I notice that some of us have avatars and some don't - I'm in the latter group ;-) This is still on the "to be addressed" list? Not a huge hurry-up deal, just don't want to remain quite that anonymous  8)

Yes.  I don't know why this server has so many issues with image directories, but I am working on it.

Yes, @DragonLady , they are. I'd still wish for them to be darker, but this will do. You've got plenty of other things on your cyber-plate.

Thanks for looking into this.

Question about using the "unread posts" from the home page...

Last night, when I clicked on this, I got an entire page of topics with unread posts. Didn't have time to read, so I thought... tomorrow.

Well, this is tomorrow ;-) When I clicked on that same Unread Posts link, I got 3 or 4 topics! Where did all the others go??? I certainly didn't read them, I just saw the page that listed them.

Joyce P

Related to this, although not the same...

I went to the SWAP2019 forum. Indigotiger's topic is the only one showing up on the above Unread Posts listing. BUT... almost all of the individual topics have "new" postings, that is (to me) postings that I have not read. Why are they missing from Unread Posts lists?

No wonder I thought there wasn't much activity in the forums!!

fzxdoc

@Joyce P , when you click on Unread Posts, it doesn't show all unread posts, just the unread posts since your last visit. So because you visited last night and viewed the Unread Posts list, it started a new one since then for you to look at the next time you clicked.

If you want to see all of your unread posts, click on that option by clicking on All Unread Topics in the upper left hand side of the page that shows your current Unread Posts. All of those unread posts that you saw yesterday should still be there.

I am not getting notifications either as alerts or by email.  I did find the place to change this in my profile.  Previously I'd changed it on each topic I wanted to follow.

Any news on an update, @DragonLady ? When installed, I hope it fixes the New post button so the link actually goes to the latest new post. That's the only problem that is truly bugging me.

Ladyhawke

To be clear, in order to see any posts, I have to subscribe for $35?

fzxdoc

Yes, Ladyhawke, to quote DragonLady: "Much of the forum is now hidden unless you are registered, logged in, and a subscriber."

Here's what she says about the benefits of being a subscriber:

What does SG do with $35.00 per year?
-Brings together people from all walks of life who share a common love of sewing.
-Pays the bills without selling or sharing any of your personal information.
-Provides an ad-free experience for everyone.
-Provides an up-to-date cross-platform venue that works on all your favorite devices.
-Stores, protects and allows you to share your messages, posts, photos and tutorials.
-Helps keep the community active and supports its growth.

With all due respect to DL, that is a ridiculous business plan. How is a newbie supposed to determine if joining is worth the price if they cannot read anything? I can well afford this, but will not on basic principles. As a seasoned sewer, I would be paying mostly to include my expertise, albeit sporadically. My videos, should I choose to produce anything, will be protected? And I get to pay to produce content? By comparison, I happily subscribe to Cooks Illustrated, where I get information I could not otherwise receive.

I realize that DL should profit from this endeavor. Every issue of Threads has an advertisement for something I did not realize existed or might need. I like that and think that profit plan makes sense.

This one does not.

You can't read a magazine without buying it, either.  We do offer a single month subscription option for those who aren't certain, just as magazines sell a single issue.

Quote from: undefinedI can well afford this, but will not on basic principles.

No one is compelled to purchase a subscription; many of the threads here are still free to read, and some are still open to free participation by everyone.

Quote from: undefinedAs a seasoned sewer, I would be paying mostly to include my expertise, albeit sporadically. My videos, should I choose to produce anything, will be protected?

I'm not certain I understand your question.... If you post here, I will host it.  Doing so costs money, and that money comes from subscriptions.  While I cannot guarantee nothing will ever go wrong or that posts will never be lost, I do take precautions every day to try to prevent issues -and have done so every single day since SG began.

Also, if you post something in areas that are currently subscription-only, the status of those areas may change in the future as SG changes and grows. In general, I advise against posting anything on the internet you don't want to risk being seen by people other than those you intended to see it.

Quote from: undefinedAnd I get to pay to produce content?

No one is paying to produce content.

Paying for a subsciption here is like renting a reception hall for a wedding.  You're not paying the rent to be married.  You're not paying the rent to visit your family and friends, you're paying for a place to hold your party. A building isn't free; and neither is maintaining SG.

Here on SG you're paying for a place to discuss sewing topics, share your plans, ask for help with your projects and receive feedback for your finished works.

Quote from: undefinedI realize that DL should profit from this endeavor

Thank-you.  I appreciate your consideration.

QuoteEvery issue of Threads has an advertisement for something I did not realize existed or might need. I like that and think that profit plan makes sense.

Yet, despite all those ads, you still have to pay for the magazine. Also, except for "letter to the editor" or the vary rare occasion of being featured in the magazine, you cannot interact with the authors, have your photos published, or ask for clarification of points you don't understand.  In short, it's apples and oranges.

Further, I tried selling advertisements here for years.  While some of the wonderful companies who chose to sponsor us found a mutual benefit to paying for space here, others did not.  The proliferation of ad-blocking software and changes to the ways advertisements appear on the pages simply made it impossible for some companies to see a good return on the investment.

I understand my decision to switch to a subscription model is controversial and that many people disagree with it. I can only reiterate that I've made this choice because I believe it is the very best choice for keeping SG alive and healthy for the years to come.

Not at this time (I just checked last night).

Kathryn noticed there is a news item about an update to the forum.  It was posted a couple of weeks ago, but when I downloaded the file it was empty, so after that I just ignored it, and checked the dev site directly instead.  But it is fixed now, so I've got the files now. It's going to require changes to a LOT of files, so I will have to put us into maintenance mode when I'm ready to back everything up and install the patches.

The plan right now is to try to tackle it bright and early tomorrow, but it might have to wait 'til Friday. Either way, I'll let everyone know when I'm ready to begin, and as always if we go down just be patient; I'll have us back up and running asap.
