FINISHED Your Button Shop Giveaway
« on: June 23, 2018, 03:49:31 PM »
As many of you know, I have a small button shop I run as a hobby.  Every now and then I go through the inventory & cull stuff out, so that I don't outgrow my space or become so cluttered up I can't find anything.

Usually I bundle up a bunch of miscellaneous slow sellers, shop orphans, opened packages, etc. and sell them off as a mystery "grab bag".  But, I've been thinking that a giveaway would be a bit more fun.

So...as I've never does this before, I'm gonna start with a single item, and see how it goes.  If all goes well, I might do this again in the future.

Every registered member is eligible to win; no subscription needed.

If the winner is in the USA, I will spring for the shipping.  Otherwise, I ask the winner to pay for the postage (and I warn you up front the postage may cost far more than the item is worth, which is one of the reasons I don't sell buttons internationally any more).

To "enter" to win this item, just post here; answering one of these questions:

1) What happened to cause you to start sewing?

2) What was the first item you remember finishing, and being really satisfied with?

3) If you collect any kind of sewing related item (besides a stash of stuff you plan (or hope) to use), tell us about it.

4) Why do you want to win this item?

5) If you don't win this item, who do you think should -and why?

You may make multiple posts, to increase your chances to win, but please answer a different question each time, or post a different answer to the previous one.  I'm *hoping* this thread will be fun to read, regardless whether someone is entering the contest or not, and I think it might be a good way to get to know each other.

If you wish to respond to someone else's comment, please do so under your own (entering) post, separated with a line like this:
_______________________________

just to keep things tidy.

I will choose a random winner on July 30, and my decision will be final.  I'll send the winner a private message concerning the details for mailing it, and send it out with my next batch of button orders.

Finally, watch this post now and then, because I may have to edit it if anything needs to be changed for any reason.

The item up for grabs is:

A Loran / Dritz oval wooden shawl pin.  Suitable for loosely woven or knitted bags, capes, shawls, or scarves.  The 2 1/2 x 3 1/2" oval disk has a wavy shape, and the matching pin is a shade over 5" long.  The picture is a standard product photo, so the one you receive will NOT look exactly the same, but will be very similar.

Hi Dragon Lady.....
I'm not sure why there are no replies here...but what caused me to start sewing was that I felt I could make clothing for myself or my daughter, with fabrics of my choice.  It was also a way to release my creativity.
I think that is what has me continuing sewing 30 years later ;)

Answer to #1

The job I was working at eliminated my position and offered a position as a production sewer. I needed the money to support two kids so I did it but wasn't happy about it at the time. It took me years to figure out it was a good thing in the long run :)

Answer #2

Jeans. I had purchased Angela's Wolfs jean pattern along with her Craftsy class for fitting jeans. The first pair I made blew me away that I could make something that didn't have that homemade look but wasn't exactly my style. That brings me to the second pair, where I made some changes to her the pattern; straighten legs and raised the waist. I was so happy when I got them finished! They are still my favorite "go to" pair.

Congrats, Syndi!

Lovely shawl pin, but not something I really need, so I passed on the contest.
DragonLady, it was very nice of you to do this.  People may have been confused by your apparent typo saying you'd pick a winner on July 30th, rather than June 30th.

I'm so sorry, all, for any confusion that caused. :(

lol

Every April, I just scramble them all up so by the time February comes by I'm all ready for August, and that makes March, October, January and November a breeze -doesn't do much for December & July, though, and...if this thread can be believed, putting June second in the lineup this year may have been a mistake.

I have been working on my crochet and knitting skills....so hopefully I'll be motivated ;)
I've been interested in adding crochet to woven lately and was thinking of adding a crochet border to a woven duster....we'll see how that goes...

To answer the question "what made you start sewing", we were required to take Home Ec in the 7th grade.  We made a white apron with a red bib front...school colors.  I loved doing it!  I probably never wore it, but I still have it, and remember Mrs. Fuller with appreciation.

After I got married and money was tight, I began to sew seriously, but was discouraged with my results.

Then I found a treasure trove of independent designers who had patterns that were better, and quality fabrics that were available online!  That was what I was missing!

So now I sew almost ALL my clothes, most of my home dec needs, gift items, and even large projects that were intimidating at first.  Need to make a sturdy cat carrier?  A car cover? Floor to ceiling lined drapes? A tuxedo?  I know how!

Now a GOOD day is when I can sew!

To answer your question about WHY I sew -
*It gives me a way to make clothes with good quality fabric.
*It gives me a way to make clothes that fit me without alteration costs.
*It fulfills my creative soul!
*It lets me use colors that flatter me.
*I enjoy the compliments.
*It is economically smart.
*It is low pressure in a high pressure world.
*It allows me to be flexable in my choices.
*It allows me to have a personalized color coordinated updated wardrobe.

I could go on....
