Looking for a Lagenlook pants pattern?
« on: July 24, 2017, 12:44:52 AM »
Hello,
My name is Sarah, and I'm completely new to artisansquare. I am just getting back into sewing and this is my first post, so I figured if I did anything wrong, at least posting it here would be less of a faux pas.

I've really gotten into the Lagenlook style recently. And obviously, I'm not the only one. There were a TON of threads that mentioned the word, and I had no idea where to even start.

I've bought several Yoshiko Tsukiori books that have a lot of designs that would work. I like that the patterns are included, even though I'm larger than her largest size, but I'm sure I can find tutorials on increasing pattern sizes.

But one thing I'm really looking for is like an extra wide pant. I bought these https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MFHIGZV/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1, and I'd like to make a pair of them. I like the way they almost look like a skirt. I don't like the way the 2 inch elastic folds over, though. I tried making a really big pair of pajama pants in hopes of recreating the look, but they turned out huge at the top and too narrow at the bottom. (I guess you could say I made them upside down?!)

I have looked EVERYWHERE for a pattern that can help me recreate this look without success. And now it's become something like a quest because I've spent so much time trying to find it.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Posts, patterns, tutorials, instructions, anything that might help?

I am really looking forward to learning a lot and being a part of this community!

Hi Sarah, and welcome to Stitcher's Guild!

Feel free to post anywhere.  As you've no doubt noted, there is a thread titled "Lagenlook, Arty, & Non-Mainstream Inspiration & Chat."  You may want to take a look at that thread, and perhaps post there.

In the meantime, the pants you got from Amazon are two layered, but what you said you liked about them was "the way they almost look like a skirt."  And that you "don't like the way the 2 inch elastic folds over."

You might want to take a look at Vogue 8955:

I'm not sure that this pattern is anything like what you want, but it does look like a skirt, doesn't have an elastic waistband and includes a narrow lining pant (a 2nd layer?) too.

Again, welcome to SG!

Lisa

I'd probably go for something like this and tweak it a bit, as it already has the relaxed feeling of the original:

Here are some other options that could be tweaked also:

I'm sure Burda has more options. I only quickly looked at about half of their women's pant offerings.

What you may want is information on making a pattern from your favorite ready-to-wear garment. Threads Magazine has published some articles, and then there is this book:

please keep all these culotte type pant suggestions coming! I am not looking for lagenlook, but want something skirt like, but with a divided pant type bottom... my current pattern favorite is:

http://www.namedclothing.com/shop/mimosa-culottes/

welcome Sarah Ann,

I think one of the important things to keep in mind if you recreate your desired pant...is use the right kind of fabric. It needs to be really lightweight. Guaze like! The double layer makes it not see through, but you will need the lighter weight to keep it drape-y and flowy.

mta...also very good selection of options from Indie pattern companies here:

Bessie, your first link doesn't work for me.  ;)

Culottes tutorial for summer time glamour............"Culottes, one of the most trendy styles of the 50's and 60's, are back!  Culottes are flared pants or shorts that can often look like a skirt or a dress when you're wearing them.  I have been trying to help you build a warm weather wardrobe that is both easy and practical  – and that is easy to make.

Here is another free pattern to add to your collection of projects for the summer."

strange...works for me. It's a Finnish pattern company...they have PDFs in English or you get printed patterns. (I can buy some of them locally.) Try the home page, see if that will work. They have a few other pants patterns that Sarah Anne might like...

WOW! So many great ideas! This gives me a LOT to work with! I just made the huge mistake of walking into a fabric store on my lunch hour with no patterns or even plan/solid idea and walking out with several yards of different fabrics. Now I've got some things I can DO with them! Thank you for all the great suggestions; I'll keep you posted, definitely!
