Creative Bug
« on: March 31, 2018, 08:50:37 AM »

I happen to look at Creative Bug more than Craftsy these days, so thought I would start a thread for people to mention what’s coming up.
It's been a subscription site from the start, you can watch everything while you're a subscriber.  And each month you belong you can add a class to your personal library, which you can then still watch when you're not a subscriber.

Here’s the general link to Creative Bug sewing classes.
https://www.creativebug.com/classes/sewing

There’s a free ‘watch for a month free’ offer on at the moment.
https://www.creativebug.com/trial/create-account?theme=joann30&trk_msg=MGC4CBLPQ0FKP77KB00TDDAQA0&trk_contact=AD38N104E8SDOPATMAOECLJHFK&trk_sid=UET3IIGL2I0TS1JEVURJAA0K5K&utm_source=cb&utm_medium=email&utm_term=1+Month+and+30%25+Off+JOANN&utm_campaign=AprLookbook.03.30.18

There’s usually a new sewing class each month.
The new sewing class video in April will be Sonya Philip of 100 Acts patterns, on making her Tunic No.1 with variations, includes pdf pattern.
preview here :
https://www.creativebug.com/classseries/april-lookbook--2018/wardrobe-basics-sewing-tunic-no-1-with-sonya-philip

It's not a site for people who love couture levels of sewing quality, but I find it fun relaxing viewing.

Strongly featured in the Creative Bug sewing section :

Cal Patch - video versions of her pattern drafting book, plus full video sewing instructions
https://www.creativebug.com/search/results?query=cal%20patch
Her book is rather non-visual, with few diagrams and minimal sewing instructions.  These videos fill that gap.

Deborah Kreiling (and others) from Simplicity (the other classes include pdf patterns, you have to buy the patterns used in these classes !)

Fancy Tiger Crafts

Rae Hoekstra of Made by Rae patterns
https://www.creativebug.com/search/results?query=Rae%20Hoekstra

Sonya Philip of 100 Acts of Sewing patterns

I've been a member/subscriber to Creativebug for a few months now, I specifically joined to get access to Sonya Phillip's Shirt no. 1 class and pattern, thinking I'd probably unsubscribe after my free month. Well, I am really enjoying the content. As Lisanne says, this is not fine art, or couture sewing, but it makes all sorts of crafts and handwork easily accessible. I sort of think of it as grass-roots approach to making.

I've enjoyed Lisa Congdon's flower drawing class, and I can't wait for the Tunic no. 1 class to land!

How do the creative bug classes compare with Craftsy?

I suppose I might have to take advantage of the free month.

I think Warpjr's comment is a good one about the character of Creative Bug classes.

Lisanne, this pattern PDF includes full detailed written instructions for size selection, cutting and sewing the top. I've found written instructions included in about 50% of the PDFs with classes on Creativebug.

On Rae's site there are a number of great tutorials on her site, including free tutorials detailing the different binding methods.

Many thanks, Rene, for the clarification - I had downloaded the pattern but not 'taken in' that it includes instructions !

You're welcome Lisanne! I was quite pleased when I watched the class when first posted. In fact, the PDF was available for download a few days before the class launched, which was a pleasant surprise. Cute little top. Not sure if it's my "style" but still it would be a fun little sew for Summer. I'm contemplating the little ruffled bottom for it.

I'm really enjoying Creativebug. Some of their art and craft instruction is top notch but presented in nice bite sized bits. From inception CB was designed for the busy woman who only had small snippets of "me time" so they could explore their creative side. They are proud of having so many classes at 20 minutes or less to introduce techniques and activities.

The Alabama Chanin classes are great and well presented. Sonya Philip is wonderfully goofball and laid-back. Fancy Tiger has some nice tops. There is a daily series that changes; this month it's drawing animals. These are little short videos, often 5 minutes or so, to work as a catalyst to creativity. The paper art and bookbinding classes are top notch. Jody Alexander is well respected and sought after as an instructor in bookbinding and Faith Hale has her degree in bookbinding. Everything is designed to be accessible and encourage creativity.

A lot of classes are geared for kids and cover most ages. It's a great way to keep children involved and busy during the Summer.

I absolutely love Creativebug! FanGurl here for CB. Watch something every few days.

PS: Sonya has Dress #2 coming as a class in June.   ;)
