I usually look at SG on my desktop computer.  Just occasionally, without any action on my part, when I click to access a page it appears in what I assume is 'tablet' layout.  Narrow width, just the text of messages, no navigation buttons, no way of adding a comment. And there's no obvious way to get the usual format instead.  Annoying !  what could I be doing ? Thanks.
P.S. this is currently happening with the second page of the SWAP pre-rules discussion.

It hasn't happened to me but can I ask which browser you use and is it a Mac or Windows operationg system?  I'm still on Windows 7 and sometimes changing browsers helps. Also try pressing the 'F5' button, it helped when I got a strange view on the sewing place forum a little while ago.

I'm dreading having to change to W10 in the next few months.

I'm using a Mac.  I've had this happen using Safari on both OS Mohave and OS Catalina.
It is still happening for me in Safari on Catalina.
Hmm, it doesn't happen in Firefox, but I prefer not to have to keep changing browser. . .

P.S. ah, I get a correct response if I click on page 2 from SWAP 2020 > pre-rules discussion, in the general index for the whole site.
But I get the odd response if I click to go on to page 2 from page 1 within the pre-rules discussion.

Aargh, now it's happened with another thread accessed directly from the Index. . .  the Autumn 6PAC.

Well now, at least so far I've managed to solve the problem by using a different access route !  but which item goes wrong seems to be random  :D

Hi Lisanne, I'm on a Mac using OS Catalina.  I've just tried on safari on my Mac (typing this on my iPad) and I don't seem to see anything untoward.

When you say  it's what you assume is "tablet format " could you explain what you see in more detail - it's not just that the page hasn't loaded fully and you are seeing the page without css formatting is it?  I'd love to help but I'm not sure I totally understand what's happening and unfortunately it didn't happen when I tried to replicate on my Mac.

It's supposed to be "responsive" and switch views according to your device.  I don't have a tablet or a phone, so if you're having issues, please upload a screen shot.  If all else fails, I'll talk to the dev team and see if maybe I have the settings wrong somewhere.

As an example, here is what I get when I click to access page 2 of the SWAP pre-rules discussion from page 1.
It just goes down to the end of the quote from Susan.

As far as I can tell so far, this happens at random !  I get most pages correctly formatted.

Hi again Lisanne,  thanks for sending that screen grab.  In your screen grab I can see that safari is displaying the page using the "reader" function - you can see the grey icon to the left of the web address area.

I don't know why it's displaying that way if you haven't chosen that as your preference for reading web pages but I have replicated your view of the SWAP page by setting my preferences to use the reader.  You can click the grey icon to display the page in the usual web format rather than the reader format.

There is a setting in preferences where you can set individual web sites to use/not use the reader function.

Safari>Preferences>Websites>General>Reader

I hope that helps  :)

Lisanne

Many Thanks Turquoise - I didn't know there was that setting in Safari, and even less did I know how it had got itself set to Reader for artisanssquare (or why, with that setting, I didn't get the Reader version of every page here. . .).
But anyway changing that seems to have solved the problem !
