Title: DGD Book Report as Sewing Project
Post by: Pinkscissors on May 22, 2006, 10:59:12 AM
I am in search of some info to help my 10-yo DGD with her book report/sewing project. She has to give her book report in the form of a presentation as the main character. In this case she is Mowgli from The Jungle Book. In addition to making her costume, she wants to dye some fake fur fabric she purchased to simulate a tiger skin. She purchased Craft Fancy Fur for $9.96 at Joann's in Glenview IL. It is light yellow with black stripes. She wants to dye it so that it is orange with black stripes. Can this be done with this fabric? Would we use Ritz fabric dye? Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

I kind of doubt that you can dye fake fur.  I think it's usually polyester, which you can't dye at home.  If it's nylon, it will be very heat sensitive, and might melt if you use hot water to try to dye it.  I have never tried this, but I saw at JoAnn's some spray paint for fabric.  That might work, and I think they had orange.  Good luck!  It sounds like quite the interesting project. :)

Liana, thank you so much for the information. I know nothing about dyeing fabric. I'll have her check back at her Joann's store for the paint. I will be visiting with them next week and helping her with her project. I'll post the results. Thanks again.

Glad to help, although I'm no expert!  Good luck, and please let us see photos of her costume, etc.! :)
