Title: need skirt embellishment ideas Post by: mamafitz on June 30, 2006, 06:52:48 AM I made this skirt
recently: http://mamafitz.blogspot.com/2006/06/new-look-6596.html and I'm really happy with it. I want to make a few more for this summer, and have leftover fabric from this bag: http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5714/750/1600/brownaquaswingbag.jpg I don't know if you can tell, but the aqua is a very subtle stripe. I have plenty of the brown/aqua print for the skirt, I have only 1/4" yard (if even that much) of the stripe. Do you think the skirt would look nice with a small ruffle on the bottom? I can't think of anything else to do with it, and I really do like the two fabrics together. I have the same print in tangerine, and for that skirt I'm thinking to go find some tangerine or lemon yellow tulle and make a band on the bottom. Any other skirt ideas? Title: Re: need skirt embellishment ideas Post by: mardel on June 30, 2006, 07:03:35 AM That would be really cool, adding a ruffle,
or even just a band at the bottom of the skirt. It would make the
skirt look very up to date and would really elevate the style into
something special. Is there a way you can even make a narrow strip or
piping like band that accents or shows the stripe of the fabric?
That would be lovely too. Title: Re: need skirt embellishment ideas Post by: cmarie12 on June 30, 2006, 09:15:40 AM Linda, For the tangerine skirt, you can always cut some of the flowers out and layer them over each other at the hem to make a dimensional appliqued flower and a bead or pearl to the center and the hem of the skirt would look like a garden. I love the brown and aqua colors and I would definitely add the ruffle at the bottom in the stripe. You could use piping, patchwork, or applique as mentioned above at the bottom of the skirt to give each one a different look. I can't wait to see what you finally come up with! BTW, love the original Amy Butler version of the skirt! Title: Re: need skirt embellishment ideas Post by: mardel on June 30, 2006, 11:12:51 AM Ooh, really cute ideas Carolyn. Can't wait to see what you come up with Linda! Title: Re: need skirt embellishment ideas Post by: mamafitz on June 30, 2006, 11:37:26 AM I thought of this just now -- should I

I just made? (did that make sense?). I want to do one with a
flirty flounce too. :) I'm trying really hard to work on my casual wardrobe. I have such a hard time with casual stuff, I always want to make dressy fancy things. Title: Re: need skirt embellishment ideas Post by: artistwhosews on June 30, 2006, 02:12:19 PM I'd do nice BIG juicy pockets, or
binding on the hem edge of the skirt, or embroider some of the flowers and
motifs with a chain stitch on the lower edge of the skirt (add some beads
and sequins if you like shiny stuff). Another thing you might want to do
is slice the pattern horizontally in several sections and alter the
fabrics so you have horizontal stripes except the colors and patterns seem
subtle enough they won't be as highly contrasting. The fabric says "have fun!" to me. Hellenne Title: Re: need skirt embellishment ideas Post by: fzxdoc on June 30, 2006, 03:42:50 PM Such great ideas, Hellenne. Mardel, and
Carolyn. Makes me want to play with a skirt pattern too! Hope your b'day was a happy one, Linda! Best wishes! Title: Re: need skirt embellishment ideas Post by: BetsyV on June 30, 2006, 06:22:58 PM Quote from: mamafitz on June 30, 2006, 11:37:26

I thought of this just now -- should I shorten the skirts
so that they are same length WITH the ruffle as the one I just
made? Mamfitz My first reaction was yes, shorten the skirt, and have the finished length the same with ruffles or banding if that 's a comfortable length for you, but then I looked at your blog/photo, and I think I would add the ruffle or band to the plain length. It's an extra, so should add to the look. BetsyV Title: Re: need skirt embellishment ideas Post by: Marianne on June 30, 2006, 07:50:55 PM What about adding a 1" band with a 2 1/2"
ruffle five inches from the hem of the skirt-floating there? I also like
the idea of the big patch pockets, Hellenne. For the tangerine one, the floral garden hem sounds great, Carolyn. Stitcher's
