Title: Finished a skirt today. Post by: Susinok on May 25, 2006, 01:15:16 PM And wore it to work! ;D The picture of the skirt and the saga of the finishing is on my blog at http://www.susinok.com I love this skirt. A simple Butterick six panel A-line, side zipper. I used sueded microfiber. I love this fabric and I will plan on sewing with more microfiber in the future. today, can you get someone to snap a picture of you in it (maybe with
their camera phone)? It's always nice to see people in their new
things... BTW, pet your kitten for me! Lisa Title: Re: Finished a skirt today. Post by: Susinok on May 25, 2006, 02:29:21 PM I'll get a modeled shot online soon. It was
too busy this morning to get a picture. I think I'll buy a nice border print and make this pattern again. It was pretty easy. I'll post the pattern particulars, too, once I get home and know what they are.The pattern is still available from Butterick. Susan Title: Re: Finished a skirt today. Post by: Liana on May 25, 2006, 05:34:38 PM Great skirt, Susan! It looks like it
would be nice and swirly when you wear it. Very pretty fabric, too!
:) Isn't it nice to find a pattern you like so much that you want to
do it again? Title: Re: Finished a skirt today. Post by: Vicki on May 25, 2006, 09:16:52 PM Phew! I 1/2 years before sewing up!
mmmm....I have a few of those! Congrats on finishing ;D Title: Re: Finished a skirt today. Post by: Susinok on May 26, 2006, 04:15:06 AM The Modeled shot is up on my blog!
http://www.susinok.com One of my knitter pals took the picture at our
meeting at Borders last night. I'm standing there with a cocked hip, so
the hem looks uneven. Rest assured, the hem is even! I checked five dozen
times in the mirror. Must get more Microfiber. The pattern I used was Butterick 4136, view C. I shortened it for petite, and sewed the panels together 1 1/2 years ago and then finished it Wednesday evening with much swearing. A friend at work said that she cusses while sewing too. She thinks it's a mark of a good seamstress. Title: Re: Finished a skirt today. Post by: mardel on May 26, 2006, 07:29:51 AM Great skirt and it looks so nice on
you! 1 1/2 years huh? I think I have a few things that have
been sitting around here that long. Perhaps you will inspire
me. Title: Re: Finished a skirt today. Post by: cmarie12 on May 26, 2006, 08:32:28 AM Susi ~ I want to add my congrats on the skirt
also! I can't believe you waited 18 months to complete it especially
since it is so cute! Will we see more garments soon? And I
love your blog. I have bookmarked it so that it will go into my blog
reading rotation! Title: Re: Finished a skirt today. Post by: fzxdoc on May 26, 2006, 08:33:42 AM Susan, when I read on your 'blog that you cut
the skirt out 1 1/2 years ago and in the meanwhile lost the instructions,
the facing pattern piece AND the leftover fabric, I could tell that you
are one fearless sewist! Your skirt is great, and I like the top you
paired with it. Thanks so much for the entertaining 'blog read and
the wonderful photo. Title: Re: Finished a skirt today. Post by: Susinok on May 26, 2006, 10:53:32 AM Thank you everybody! I am encouraged! I love
the skirt, too. Wish the picture were better. I may take another one and
post it later. Meanwhile. I'll be trying to tissue fit a pattern this
weekend, a simple v-neck top with buttons. I'm also taking advantage of
some pattern sales to re-build my pattern stash. I'm a pretty fearless but easily angered sewer (and swearer, heh). I have always wanted to get to the point that I'm comfortable with sewing and the process becomes as pleasurable and fun as the planning and the product. Susan Title: Re: Finished a skirt today. Post by: Liana on May 26, 2006, 03:44:58 PM Susan, The skirt looks great on,
too! I have some projects that have been sitting quite a bit longer
than a year and a half! :-[ ;) The worst is a shirt I started for
Pearle before I moved my sewing area from the 2nd floor to the
basement. The pattern uses 2-piece sleeves, and I lost the back
sleeve pieces, and have never found the scraps, which is unbelievable, as
I thought I saved everything! Anyway, I just hung it away until they
turned up, with the front sleeves and cuffs pinned to the otherwise
finished shirt. It's a plaid, I know he would never wear
something that had contrasting sleeves, and so it hangs there rebuking
me. Title: Re: Finished a skirt today. Post by: Susinok on May 26, 2006, 07:26:45 PM I always figure these missing pieces will
turn up someday. I have to confess. When I said I'm a beginner sewer, I meant where it comes to using actual commerical patterns, but I was an SCAer (re-enactor) for 20 years and made my own (fairly easy, very early period) medieval clothing all that time. I would just look at a picture and figure it out somehow. I've always been afraid of commmercial patterns and I'll make a few things, get stressed out and then put the stuff away for a while. So putting bias tape on my skirt was business as usual and not fearlessness on my part. I am an old hand at winging it. Browsing the "big four" pattern books, I'm amazed at the huge choices in historical patterns available now. I'm jealous! I constructed henins (tall pointy hats with veil) out of posterboard with covered in cloth! How there are patterns for the complicated stuff! Hah Butterick even has a pattern for Scarlett's curtain dress! Someone needs to make it in gingham check with cherries on it... (you know, kitchen curtains...) I'm not a re-enactor anymore, but I do envy the availability of these patterns! My goal as a pattern sewer is to get comfortable enough with the process that I can sit down and make my clothes fit me well. I have so many fitting "challenges" it's not funny. Just about every bit of my body needs some sort of alteration. I'm sure I"m not alone in feeling this way, LOL. I just need to learn how to do it. A t-tunic just isn't going to cut it in the office. Title: Re: Finished a skirt today. Post by: fzxdoc on May 27, 2006, 06:15:24 AM Well, Susan, it looks as though you're
approaching the fitting thing wisely, one piece at a time. You've
found a skirt pattern that works well for you and have a plan for another
skirt using it (that makes it well on it's way to being a Tried and
True--TNT--pattern). Next, you can approach another wardrobe piece
and whip it in to shape. Since you have made medieval clothing, I
bet you'll be whipping out great things, just like your skirt, in no
time! Best of luck--and have fun doing it! Stitcher's
