a spectacular combination, and your work, as usual is impeccable.  Enjoy wearing your pretty new things!

Anne, your trio are beautiful.  The printed piping that ties them all together works so well. Great idea because piping is usually a plain contrast - isn't it? - you've got my imagination working hard.

My new WOF came this morning but I'm saving it for bedtime reading - it sounds as though I'm going to have plenty to look at. The idea of cool weather sewing has become much more appealing as our heat wave is over  - currently, 7pm, it's 58 F with driving drizzle! The only consistent thing with our British weather is its inconsistency...

I'm off to search for a warm sweater.

Anne your garments are beautiful and so cool and comfortable looking.  It is amazing how something as simple as piping, well, not necessarily easy to make, but still just that little touch can make such an impact.

Ann R.  There are a few of us here in the states that would be thrilled to be needing a heavy sweater.  I was in the Highlands of Scotland in Oct. last year and we all got so accustomed to the weather that we were uncomfortable when we got home to much warmer temps.

Hope you found a way to enjoy your day regardless of the rain.

OK, I finally got the skirt finished, not that it was difficult.  I just took my sweet time.  Although once upon a time I always wanted to churn things out faster, faster, it seems that I have slowed down considerably.  I wonder if there is some genetic predispostion to puttering and tinkering, even with sewing projects.

Mardel, that skirt turned out so cute!  Please give more detail about the fabric and the trim fabrics that you used, everything matching so perfectly.  It should make you happy, each time you slip that skirt on, that the lining matches so perfectly.  It's those little joys that makes the ability to sew such great fun!

I really like the maroon color on you--it's richness is wonderful.  Did you make the coordinating sweater?

Thank you all for the wonderful compliments on my trio with shared piping. Vicki, I promise to post more pics wearing the matrix dress.  It is fitted at the waist which of course did not translate in my photos and which made it impossible to get into without a zipper. And, the belt refused to stay on the dress without me in it.Stephanie, LindaE, Pam---I have yet to wear the jacket with either dress as it is too hot here to even consider wearing a jacket. AAF overlooks a river and often times ac can be turned off and windows opened so summertime finds me in dresses for work. So glad you love the flippy skirt, still a favorite of mine. LindaL, for a woman who thinks her favorite color is pink, I certainly have embraced these color tones. TerriK, McCall's 8781 is an old NY,NY pattern ( will be happy to send you an image/loan you the pattern) that my students have been making lately. The pants pattern is Burda 8209 with a back zip and waistband. Ressy, FranG, Carolyn, Kathryn, AnnRowley, Kathy in NE Ohio, thank you for your kind words.  Mardel, the necklace was my second beading project and Kim my teacher told me I couldn't buy any more blues and greens!!! It was made to go with another dress that I hope to finish soon.

Cute skirt with great detail Mardel.  Don't think for one minute that matching lining is unimportant.  It's those little details that keep us all smiling.

I'm heading in home in hopes of finishing a batik dress to wear tomorrow while watching Project Runway.

Thanks again...

Your finished skirt repays your attention to detail Mardel. Lovely combination of fabrics.

I have to confess that I wouldn't have bound the seams on a lined skirt. I'm afraid to say that often I leave them raw edged; perhaps with your cotton I might have introduced them to my serger... Idle or what?  But I, like you, do my fair share of "puttering and tinkering", to me it's just part of the creative process.

Carolyn, yes glen plaid, houndstooth, and herringbone tweed to name a few are always classics.  Every time I look through my clippings from fashion magazines spanning 35+ years :o, all are represented over and over and always look great.

I think on the crocheted purse, that the portion you mention could be strengthed either by lining or adding a strip of leather to that area.

What a pretty fabric, Mardel! Your knitted shell..another Mardel project??..matches so beautifully. I love the Kaffe Fasset bands; a great blending of fabrics. This is where I would have gone astray. I probably never would have thought to use the KF fabric with your maroon print. But it provides the perfect touch. I have just started reading The Artist's Way  (http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/1585421464.01._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-dp-500-arrow,TopRight,45,-64_AA240_SH20_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg) hoping to develop my locked up creativity. Stay tuned ;D

Like you, I am a bit of a "tinker-er"  (is that a word?)..spending too much time puttering around and thinking without doing.I don't really mind that it seems to take me forever to finish projects and I normally do not put any pressure on myself to finish. Sewing is an area that I choose to do. I will not pressure myself. We all have many obligations..things we have to do. My sewing is not one of those.  Of course when I wonder why I am not as productive as many on this board, I have just answered my question! So today, I will stop and pick up some simple buttons that will finish a simple linen blouse that is finished except for those buttons!

Nice job, Mardel!

I just edited this to make the book title a clickable link!! I am like a child who has just learned to count to 100 by 2's! Wanna hear? Wanna hear?

Did anyone notice on the Project Runway previews last night that next week Diane Von Furstenberg looks as though she may be wearing The Bg Eyed Eyelet Dress???  I wish the clip had not run past so fast!  Now not only do I have to wonder who gets auf'd next week, I have to wonder about whether I get to see the dress on the designer herself  :D.

Mardel ~ loved the skirt and all of the touches that you added to make it extra special!  And isn't that why we sew to have those extra things that RTW manufacturers would not put in because they would increase the cost?!  It was definitely worth the time you took "tinkering" with it in your sewing room!

Quoting from Mardel,  "OK, I finally got the skirt finished, not that it was difficult.  I just took my sweet time.  Although once upon a time I always wanted to churn things out faster, faster, it seems that I have slowed down considerably.  I wonder if there is some genetic predispostion to puttering and tinkering, even with sewing projects."

Mardel, your skirt is really special, and so is your thought.  Generic , I don't know, but the talent on this board has created a mega change in my sewing room.  I love the place even more and my sewing experience is much more complete.  I developed a Fall sewing plan early summer and have been happily working towards my goal with the tinkering and touches Mardel is describing.  I find taking your time really is faster and the results are great.  I did a pant/trouser pattern with Ann's help, and now have four finished and one more almost done.  All are lined and three have fly fronts, two no fly as I prefer no fly if they are part of a suit.  Two jackets are done, with two more to do.  Then on to skirts, although I did do the plaid Liana posted and I love it!

Reading the SWAP concept and just enjoying the beautiful work you see here, really has been gratefully applied to my sewing and wardrobe.

Susan

Thank you all for the wonderful comments on my skirt!  I am wearing it today, with the same sweater  in the photo, and love it.

Yes I did knit the sweater, it is a project from a few years ago.  It is knitted out of Victoria by Anny Blatt.  The pattern was one put out by a yarn store in the LA area, L'Atelier, in Redondo Beach.  This color was called Raisin.  It is one of my favorite colors and I pretty much buy anything I see in those shades since I think they are among my very best colors.

And that is how I ended up with the fabric for the skirt, in answer to Kathryn's question.  The skirt fabric is a cotton from Joann Fabrics.  It was on display with their "Destination India" collection earlier this summer.  I actually went in the store for a pattern and for some felt for my little soft kitty project and ended up walking out with fabric as well.  I'm going to post the photo of the skirt with the stripe bands so you know what I am talking about.

I had purchased a set of fat quarters of Kaffe Fassett's Haze stripe collection at one point when I was trying to decide on which one to purchase for a few casual striped shirt ideas.  I figured I needed to see the actual fabric better, and it is a drive for me to find any store that carries these fabrics around me.  Admittedly I also figured I would eventually use them because I find striped fabrics endlessly useful.  I actually had a little trouble matching the fabrics I received to the website, because the colors don't seem to match on my monitor all that well, and found I had to store them in order in order to know what was what.

The darker purple stripe is purple dark haze stripe (http://www.gloriouscolor.com/merchant/store.htm) and the lighter striped fabric is grape medium haze stripe (http://www.gloriouscolor.com/merchant/store.htm).

When I was trying to find an alternative to my first idea for the hem band, I was not so creative,  I looked at ribbons I had and a few other cotton fabrics and there were a few things that were nice but nothing was quite right.  It took me a few trips to the cotton drawer before I thought I might be able to use one or more of the Kaffe Fassett stripes.  This wasn't because the striped fabric wasn't apparent, but more because I just hadn't gotten my mind around it yet.

I have to admit I am very happy with the reorganization of the cottons because it is so much easier to find ideas and inspirations.

And Ann, I wouldn't usually bind the seam edges of a cotton skirt either -- I really don't know what got into me there.  Usually I would just serge them and that solution would have been much faster.  I think I it was the lining that did it to me.  The skirt is pretty full and I just made a simple a-line lining that is not nearly as full as the skirt and hangs free.  Usually, when I make a narrower skirt, the liing and the skirt are close to the same size and I attach my linings at the hem, even though I was always taught not to do that.  I have never had a problem with that technique, as long as one is careful about lining everything up properly, and because I squirm around so much, this way my linings never peek down below my skirt hem, which happens on every RTW skirt I have ever owned.  I guess I thought if anyone ever looked up my skirt, I wanted the edge to be pretty?  Duh! As if I was going to let anyone look up my skirt!

Yes, FranG, I enjoy tinkering and no longer pressure myself anymore.  I will never be a top producer in terms of my sewn garments and that's ok.  When I start feeling pressured to sew I balk like a mule so it is better to just relax and tinker.  Congratulations on the clickable links!

Yes Kathryn, I saw that bit of Big Eyed Eyelet Dress!

I'm glad Susan that you are working away on some things you love.  I certainly have to admit that I am very happy with the results of my meandering projects.

Ann, What a beautiful trio!  You have such a great eye for detail and for color.  You will be the envy of all who see you and them. :)

I finally resubscribed to WOF (it's been years!) and got the August issue several days ago.  I too, love that crocheted bag!  Deirdre, I will note your comments on the join, and how to strengthen it.  I was thinking lining, but leather would be even better, or something anyway.  There are a couple other things that are catching my eye, but I'm thinking of starting with the yoked skirt, 114.  It's a style I've been thinking of, and there it is, ready to go. :)

Mardel, Your skirt is so darling!  Great hem touches, and I like your matching waistband and of course the knitted top is perfect, too!

Kathryn,  Chocolate eyelet sounds yummy, to say the least! ;)  I also was eyeing that WOF wrap dress.

Tina,  What a darling daughter you have, and how much fun to sew for her!  She looks thrilled with her dress, and I can believe you're both having a ball! :)

Ann,  I can't wait to see what your Marfy 1101 looks like!  I know it will be perfect.  I've finally finished my chiffon version, and oh the humanity!  Anyway, it's done except for buttons.  I never seem to have the perfect button anymore, so I will go this afternoon (I hope) and get some.  I know what I want, which is usually fatal, so I may have to just shop with an open mind. ;)  I'm taking my Mom to the fair this afternoon, so I hope to work in a little button shopping too.  I got my county fair results yesterday.  I got 1st and Best of Lot on the Cable/Bobble Sweater; 1st on my Vogue jacket with the embellished collar, and 2nd on the shirt.  So, not bad. :)

Go out and have a celebratory corn dog at the fair!  ;D  You deserve it!

Mardel, I love the  skirt, I would love to get my hands on some of that fabric!!  All the details are so cool too!  ANd best of all it is really sharp on you with that great shell..way to go!

Liana, congrats on your winnings at the fair.  Is that bobbles pullover from a Kristin Nichols pattern?  I have been looking at one of her patterns and it reminded me of your sweater.

When I see all of your beautiful garments, the thing that comes to mind is so many times I am trying to make something so quickly that I do not add any details, and those detail are what make the garment that much more special.  So my thanks for all the inspiration and the permission to slow down and ahve more fun sewing!

Congratulations Liana on all your well deserved awards. Your work is impecable and I can't imagine that you have lots of competion.  I so enjoyed viewing all the beautiful shirts you've made for Pearle.  What type of interfacing do you use?

Thank you and AliceB for the kind words on my trio.  Part of the excitement of sewing, for me, is to have a piece of fabric leap out of the stash closet and present itself as an embellishment/compliment to another fabric.  It happens a lot, perhaps due to all the various closets containing sstash!!!

Mardel it was fun to view your photos of your skirt and how it evolved.  Lots of interesting stash in your closet too!!!

Carolyn, I envy you with all those new Fall Fashion Magazines.  I had hoped to travel to NYC on Tues but the high temps kept me away. Too hot to be buying wool.  Have you seen the tailoring exhibit at FIT?

Speaking of tailoring, Is anyone watching The House of Boateng?  An interesting reality show about a high-end London menswear designer who is trying to break into the American market. Love his suits.

Thank you Deirdre, AliceB, Mardel, Carolyn, Kathryn, FranG, Betsy, andib & Ann on all your very kind congratulations!

Ann, I had always used Pellon's ShirTailor until this shirt.  For this one I used Pro Woven Fusible from Sew Exciting. (http://www.sewexciting.blogspot.com/)  The owner is a custom shirtmaker, and a dear friend.  She has lots of great interfacings, all professional quality, and a few other great notions.  NAYY, but great products.  This particular interfacing is supposed to be what Brooks Bros. uses in their shirts.  It's very nice and stiff, and I use it on both the upper and lower collars, inner and outer stands, and outer cuffs.   Where is The House of Boateng?  I haven't even seen such a show advertised.  It sounds really intriguing!  Tell more, please!

andib, The sweater pattern is #25 from Vogue Knitting's Winter 01/02 issue.

FranG, I don't remember how many bobbles exactly, but I'm pretty sure it was over 1000! :o  :)  I can still just about make bobbles in my sleep. ;)

I got buttons this evening, so you all know where I'll be.

Liana,  Thank you for the interfacing information.  I will check it out as there is always a need for so many types/weights of various interfacings.

I googled House Of Boateng and here is an entry that may peek your interest.

House of Boateng
Episode 4
2006 - 27 mins - Color

This Brit has designs on America.

Savile Row tailor and British design sensation Ozwald Boateng revolutionized the perception of menswear in Europe with his unique blend of traditional elegance and cutting-edge modernity. Now he's set his sights across the Atlantic.

HOUSE OF BOATENG follows the fashion legend in an eight-episode documentary series as he launches his Bespoke Couture line in America. Go behind the scenes for the high-stakes launch of a high-end fashion brand that's anything but a sure thing.

Following the successful presentation of his autumn apparel show for Givenchy, Ozwald Boateng and a handful of associates travel to New York. In America's fashion capital, they size up potential investors, interview possible public relations agencies, meet with corporate headhunters and look at more retail real estate. But back in London, preparations for Ozwald's new collection at a show in Milan are running into trouble, causing some to wonder if it may be too soon for Ozwald to dream of overseeing a global business empire.

Congratulations Liana! We all knew you would win ;D

I will have to catch up on everyone's creations sometime this weekend. The high heat this week, combined with the fact that I am supposed to be carding wool for my class on Saturday, have kept me from the computer. The room with my computer is the hottest in the house, which is really saying something, and I'm not really willing to turn on the AC in that room just to spend an hour in front of the computer. I have discovered, however, that a drum carder will be a necessity if I choose to continue on with spinning. Not only is carding boring, it aggravates an old shoulder injury that doesn't usually bother me. Isn't it amazing how the body never really forgets all the punishment we've imposed on it? ::)

This is showing on the Oxygen channel in my area!

Anne,

Is House of Boateng  on a pay per view channel? I searched on the Oxygen network and came up with showings on almost every day, various times. When I asked the DVR system to record, I was switched to the Sundance channel #247 here in RI using the Cox cable system. Apparently the Sundance channel is a feature of Showtime.

House of Boateng sounds good.  I wonder if I can get it.  Liana, good to hear your thoughts on the Pro Woven Fusible.  I have used it a couple of times and really liked it but I am not an expert shirt maker.  I hope to make some shirts for myself this fall though so I planned on trying it again and am glad to hear you liked it.

FranG,

I know less about our TV system than I do about linking photos to this site!!!  We have Comcast and watch the House of Boateng on The Independent Film Channel.  Hope you can find it on Cox as I find it very interesting and love his flair for fashion.

Anne, your trio is amazing.  Very nice pieces.

Mardel, your skirt and sweater are both lovely.  I looked first at the skirt, then went back after I read here that you had knitted the sweater also.  Both pieces are very nice, and look great together.

Liana, congratualtions on your fair wins!  I knew you would be a winner with your beautiful entries.

I took a day off from sewing yesterday to have lunch and a fabric shopping day with a friend of mine.  This is an old friend from college who has lived in Fargo for a few years, so it is purely concidence that I ended up living here too, but very nice to have her close enough to see all that time again.  We were very close in college and have stayed in close contact for all the years we have lived in different states.  She sews too, and we shared many projects in college.  Yesterday we spent a couple hours at the Mill End store.  I finally found a chocolate brown fabric to make a skirt for one of the "orphan" jackets I purchased RTW.  I also made a find that has me very excited.  They had a new shipment of Ralph Lauren wools that were gorgeous.  I bought 4 1/2  yards of a beautiful houndstooth in shades of blue and brown.  It is really divine wool.  I want to make a coat from it.  I bought Simplicity 4403:

I want to make the view shown in pink to the far right.  Now, I'll appeal to the talents of this very skilled group with questions.  Since I do live in Fargo now, I am thinking of ways to make the coat warm.  I am planning to wear it as a dress coat when I travel with the speech team, so it will be the dead of winter, which in this region can be pretty brutal.  I would very much appreciate your suggestions for making this coat not just pretty, but warm and wearable in the cold.  Should I quilt the lining?  With what?  An interlining?  Of what?  Help!  ???

As for my green suit, I finished the jacket this morning and love it.  I will work on the skirt today and post pictures as soon as I finish.

Nora & Amy, Thank you!

Amy, I think Deirdre could really give you some help here, but I know there's a Kasha (or something similar) coat lining that's satin on one side and very warm whatever on the other that you can use as interlining for real warmth.  It seems to be more available in Canada, but I can't imagine they've never heard of it in Fargo! ;)  It used to be available everywhere.  You will definitely want an interlining as well as your regular lining and underlining.  This can make your coat heavy, but there are high-tech lighter weight fabrics you can use as well if that's a problem.  In the dead of winter there, you may be thrilled with a nice, heavy coat.  Great pattern, and congratulations on your fabric finds, and your sewing friend!  What a treat for both of you. :)

Mardel,  I think the Pro Woven might be almost too stiff for a women's shirt, unless you are doing the menswear look, although with just one layer it would probably be perfect.  DH likes a very stiff collar, and this works well for that.  This interfacing is what I used for the collar on my Vogue 8123 jacket (http://www.pbase.com/lianasews/image/54750839) I took to the fair, and it stands very well.

Ann, We get IFC on Time-Warner Cable, so I will see if I can get this.  Sounds wonderful!

I am pretty sure you can buy Kasha from the McPhee Workshop:

If she doesn't have, I don't know who would ;D

Amy, there was an article in Threads magazine a while ago with a bunch of ideas about making winter coats warmer. Maybe someone with an index can tell you which issue it was. I want to say it wasn't all that long ago, but I bought all the back issues off ebay late last year, and I may just be remembering one of them.

I did buy flannel-backed satin at Joann's for a jacket I haven't made yet, so you might want to check locally before you mail order it, if that's what you decide to use. It's pricey, and the 40% coupons help ;)

I used to make parkas when I lived in Labrador (daytime highs of minus 20C for months on end), and the general principle there is to make it windproof. With a parka, you use a high thread count cotton for a shell, and then a heavy wool melton as the inner layer, lined of course. There was a thread about this a while ago on SW, and someone there mentioned Thinsulate, or something like that, between the wool outer layer layer and the lining. Honestly, if it's really cold and the wind is blowing, you need something to stop the wind.
