Title: Sandbox!
Post by: Lisa on February 01, 2017, 05:04:00 AM
Please try out things here.  Post pictures, make links, try formating or other things you'd like to see in your posts.

When you're finished, just leave the results here.  If you don't get the results you were trying for, definitely leave your efforts here, and we'll see if we can see what went wrong and try to help.

Thanks!

Lisa

Hi mods,I miss the 3 drop down boxes in - Attachments and other options - to upload 1 or 3 pictures at the same time from my PC. I don't have Flikr or other outside photo storage.  ;)  ;D

I couldn't upload a picture of my fabric postcard with an embroidered fringed heart and found a way around it.  ;D I uploaded the fringed heart as an avatar,(I will remove later, not now,or the heart below disappears too), then copied and pasted it.   ;D

Pina, as you probably already know, DL is asking folks to refrain from uploading any photos now until things are more stable. It's OK to get photos from a URL, though.

It's good to know that the Attachments option needs to be investigated, though. As soon as uploading appears to be stable, I'm sure DL will look into it.

Hi Elephun!

It lets you make tables that will keep ordered rows and columns. Clicking the button gets you this.
Code: [Select]
[table]
[tr]
[td][/td]
[/tr]
[/table]

The part in the middle:
Code: [Select]
[tr]
[td][/td]
[/tr]
represents a single row, with a single datum entry.  For each additional entry you want to make in that row, you'll need to duplicate the middle of that.  This part:
Code: [Select]
[td][/td]
So if I want to have the first row say Performances; Once; Twice; Three Times.  I'd need to add three instances of the td code and fill in those entries between the td code sets, which would look like this:
Code: [Select]
[table]
[tr]
[td]Performances[/td][td]Once[/td][td]Twice[/td][td]Three Times[/td]
[/tr]
[/table]

The second line entry in my table might say "Lead Performer; Adams; Baker; Cooper"
The third line entry in my table might say "Reviews; 2 good; 1 good/1 bad; 3 indifferent"

First I would need two new rows, and (tr codes) and then data fields for each of the rows, like this:
Code: [Select]
[table]
[tr]
[td]Performances[/td][td]Once[/td][td]Twice[/td][td]Three Times[/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td][/td][td][/td][td][/td][td][/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td][/td][td][/td][td][/td][td][/td]
[/tr]
[/table]
When I fill in the data, it looks like this:
Code: [Select]
[table]
[tr]
[td]Performances[/td][td]Once[/td][td]Twice[/td][td]Three Times[/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td]Lead Performer[/td][td]Adams[/td][td]Baker[/td][td]Cooper[/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td]Reviews[/td][td]2 good[/td][td]1 good/1 bad[/td][td]3 indifferent[/td]
[/tr]
[/table]
which would display like this:
PerformancesOnceTwiceThree Times
Lead PerformerAdamsBakerCooper
Reviews2 good1 good/1 bad3 indifferent

You'll notice that the tags make room in each column for the largest entry in that column.  If you want to space them out a bit, you could add a couple of spaced after the "Adams"  and the "1 good/1 bad" entries (but inside their respective td tags. And you could make the first column entries bold type and add a colon inside the relevant td tag like this:
Code: [Select]
[table]
[tr]
[td][b]Performances[/b]:[/td][td]Once[/td][td]Twice[/td][td]Three Times[/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td][b]Lead Performer[/b]:[/td][td]Adams  [/td][td]Baker[/td][td]Cooper[/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td][b]Reviews[/b]:[/td][td]2 good[/td][td]1 good/1 bad  [/td][td]3 indifferent[/td]
[/tr]
[/table]
which would then look like this:

Performances:OnceTwiceThree Times
Lead Performer:Adams  BakerCooper
Reviews:2 good1 good/1 bad  3 indifferent

The Table codes aren't needed most of the time, but they're very handy when they are.  Give it a try if you like!

I'm bookmarking this

So, being as I am somewhat ignorant on that, how will you go about "bookmarking" this so you can find it? I usually just resort to saving things to a word doc, kept in my Stitchers Guild folder on the PC.

Long ago on my old PC I would save things to favorites, but I like too much I guess and after a while I could find nothing anyway. Eagerly awaiting your reply. ;)

BTW: I can see myself using that table feature in the future.

Well I didn't really bookmark it. I actually pinned the post to one of my Pinterest boards. I use Pinterest to keep track of lots of things. I use secret boards for pins that really wouldn't interest many other people, like this type of thing. I happened to save this one to a public board, though.

I've got a Pinterest bookmarklet in my Chrome toolbar and it sometimes allows me to do pins with text if there's no appropriate picture to pin, like here. I just change the description before saving it, and the words in the colored box change accordingly. If I wait to change the description until after I've pinned it, the words in the colored box won't change.

It's not too pretty, but you can re-pin it if you want. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/257831147398126578/ (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/257831147398126578/)

Rene, there is a way to bookmark a particular post.

First thing is to click on the title line (for me, it's in blue) that will give you the link to that exact post. Doing that will re direct you to that post. Then you can go to your bookmark link in whichever browser you use. For me, it's Explorer. It's a star, next to a book icon.

When I click on that star icon (after having accessed or clicked on the particular post I want the computer to recognize) then it will display a box and I can add it to my "favorites" list.

Yep.  This board doesn't have a "bookmark" feature, but as Sewsy says, you can get the url of a particular post by right clicking on the "subject line (aka the "re" line) of the particular post and choosing the appropriate entry.  In Chrome it's "Copy link address."   Then you can do as you like with it.  This is the link to my "table post:"

http://artisanssquare.com/sg/index.php?topic=122.msg778#msg778

If you click on that, it should take you directly back to that post.  Or you can use that url in a "pretty link"  "my table post (http://artisanssquare.com/sg/index.php?topic=122.msg778#msg778)."

Hi,I started a new topic, sewing machine maintenance, with blog links and other pictures. When I wanted to preview my comments,I tried several times,I read ............  ???     ???

You don't have permission to access /sg/index.php on this server.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I deleted the new topic and copied the comments for now. Just testing some of the pictures and links, they work in the Sandbox .  ;D

This picture  (http://www.agreatnotion.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/machine-mess-1024x351.jpg) is too large to show,I hid it in the topic too.

Morgan and Pina, if you don't mind report your findings in our Bug Reports topic here:

http://artisanssquare.com/sg/index.php?topic=31.0

There are still some bugs that DL is swatting, and what you are seeing are two of them. I've experienced the same.

When I've gotten the 403 error, I've just copied my post, closed out of SG, reopened it again, and posted it with no problems. I don't know if that will work for you, but it worked for me.

Thanks!

You can post photos from other websites, like pattern websites or a photo hosting site like Flickr, but at this point you shouldn't upload any photos from your computer, Judith, until DL gives us the go-ahead.

Might someone have a moment to help me with my avatar, please?  I don't understand how/why if the pic is right side up in my photos (on my iPad), but when I import the image here, I'm in my head.  Ack.  I don't understand the lingo to turn myself right side up again.  No rush, because I know you're all so busy. Thank you.
Title: Re: Sandbox!

Meg, have you tried rotating the photo upside down in your iPad and saving it there, then importing the upside down photo to see if it ends up rightside up here? Or,better yet, just rotate the photo there a full 360 and save it.  That might rewrite the EXIF orientation tag on your photo correctly in your iPad. Then perhaps it will upload correctly. (You can use your Photo app to rotate your photo)

Do you have a photo hosting account or blog that you could upload your photo to first, correct the rotation there, and then use its url there for your avatar photo?

Great!

Good to know that rotating your photo in your iPad 360 degrees and saving it allowed you to upload that photo to your avatar section of your profile right side up.

Karen,

I don't know how long this will last (Shutterfly images tend to post, then disappear...so we'll see).

What I did was click on your first link, the one ending "hczsW", then letting the envelope spit out the image.  Then right click on the image and copy the image url, then paste it between img tags.  Then, because the image is a bit large, add " width=350" inside the opening img tag.  Note that there is a space between "img" and "width" like this:

Code: [Select]
Give it a try (and we'll both see if the images survive for much time...

Now what did I do wrong? Because it's a url, not a jpeg!

But how do I get a .jpg file reference when I've been told it needs to be on Flickr or other image storage sites? Puzzled newbie again.

You didn't use the image (ending in .jpg), but the address from your browser's address box.

But since you're using Flickr (which requires that there be a link back to Flickr, but is willing to supply the code you need, there's an easier way:

1.  On the image's Flickr page (where your link takes me) you'll find a "Share Photo" arrow (an outline that curves up and to the right, which is in the lower right-hand corner of the black panel the image sits on).  Click that arrow, and you'll get a pop-up window.

2.  On the pop-up window, the first thing you'll see is a row that says "Share  Embed  Email BBCode."  Click on "BBCode" so that it is underlined.

3.  Then below the text box, you'll see a size with a drop-down arrow.  Click the arrow so that you can see the available sizes.  For SG, generally the best size is the smallest "medium," so click that.

4.  Then copy the text box and bring it back here.  Paste it in the reply window and post.  Your image will show the title and your username from Flickr, but you can get rid of those since clicking on the image will take you back to Flickr, which is sufficient to satisfy their userterms.

Please give it a try!!!!

Ah, I see you figured out why it didn't work while I was typing, but hopefully the Flickr instructions will still be useful.

Please give it a try...then if you want to get rid of the extra "stuff" from the Flickr code, I'll show you how to do that too!

Title: Re: Sandbox!
Post by: Lisa on February 16, 2017, 11:47:19 PM
On sites that don't supply BBCode for you, you right click on the image you need the image url for, and depending on your browser (what are you using?) you'll see something like "copy image address" (What Google's Chrome will say).  That will get you the image url. ;) ;D

If you have a different browser, and aren't finding what you need, tell me which browser...

When you paste the Flickr code, it shows up in four lines in the editing window.  The first two are what you need to display the image and have the required link-back to Flickr.  The second two lines can be deleted, as they supply two additional links, and are not required by Flickr.

So paste the code and delete the last two lines after you paste them in your reply.

Give it a try!!!!

To say it another way, yes, you can delete the extraneous information from Flickr if you would like, Marniesews. Just make sure you include the portion between the first
Code: [Select]
[img] and the
Code: [Select]
[/img]  brackets.

So if you took this string (from your post)

Code: [Select]
[url=https://flic.kr/p/QWZREn][img]https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2054/32127504093_d47d942f39_n.jpg[/img][/url][url=https://flic.kr/p/QWZREn]#028 view of back joint[/url] by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/147378064@N05/]Jacky Fraser[/url], on Flickr[img][/img]
and deleted everything but this

Code: [Select]
[img]https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2054/32127504093_d47d942f39_n.jpg[/img]
you'd get this:

I got into SG Classic and saw this post from Lisa on making clickable links, and thought I'd carry it over here because it is helpful information. Hopefully all of the formatting and links still work. Fingers crossed!

Quote
There are 3 ways to make words in your post be a "clickable" link.  Two of them will make the link show only the words that you want them to be (instead of the whole web address).

1. Start with the words you want to be "clickable." This is probably the best method!  ;) Highlight the words in your post that you would like to be "clickable" as a link (In this example, we'll use the word "this."), then click the "insert hyperlink" button (It's the one that looks like a globe w/ a piece of paper in front of of it--2nd from the left in the 2nd row--it will pop up its name if you put your cursor over it).  This will put BBCode tags around your text...it will look like this:
Code: [Select]
"this (http://this)" Note that if you want the quotations marks to be part of the link, you highlight those too...if you don't highlight them they won't be part of the link (I didn't want them to be part of the link in my example).  Then put your cursor between the "[url" and the "]" before the word "this", then insert an equal sign and the web address the link should point to.  So if you were going to link to yahoo, you'd add the address like this:
Code: [Select]
"this (http://www.yahoo.com)" which will yield "this".  If you didn't want quotation marks around your link, you'd take the quotation marks out :
Code: [Select]
this (http://www.yahoo.com), which would get you a link w/out the quotation marks: this

2. Start w/ the BBCode Tags. Click the "insert hyperlink" button (It's the one that looks like a globe w/ a piece of paper in front of of it--2nd from the left, 2nd row--it will pop up its name if you put your cursor over it).  You'll get: , then put your cursor after "[url" and before the "]".  Add "=ADDRESS" there.  Then between the brackets"][" put in the name of the thing you want it to be called.  So your link would be:

Code: [Select]
search engine (http://www.google.com)
which would yield: search engine

3. Just type the url or web address.  It's not pretty, but it works...  For instance, www.google.com. There is no special code I've added to that.  This board  recognizes that it's a web address, and it is clickable.  But it's not very "pretty" and on some boards if the web address is a long one, it can make some people have to scroll back and forth to read the posts on the rest of the page.  So you'll want to try to avoid using this method.  But if one of the others doesn't work for you, this will!  Pretty is good (so you'll want to try one of the other methods), but posting is better(so use this one if the others are not working for you)!! ;D

Note that whichever way you start out, the result is the same—a clickable link!  If you want to practice making links before you put them in one of your regular posts, be sure to try them out in the Sandbox—if you have trouble, that's the place to ask questions, so we can see what you've done and give you any hints you need!  Have fun posting links! ;D

Lisa

How do I post pictures?.. I'm using an iPad
Title: Re: Sandbox!
Post by: fzxdoc on February 18, 2017, 02:11:29 PM
Effie, with an iPad, you can post photos that you have on a photo hosting site such as Flickr, since that site gives you the URL (web address) of the image itself. Even so, highlighting that entire URL can be challenging on an iPad, which likes to select a few words to highlight, not an entire string.

On the iPad, when trying to post photos from other sites like 'blogs, etc, I don't know a way to get the URL of the image itself, something that is done by right-clicking on a PC or CTRL-clicking on a Mac. Usually, when you press your finger on a photo on a website, you get a "Copy" option, not "Copy Image Location" or "Copy Image URL", which is what is needed.

As far as I know, there's no way to directly upload a photo (via Attachments) from an iPad. At this point, we're not supposed to use the Attachments option anyway until some of the bugs have been worked out.

Will wait for the bugs to be sorted.. usually it's  a case of going to manage attachments and picking a picture from your photo library and it's done.

I tried to insert a photo using the technique that worked last night but I left in the [url] and it didn't work. I went back to modify it and repeated the process being careful to delete everything following the [/img] but still nothing appeared.

Now I really look a twerp! I'd like to delete the failing attempts and try again but I've not spotted how to delete a post, only to modify it. Can someone advise please?

Hi Marnie, we can't delete our posts. It is possible to go back in and edit something that's already posted, but I think you know how to do that already. If not, just say and someone will explain the process.
Title: Re: Sandbox!
Post by: fzxdoc on February 18, 2017, 10:07:30 PM
Marnie, no worries about the many failed posts. No need to delete them. The Sandbox is here for trying, and trying again if necessary.

To figure out what to delete, just go back and re-read the posts that Lisa and/or I wrote to you, and you'll see what to delete on that huge Flickr string. Basically you delete everything except what's between  the
Code: [Select]
[img] and the
Code: [Select]
[/img]
So delete everything before that first
Code: [Select]
[img] and after the second
Code: [Select]
[/img]
To reiterate what I wrote to you:

So if you took this string (from your earlier post)

Code: [Select]
[url=https://flic.kr/p/QWZREn][img]https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2054/32127504093_d47d942f39_n.jpg[/img][/url][url=https://flic.kr/p/QWZREn]#028 view of back joint[/url] by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/147378064@N05/]Jacky Fraser[/url], on Flickr[img][/img]
and deleted everything but this

Code: [Select]
[img]https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2054/32127504093_d47d942f39_n.jpg[/img]
you'd get this:

Keep trying! You'll get the hang of it! :)

Yes, Marniesews, that's a link, not an image. An image will end in .jpg , usually

I don't subscribe to Google photos, so I can't test an image, and when I right click on your image there, I get only link options, not the option to "Copy Image URL" or "Copy Image Location". From what I see under the Sharing options on that site, only the links are shared, not the actual photos.

My pleasure, Marnie.  Happy to help.

Kathryn

ETA: If you want your photo to link back to Flickr whenever someone clicks on it and still have the photo only posted here, you have to leave more of that long string in. If you'd like to do that let me or Lisa know.

Deleting everything before and after the "img" tags, though is the most straightforward and simplest way to do it.

Where are the directions for inserting a photo into a post?
Title: Re: Sandbox!
Post by: fzxdoc on February 19, 2017, 03:39:51 PM
Hi Mary V, here you go:

Posting Photos on SG

From a website:
1. Go to the website and find the photo you want to share here.
2. Right-click on that photo if using a PC. If using a Mac, Control-Click.
3. For Internet Explorer: select Properties from the drop down menu. In the middle of that window you will see URL: http://. That is the beginning of the URL that you need to copy and paste here. Be sure to copy the whole long string of code.
For Mozilla, right-click on the photo and select “Copy Image Location” from the drop-down menu.
4. Come back to SG and position your cursor in your post. Paste the copied information.
5. Highlight that entire string of code that you just pasted and click on the little picture icon at the top of your post.
6.  When you then click Post or Preview, the picture will appear within your post.

Using a photo-hosting site like Flickr:

1.  Go to Flickr and click on the photo that you want to share here. That opens the photo in its own window

2. In the lower right hand corner, click on the little curvy arrow (the Share This Photo arrow).

3. In the box that opens, Under "CODE" select "BB code" on the right side just above the little window that shows the code.

4. Select the photo size you want. "Small" or "Medium" work good here.

5. Highlight the code in the box (if it's not already highlighted), copy it, come back here, and paste that code into your post. (Note: You do not have to do anything else (like clicking on the little picture icon). Just paste the code that you copied from Flickr)

6. When you select "Post" or "Preview" you will be able to see your photo in the post.

Using an iPad with Flickr:

1. Click on the Safari icon and go to your Flickr account.  Do not use the Flickr app. The Photostream page should open up.

2. On the Photostream page, select the photo by double clicking it. The photo will open in a new page.

3.  In the lower right hand corner, click on the little curvy arrow (the Share This Photo arrow).

4.  In the box that opens, Under "CODE" select "BB code" on the right side just above the little window that shows the code.

5.  Select the photo size you want. "Small" or "Medium" work good here.

6. Next put your finger in the box with the long string of code until you get the pop up option to Select All.  Choose it. Then select Copy.

7.  Come back here and Paste the code into your post. (Note: You do not have to do anything else [like clicking on the little picture icon]. Just paste the code that you copied from Flickr)

8. When you choose Preview or Post the photo will appear.

Using an Attachment with a Mac when the photo is on your Desktop or in iPhoto:

To post photos without using a photohosting site, you have to use the "Additional Options" selection shown in the lower left corner below the Reply posting box where you type the text of your post.

To attach a photo to a post when the photo is saved on your Mac or in iPhoto:

1.  Click Additional Options below the posting box
2.  Click the "Choose File" oval after the word Attach.
3.  Now you must browse through your Mac to find the photo. When you have found that photo file, click on it.
to get a photo that is on your desktop or in a folder, you'll see the file name right there.
to get a photo that is in iPhoto, you must scroll down the left side of the browsing window that opens when you click "choose file".
Scroll down until you see "Photos" under the Media section.  That opens the iPhoto photo collection and you can find your photo there.
4.  Once you have clicked on the photo or the file name, it is ready to be attached. Just complete typing your post and when you click "Post" the photo will appear beneath your post. The photo will not appear when you click "Preview" (do not choose that option or you will have to reattach the file), only when you "Post".

There is a limitation on the size of the photo that you can put as an attachment. It's a huge pain of a restriction, too. The file size has to be smaller than 192 kB.  You should check the size of your photo before you try to attach it. In iPhoto, click on the photo and its data appears in the lower left corner. You'll see its file size there. Just make sure it's smaller than 192 kB.

If it's larger than 192 kB, you need to change its size and save it to the desktop. That way the original photo is unchanged in iPhoto.

To resize a photo using iPhoto:

1. Open iPhoto
2. Select the image and double click on it to open the editing box.
3. Click on Email below the photo
4. Choose the size smaller than 192kB (Medium  usually works best)
5. Click Compose.
6. Next the email window will open.  Save that photo that shows up there by right-clicking (ctrl-click) on it to bring up a drop down menu. You will then see the option to "Save Attachment". Click on that.
7. Now you can save that smaller photo to the desktop. Make sure it still has .jpg at the end of its file name. It will if you do not change the file name.
8. Now close the email window and select "don't save" when prompted to save the email itself as a draft.

Now that the smaller photo is saved on your desktop, you can follow Steps 1 through 4 in How to attach a photo to your post that I outlined above.

To insert a photo that is on a website or a 'blog, just open that site in a separate window, find the photo and drag and drop it into your Reply posting window here on SG. Highlight the code that appears in your posting box and click on the little picture icon above the box. Finish typing your post. The picture from the website or ‘blog will appear  right within the text of your post (not as an attachment as you did with photos from your Mac desktop or iPhoto) when you hit “Preview” or “Post”.

In the meantime, is there a way to save a specific reply - thinking of #55 unsurprisingly?

I've copied and pasted the content to a doc to save on my hard disk but I wondered if it's possible to download in some format? That would be useful sometimes for any single reply with particularly detailed content.

Marnie, there is a Print tab in the lower right corner of each topic page, but unfortunately it will print the entire topic. Clicking on it does give you a clean view of the topic (no avatars, etc), so you may want to use it for your cut/paste needs.

I've always just used Cut/Paste into a Word document for what I want to save from SG, just as you are doing.

Just checked that out, Kathryn.

It does allow you to 'Print to File' and save it as a pdf as well but then you can't edit out any bits you don't want if it's a long thread. Saving in a word processing programme of some type is usually going to be the best option, I suspect. Thank you.

I don't do this at this time, but thought it was worth mentioning anyway. If you want to save a list of links in a word doc instead of copying all of the actual text over to your document, you can put a link to the specific post that holds the information that you want to link back to. In this case, something like:
Posting Photos on SG (February 19, 2017) (http://artisanssquare.com/sg/index.php?topic=122.msg3552#msg3552)

Title: Re: Sandbox!
Post by: fzxdoc on February 20, 2017, 01:27:11 AM
I've always been gunshy of losing information that's kept online, so I always cut/paste into a Word document. Our recent experience with losing the other SG site (hopefully only temporarily) made me happy that I've always done it that way. Plus I weed out extraneous comments and keep only the meat of the topic when I compile that Word document. But, as with all things on SG, to each her/his own!  :)

Is this photo big and if so how do I make it smaller? Thanks.

Maybe a little too big--You definitely wouldn't want it any larger!

The way to make it smaller is to add a width limitation inside the opening img tag.  Since this is a landscape orientation image, we suggest you use 500 pixels (for a portrait orientation, you'd use 350). What you will add is a space, then "width=500", like this:
Code: [Select]
If I add that to your image, the code looks like this:
Code: [Select]
[img width=500]https://postcardsfromthestillroom.files.wordpress.com/2017/03/img_2933.jpg?w=700&h=&crop=1[/img] which resolves like this:

Notice that if you click on the image, you get the larger version, and click it again to see the smaller.

Give it a try!

Lisa

Etc: spelling ::)

Hi JuneBug!

I went to the page whose url you put between img tags: http://pin.it/z7Oy7Im

and then clicked on the image, which gave me a page which only showed the image: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/d7/da/c7/d7dac7068cc616e83fe4a6cecf7c5b4f.jpg

Then I right clicked on the image and selected "Copy Image Address" in my browser's (Chrome) drop down menu.  Most browser's will have similar options.

Then I came back here and put img tags where I wanted the image (first button in the second row), and then pasted the Image Address between img tags:

Code: [Select]
[img]https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/d7/da/c7/d7dac7068cc616e83fe4a6cecf7c5b4f.jpg[/img]
which resolves as the image we want (when I tried a preview of the post, but too large...so I added a width limitation to the opening img tag.

Since this is a portrait orientation image, I used 350 pixels (if it had been a landscape orientation image, I would have used 500 pixels)  What needs to be added at the end of the opening img tag is a space followed by "width=350"  as follows:

Code: [Select]
as follows:
Code: [Select]
[img width=350]https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/d7/da/c7/d7dac7068cc616e83fe4a6cecf7c5b4f.jpg[/img]which resolves as follows:

Now we'll see if Pinterest will break the link...

Your picture is just fine!

If you're ever wondering, the width should be around 500 pixels for a landscape orientation picture and around 350 pixels for a portrait orientation picture.  For Flickr, that's usually the smallest "medium" size.

Nicely done!

What am I doing wrong?

Perhaps nothing. DL is still troubleshooting this "reloaded" version of SG.  So you will want to report the trouble you had on the Bug Report thread.

But you will need to manage this in the meantime.  My impression is that this happens when (as you said) you've included lots of links and pictures.  So before you post, copy all of the text in your editing box, and save it (in a text program, word processing program, email program.  Just somewhere you can save the text).    Then go back to your post and delete part of it at the bottom (taking away some of the links/pictures) and try again to post.  Keep doing that until it will post.  Then post more of your text in another reply in the same thread.  Repeat as needed.

I know it's a pain, but you should be able to get it all posted that way.  Then be sure to give a link to your post(s) in your report to DL, so that she can see what happened.

I am so sorry thing happened to you...and we really, really, want to see your pictures!

What are you using the "Alt" key for, Lynda? Are you trying to use the shift+alt+s to submit a post instead of simply clicking on the Post button? Or shift+alt+p to preview?

We're here to help!

My 18-year-old cat died yesterday, and I have lost my chain of thought on this subject.  I will get back to this.

Couldn't give up.  Went back and tried multi times.
*I copied the URL.
*The URL disappears before I can insert it.
*Repeat with same results.
*Repeat with same results again.

When I tried the Post button, nothing happened.
When I tried to shift+alt+p to preview, nothing happened.

Is there a list of instructions to do this?  Am I doing this in the wrong order, leaving out some step...

Lynda, I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. It's a sad time for you, I can only imagine.

Regarding using the Alt key, what exactly are you trying to do? Post a photo? If so, follow these instructions if you are using Flickr to store your photos:

If you're trying to accomplish something else, let me know.

Curious... I changed phones this weekend and in trying to login I'm getting error messages and for username it tells me Karen is invalid and autofils my old user (but not screen) name.  Should I be using the "register" function instead of login to get on from a new device?  Thanks!

Karen, the device should not make a difference in your log in details.  Post this over in bug reports and see if DL has an idea.

Hi Lynda!
Both Kathryn and I have given you lists of instructions.  You also posted at the end of the "Photo posting discussion with xchristin" thread.  I posted instructions for you there.  I've now broken out my post there into its own thread titled "Photo posting discussion with Lynda."  Once you've replied here, I'll merge our discussions about photo-posting with you from this thread into that thread.

Choose one set of instructions (either my list or Kathryn's--they both address the same thing) and then tell us which step is the first one that goes wrong...  Let me ask a bunch of questions to try to diagnose what went wrong--we're looking for the first thing that you say "no" to:

1.  Did you click on the picture of your cat? (If you're using my list)
2.  Did that take you to the Flickr page of your cat? (or did you find the page that is just of your image?)
3.  Did you find and click on the curly arrow?
4.  Did you get a pop-up window?
5.  Did you get a blue line under the word "BBCode"?
6.  Did you find the drop down arrow showing sizes?  If so, did you choose a size?
7.  Did you see the text box highlighted in blue?
8.  Were you able to copy the highlighted text? --Note that this is NOT just the image url.  It is also code provided by Flickr that will include a link-back to Flickr, as required by the Flickr user agreement.

Separately, you said you "copied the URL"...what did you do to copy it, and where was your cursor when you copied it.  You don't want the url from your browser's address bar.  You don't want the image url.  You instead want the Flickr-supplied code which includes the image url.  Don't edit the code, just copy all of it.  And then paste it in your reply box.

Don't use any keyboard shortcuts to preview or post.  Just click the button you want under the reply box (either "Preview" or "Post")

You can do this (I'd use three little cheerleader emoticons here!!!)

Hi, I'm jumping in here with the first thing I've sewn for ages. DD2 is graduating in a couple of weeks with a first class honours degree and want a posh frock, so we're making this Vogue/Tom & Linda Platt:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4231/35683670266_ae281882d0.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Wnf8Yf)
Here’s a pic of the fabrics: a navy lace top with a poly satin skirt (we’re using the reverse matt side), and a peach viscose cami under the lace.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4047/35683689716_d679a0d98a.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/WnfeKA)
The lace was from an Etsy seller and the poly satin from one of my fave online fabric stores, clothspot.co.uk.

Hi, act2,

We'll be glad to help, but it looks like you may have deleted your image on imgur (or possibly just made a change after you posted the link), but in any case I'm getting an error message instead of an image when I click on your imgur link.

We'd be glad to help you with either Flickr or Imgur.  Just tell us where you have an image (and go ahead and try to post the image here) and if something doesn't work right, don't make changes or delete it.  Just leave it here, so that we can try to see what went wrong.

Hope to see you here again soon!

Hi JuneBug,

Not sure what you wanted to show here.  So I'm going to show the first floor plan, and make it link back to the page it's on:

(https://www.hamillcreek.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/KootenayLakeFirstFloor.jpg) (https://www.hamillcreek.com/portfolio/kootenay-lake/)

Let me know what you wanted, and we'll do that! ;) ;D  (If it was this, we'll work on directions next...)

Notice that if you click on the image, two things happen.  First, it take you to the page it came from, and second, when you come back to the page showing the post, you'll see the larger version of the plan.  Click again to go back to the source page, and the smaller copy of the plan.

See you soon!

Yay, it worked. Congrats Andrea.

To help others, this is what I recommended to Andrea (copied/pasted from the 18" Dolls topic). She was not able to post more than one Flickr image at a time in her post.  So here was my response:

*********************
Andrea, are you getting the Forbidden error?

Let me try with some of my Flickr photos:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4289/35703665665_9f323dd78b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Wp1BUv)

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4281/35703665615_475b6e477b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Wp1BTD)

I get the forbidden error if I try to post 3 photos if I don't delete the unnecessary stuff from the string of code. Delete everything after the first
Code: [Select]
[/url] in the string. Then your multiple photos should post with no Forbidden errors.

HTH,
Kathryn

Andrea tried it (see previous post) and it now works just fine for her.

Kathryn just helped me with this:

You need to delete everything after the first section that is enclosed and ends with [/url]

You are removing the part that has the name of the photo and name or initials in your case.  Then you can post multiple photos.  It's a bit more than half that gets removed.

In your last photo of the cute dog, it would be the parts that include my dog!! by CH miss, on Flickr
I edited your quote above and you can see the text to the right of the photo is gone.  When that is gone, and the photo shows in preview, you should be set to add multiple photos in the same post.

Does that make sense to you?

Andrea

You're almost there!

When you look at the code from Flicker in your reply window, there are three lines that start
Code: [Select]
[url]You only need the first line, so delete the second two lines. What you're keeping is this format:
Code: [Select]
[url=PAGE URL FOR YOR PHOTO AT FLICKR][img]IMAGE URL FOR YOUR PHOTO[/img][/url]
SG displays what's between the img tags, and the code inside the opening URL tag makes the displayed image a clickable link back to the picture's page on Flickr.

What you're getting rid of is the title you gave the photo at Flickr, which the second line makes into a second clickable link, and a credit line for you ("by CH miss", your username on Flickr, which the code makes into a clickable link back to your user profile on Flickr.

Try deleting the second two lines from each photo's code, and see if you can post a couple pics in the same post!

Lisa

etc: spelling of img tag from "mug" to "img" ::)

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4280/35834136875_e185af5529_n.jpg) Before: rasta dog, usually dirty. loves water.
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4289/35701720341_e0835bf9ac_n.jpg) After: naked dog. Note pom-pom tail.

Sp. Water Dogs are often born with short tails (not cropped!), some have normal tails. If you see a fluffy dog with a funny looking rear end, it's either a Sp. Water Dog or a sheep.

Sp. Water Dogs are an old European herding breed rarely seen outside of Spain. Ours came from a shelter in Mallorca. (long story.) The type is now know because Obama pets are Portuguese Water Dogs. (Obamas copied us...) Portuguese dogs are bigger than the older Spanish breed. Italian version is Lagotto Romagnolo, used to find Truffles (mushrooms). French version is the Barbet and eventually bred into the Poodle. Also a Dutch waterdog that has lots of Collie. Also related to Irish Water Dog. American breed is American Water Spaniel, these last two bred with lots of various Spaniels.

Totally wonderful, very smart, very active dogs. Mega cute, especially ours.  :)

Thank you, bessircrocker, he is beautiful!!!  Our wonderful German Shorthair Pointer, developed liver failure, and then the Vet's treatment finally failed, as there is no cure, we had to put "Hitch" to sleep.  Terribly, heartwretching,  hard, but I refused to let him suffer. Title: Re: Sandbox!
Post by: Lisa on July 11, 2017, 02:34:00 AM
Hi Bessie,

Lovely dog!  You may have wondered why all of the text after your photos is included in the "clickable link." (All of the text after the images is pale blue and if you click, will take you to the first photo's page on Flickr.)

What happened is that you dropped the ending url tag, for the first photo, so SG, not finding one in the remainder of your post, simply treated it as if there ending url tag was at the end of the post! :o ::)

So...when you cut off the second two lines of the code on the first picture, you also got rid of the closing url tag in the first line, which looks like this:
Code: [Select]
[/url]

The format of the first line of each photo should look like this:
Code: [Select]
[url=AAA][img]BBB[/img][/url]
where:
"AAA" = is the destination of the link--where the link will take you when you click on the link
"BBB" = the image's url which SG's software pulls to display the image

The text between the url tags describes the link you see...here, that's the picture (described by the img tags and BBB), which is why the image is "clickable."

So you need to put the closing url tag back where it belongs, at the end of the first line of Flickr-supplied code, which will then look like this:
Code: [Select]
[url=https://flic.kr/p/WAxjs8][img]https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4280/35834136875_e185af5529_n.jpg[/img][/url]
Then your "Before..." text won't be clickable.

Your second photo doesn't include the link back to it's Flickr page, as you've only included the image (but not the linking info).  That is, you only have this portion of the code:
Code: [Select]
[img]BBB[/img]
The first of the three lines of code supplied by Flickr (as viewed in the editing window after you've pasted it) will have this format:
Code: [Select]
[url=AAA][img]BBB[/img][/url]
To add it back separately, add the
Code: [Select]
[/url]at the end of the code for the first picture.

For the second picture, you could copy the Flickr supplied code and delete the second & third lines (just as you did for the first one), OR you could:

1. highlight the entire code string you have now for the second one, then click the 2nd button in the second row to put url tags around your existing code.

2.  then put your cursor behind the letters url in the opening url tag and (with no spaces) add an equal sign, then the page url from that pictures page at Flickr.

That will give you the same thing as getting the Flickr-supplied code and deleting the 2nd  & 3rd lines.

HTH,

Lisa

Nicely done, Theresa!  Flickr's user agreement requires a link-back to Flickr when you show an image direct-linked (aka hot-linked) back to Flickr, so the code they give you supplies it (and makes your picture a clickable link back to Flickr).

Sewing and camping photos

Hi Mfedna!

If you highlight that code string, and then click the first button in the second row over the editing window (looks like a little picture and, if you put your cursor over it will say "insert image"), you'll put img tags around your image's url.  it will look like this:
Code: [Select]
[img]https://photos.smugmug.com/Garments2/i-68NdtHG/0/55f7fd2a/S/image-S.jpg[/img]
Which will resolve like this:

Note that you can get the same thing by starting with clicking the insert image button (1st button, 2nd row) and leaving your cursor between the img tags and then pasting the image url from SmugMug.

Please give it another try!

Just gave it a try myself.  So, here's what I did.

1.  Went to your photo's page in the gallery, "this one (http://artisanssquare.com/sg/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=160)."

2.  Put my cursor on the image and copied the image's url.  (To do that, I right-clicked, which gave me a drop-down menu.  In my browser (Chrome), I chose "copy image address."  You should have a similar choice, even if you don't use Chrome. )

3.  Then I went to the reply window where I wanted the image, and put my cursor where I wanted the image to appear.  Then clicked the "insert image" button above the reply window (1st button in the second row of buttons), which gave you img tags. (When you get the img tags, your cursor will be between them, which is exactly where you want it.)

4.  Without moving my cursor, I pasted the image's url between the img tags.  (On a PC, that will be "Ctrl+V").

That's it.  Hit the preview button to see if you have what you want.

Please give it a try!  ;) ;D

It shouldn't be.  If you have trouble, we can ask Fzxdoc (Kathryn) to help, as she also uses a Mac.   My iPad is on the fritz right now, so I can't try that.

Hi Celia!

Almost...you managed to accidentally delete the opening "[" on the closing img tag.  If I copy your code and add that missing square bracket (just after ".jpeg" and before "/img", the code looks like this:

Code: [Select]
[img]http://artisanssquare.com/sg/gallery/0/176-070917171924.jpeg[/img]

Hi KathyZ!

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4420/36713268520_7534cd467b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/XWe6Eh)

You've almost got it right!  It looks like you've gotten to the pop-up window on Flickr (by clicking on the "Share Photo" outline arrow that curls up and to the right), but you copied the wrong code from there...

Once you have the pop-up window open, you'll see a list of choices:

Share,  Embed, Email & BBCode

Click on "BBCode" which will put the blue arrow under "BBCode."  You'll then have a new drop-down arrow, next to a size choice.  Click the drop-down arrow and choose the size you want.  (Generally, the smallest "medium" is a good choice for Stitcher's Guild.)

Then copy the code from the text window and bring it back here and paste it where you want your picture.

That should do it!

Please give it another try! :)

Just post the code...however if you have trouble, delete the caption & link to your username at Flickr, since those are two additional links.  (To do this:  The code Flickr supplies appears as three sets of links (each starting with a url tag on a separate line).  You need to keep the first link (starts w/ a url tag and ends with a closing /url tag)  Delete the rest.

So.

My iPad is on the "fritz" right now...but let me see if I can help using my iPhone.  Let me ask a couple of questions first:

1.  How are you accessing Flickr?  Via Safari? the official Flickr app?  some other app?

2.  How did you get the url that you were working with before?  (Just describe your procedure, please)

Thanks!

I'm on my iPad now and when I access my Flickr photos using Safari and the Flickr website, the curly arrow appears.

Make sure, KathyZ, that you have tapped on the photo in your Flickr photo stream so that it opens up into a window all by itself. That's when you see the curly arrow.

Kathryn

P.S. I just tried and you can't get the BBcode when tapping the curly arrow using the Flickr app on your iPad.  So you can't use the app for posting photos here.  Instead, you have to go to the Flickr website using your browser.

Hi KathyZ

Then copy the code from the text window and bring it back here and paste it where you want your picture.

Lisa and Kathryn, I've found the BB code in the Share window but the text code is so long that it runs out of sight on the right in the text window. I can't seem to select the whole code to copy. (When I select a part of the code, there is no "select all" option, only "Copy." I can drag the select handle all the way to the left but not to the right. I'm still on my iPad and don't have "home"and "end" keys. MUST I use my desktop?

Thanks for your patience!

Hi Kathy!

Try "double tapping" the code in the text box...even with two fingers!  It's possible to copy all of the text in the text box, but it is a bit "touchy" to do it.

I'm not where I can try it at all, but this is how I've done it in the past...

Let me know how it goes!

Didn't work, Lisa. Double-tapping inserted the blinking cursor into the text but the keyboard didn't pop up. Tapping with 2 fingers just enlarged the whole box.

Hi!
I am a new member trying to figure out how to post pictures.  I am not on flicker yet as I store my pictures on iPhoto and move them around from there as required.  From reading through various threads, I am getting the feeling that you need to have your photos in flicker to be able to post them in posts.  Is this true?  Is there any other way?  Is there a set of instructions posted somewhere for Mac users that I can consult?
Thanks in advance  :)

Hi dagmaro, you can post the photo of that picture from the akulakreative.com website by right-clicking on it (Ctrl-Click on a Mac) and selecting Copy Image Location or Copy Image Address or whatever similar words come up in whichever browser you're using.

So don't use Copy Image. You must use the url of the image itself (the Image Location) to post photos here.

Here's what it should look like:

Code: [Select]
[img]https://static1.squarespace.com/static/56df3a2c59827e60438812ec/t/56eb31b60c4a6893632c63e8/1459376405757/sea-space-color-palette-navy-blue-aqua-yellow.jpg?format=750w[/img]
To get this:

We don't have a FAQ section up yet for this new site. Just go to the Site News and Announcements section and look at topics there.

And as always we're here to help.  :)

Dagmar, as noted in my previous post, (we were both posting at the same time)

Control Click on the image.
For Safari, click on Copy Image Address.
Come back here and paste that address, highlight it, click on the little Image icon
When you then click on either Preview or Post the photo will appear.

I was just looking at what to do with flickr as I did not have an account with them.  I opened one but am still figuring out how to get images from iPhoto into it.  In your view which is the better way to go for Mac users: iPhoto or flickr.

Also I guess I have to figure out how to change the photo size as this image is probably too big.

Thank you Kathryn for your help so far
Title: Re: Sandbox!

Dagmar, you did great! I saw the image in your SWAP topic.

When you ask about iPhoto vs. Flickr, I don't know anyone here who is able to directly import their photos from iCloud which is what you would use, I'm assuming, with your photos stored in iPhoto.

You need to use a photo hosting site like Flickr. It's unfortunate that the photo-posting process here is so demanding and cumbersome, but that's what this software demands. You should be able to drag and drop your photos from iPhoto directly into the Flickr import page.

On your page in Flickr, click on the little cloud with the arrow going through it in the upper right corner.
This will take you to the import page where you can either browse and click on files to upload or drag and drop photos.

So get Flickr figured out and it should be smooth sailing to post photos from there to here. You're almost there, thanks to your intelligence and perseverance. Good for you!  :)

To resize a photo, it's simple. Just insert your cursor just after the first img in
Code: [Select]
[img] and then type a space. Next type width=350 for portrait or width=500 for landscape.

So for your beautiful color story for your SWAP, the image code string goes from

Code: [Select]
[img]https://static1.squarespace.com/static/56df3a2c59827e60438812ec/t/56eb31b60c4a6893632c63e8/1459376405757/sea-space-color-palette-navy-blue-aqua-yellow.jpg?format=750w[/img]
to produce this:

(https://static1.squarespace.com/static/56df3a2c59827e60438812ec/t/56eb31b60c4a6893632c63e8/1459376405757/sea-space-color-palette-navy-blue-aqua-yellow.jpg?format=750w)

to
Code: [Select]
[img width=500]https://static1.squarespace.com/static/56df3a2c59827e60438812ec/t/56eb31b60c4a6893632c63e8/1459376405757/sea-space-color-palette-navy-blue-aqua-yellow.jpg?format=750w[/img]

That worked out with an image I took from my flickr SWAP album.  But I did not click on the picture icon this time which is the difference between this and the first post where I did not get the image.  By not clicking on the picture icon, there was no IMG code.  I will try to import another photo from elsewhere through flickr and see what happens.  Do you not have to adjust size on Flickr pictures.?  This nest picture is imported from my Pinterest SWAP account and is not going through flickr.  on this one I had to click on the picture icon and could adjust the size

ok. so I got that but if you can answer the question re when sizing is required that would be great.  I also need to work on figuring out importing into flickr better and also getting it to be in my browser header the way Pinterest is so I can get to it easily.  Any tips?

Thanks so much Kathryn!  I feel so much further ahead today than I did yesterday!  ;D

Dagmar, with Flickr, you don't need to use the image icon here since the "img" code is already there. For any site besides Flickr, you'll have to use the image icon (the little picture image above) here.

You did just fine with the resizing. Yes, the "width=350" or "width=500" goes inside the first "img" brackets.

Did you notice when you click on the resized image, it returns to its original size, and, for Flickr, also takes you to the Flickr page?
But since you deleted everything in that Flickr string except what's in between the two bracketed "img" codes, then the photo  just toggles between the smaller size and the original size. That's how I like my posted photos to work too. :)

Resizing is not required but it is much appreciated by members who have slower connection speeds. Large photos take a long time to load at those slow speeds. So that's why we like photos smaller than 350 wide for portrait or 500 wide for landscape. My rule of thumb is that if the photo looks too large in the post it probably is.  ;D  So resizing is not mandatory but is a courtesy if you can do it. If not, one of us admins usually resizes very large photos that appear in posts as a courtesy to poster and reader alike.

For Flickr, the "medium" size is closest to the 350/500 goal we like to see here.

Hi Kathryn,
Thanks again for all of your explanations.  That's good information about deleting the long chain of code.  I did notice lots of code on one of my photo posting efforts and was wondering about it.  I am not quite sure how I got rid of it but at least now I know that it is a good idea to get rid of it.  Moreover, I made my Flickr account private as I get nervous about having too much of my life out there (probably a silly worry as I am sure more is "out there" than I am even aware of, but just the same I try to keep my privacy settings quite high).

What is an FTP link (second row, 4th from left icon button)?
Title: Re: Sandbox!
Post by: fzxdoc on November 03, 2017, 04:54:13 AM
Dagmar, the FTP link button stands for File Transfer Protocol and is a way of transferring files from server to server. In the history of Stitcher's Guild, no one has ever used it. :)

Snipping out parts of the BB Code after you have pasted it into your post is easy. Just eliminate everything except what appears between the bracketed "img" codes. That way, anyone clicking on the photo here does not get taken to your Flickr album that has the photo (and perhaps others you may have there) in it.

If you have done the width=350 or =500 modification to the first bracketed "img" then when anyone clicks on the photo in your post, they will see it toggles between the resized photo and the original one here.

HTH,
Kathryn

Here's an example from your Flickr photo that you posted earlier

When I click on the first photo, I get taken to your Flickr album that hosts the photo.

When I click on the second photo, nothing happens because I have taken out all of the information in the BB Code except for the bracketed "img" codes and what is between them.

If I resize the second photo (see below) I can toggle between the two sizes here but am not taken to your Flickr album. Here I did "img width=250" between the first "img" brackets

Click on each of these photos to see what I mean.

Hi Kathryn,
I can't wait for all of my fabrics to arrive so that I can photograph them together in various combinations to try to achieve the same sort of tonal and shade balance that the colour stories have!  That will really help me solidify which item gets made out of which fabric.

On the topic of images, can you tell me how many photos can be inserted into a post?  I read in various places that there seem to be limits but I can't get a fix on the exact number.
Thanks in advance  :)
Title: Re: Sandbox!

Dagmar, there seems to be a roving glitch when it comes to posting photos or links in a single post. For example, in a previous post to you, I got the Forbidden error whenever I tried to post the code for each photo. It's a quirky beast, that glitch.

I can usually get 4 to 6 photos into my posts, but some people seem to have problems with more than 3 or 4. And then there are posts like this one (http://artisanssquare.com/sg/index.php?topic=115.msg25908#msg25908) that has 9 photos in it! Go figure.

So just give it a try and see what happens. Worse comes to worst, you can always post a second post with the remaining photos.

It's annoying, but the host for our site cannot seem to find the problem since it's intermittent.

I'm assuming you want to make what we call a "pretty link", Helen.

Here's how to do it.

1. Type the words that will make your link, like "follow this link" or something like that.
2. Highlight those words and click on the little blue world icon on the left side of the post screen above the emojis.
3. Those words will be encased by the "url" bracketed codes, like
Code: [Select]
[url]follow this link[/url]4. Insert the cursor between the "l" and the end bracket in the first bracketed "url" in that code string.
5. Place an = sign and then paste the website address there.
6. When you hit "Preview" or "Post" you will see your pretty link.

Hi Celia!

Beautiful kitten!

All I've done is added
" width=500" inside the opening img tag.  That means your code will look like this:

Code: [Select]
[img width=500]http://artisanssquare.com/sg/gallery/0/176-131117094914.jpeg[/img]
Notice that there is a space between "img" and "width"...for a landscape oriented photo like yours, 500 pixels is a good size.  If it's in portrait orientation, then the width should be 350 pixels.

Give it a try! :)

Nice job in posting that photo, BeansFads. Gosh, what a beautiful gown.

I don't have a Samsung tablet, but I know that with an iPad, it's virtually impossible to post a photo here because the select function has a hard time capturing the entire BBcode from a photo hosting site such as Flickr.

But you could try it on your Samsung--the process is virtually the same as using a computer--go to the photo hosting site, capture the code, come back here and paste it. If it has no bracketed "img"  code in it, then highlight the code string and click on the little photo icon above the emojis. If it has bracketed "img" codes (such as Flickr's BBcode) then once you've pasted the code here you don't need to do anything else. Just click Preview or Post.

Susan, follow these instructions for getting your photos from Flickr to your post here:

Using a photo-hosting site like Flickr:

1.  Go to Flickr and click on the photo that you want to share here. That opens the photo in its own window

2. In the lower right hand corner, click on the little curvy arrow (the Share This Photo arrow).

3. In the box that opens, select "BB code" on the right side just above the little window that shows the code.

Kathryn

You've almost got it--you're just missing the img tags!

If I highlight your code, then click the "insert image" button above the editing window (looks like a landscape photo.  It's the 1st button in the second row of buttons), it will put img tags around your code like this:

Code: [Select]
[img]http://artisanssquare.com/sg/gallery/0/577-171217031923.jpeg[/img]
which give me this:

which is a very large image, but first things first...as soon as you can display a large image, we can work on reducing the size like this:

Notice that if you click on the smaller image, it will display at the same size as the larger image.  Click on it again, and it's the smaller size...very handy to check details!

Go ahead and add img tags, and we'll be back with the "how to make it smaller details." :)

[Click to see larger image; click again to see this size. :)]

I think I can tell you what happened.  You put your cursor on the thumbnail image in the gallery, and copied the image url (or whatever your browser calls it).  Then brought it here and posted it between img tags.

Your technique was perfect, except you need to open the image in the gallery before your "right click" etc.  Then you'll get the image url for the large image, and can cut down the display image as you describe (I cut the second image down to a width of 350).

If you're happy editing code, I can show you how to get the larger image from the thumbnails code...but I'll do that in a separate post. ;) ;D)

Title: Re: Sandbox!

To get the image url from the thumbnail url in the SG Gallery:

If you look at the code for the two images in the previous post--one from the thumbnail, the other from the image, once you've clicked on the thumbnail and opened the image--you'll see this:

First url below is from the thumbnail image:
Code: [Select]
http://artisanssquare.com/sg/gallery/0/thumb_108-170118203825.jpeg
http://artisanssquare.com/sg/gallery/0/108-170118203825.jpeg

First url above is from the larger/original image:

Notice that the first one includes this additional text:
Code: [Select]
thumb_
which is just after the gallery # and just before the image identifier.  So if you want to avoid the extra step of clicking on the thumbnail to get the image url, you can get the url from the thumbnail, and then remove the "thumb_" from the image url, and you'll have the same code you would have had, had you clicked on the thumbnail, etc.

HTH, :)

Thank you Lisa!

Yep.  There is definitely hope!  When you see that your image is "king kong sized", you just need to add a width "limiter" inside the opening img tag.  So in the large image (of yours) that we've been working with here, the code looks like this:

Code: [Select]
[img]http://artisanssquare.com/sg/gallery/0/108-170118203825.jpeg[/img]
The limiter, which goes right after "img" in the opening img tag, and before the closing bracket (of that opening img tag) looks like this:  " width=xxx"

Be sure to include the space at the front of it, and the "xxx" gets replaced with the number of pixels you want the width to be.  Here at SG, we suggest that for a portrait-orientation image like this one, that the xxx get replaced with 350, while for a landscape-orientation image the width can be specified as 500.

So your code, with the width limiter looks like this:

Code: [Select]
[img width=350]http://artisanssquare.com/sg/gallery/0/108-170118203825.jpeg[/img]
Which displays like this:
[Click to see larger image; click again to see this size. :)]

And that's all there is to it!--although if you want the parenthetical note under the image, you'll have to add it yourself. ;) ;D

Please give it a try here, and if there are any hiccoughs, we can help!

Lisa

Thank you so much, Lisa.  That's all crystal clear.  I hadn't realized the attachments could be size-adjusted in the same way.  I'll go look at that again!

Almost.  What we've been working with here are direct-links to images hosted somewhere on the web.   In this thread, you and I have been working with images hosted in SG's gallery.  You work with those images in the same way you would with images hosted elsewhere on the web.

What you've done in the M7324 thread is attaching the images (using the "Attachments and other options" link under the editing window.  You can tell because all of the images are below a line at the bottom of the post--instead of being placed as you choose in your post...some text before, some after...whatever you like!

Attaching images to a post (instead of direct-linking to images hosted somewhere on the web (including SG's gallery) is very limited.  Those images are likely to get deleted (during a periodic board clean-up).  You can't put them where you like in your post (vis-a-vis the text).  You can't see a preview of them; they're only visible after you post.  And if they're too large when you post them, you have to downsize them on your computer, delete the images you already attached and reattach the downsized images. :P.

I always suggest that it's much easier to work with direct-linked images.  ;) ;D

HTH,

Lisa

Helen, you can click "Attachments and other options" just below the window where you write your post and attach a photo from your computer that way. Just follow the size limitation noted there.

Title: Re: Sandbox!
Post by: fzxdoc on February 08, 2018, 03:51:52 PM
Well, Judith there is pixel size and byte size. As you can see, on the attachments, 3 photos cannot exceed 10.5 MB

For pixel width, 350 pixels for portrait and 500 for landscape.

Play with it and see  how it measures up in size.

Look at the pixel size, Judith, it's still 600x800  and should be below 500 pixel width. So go below 1.0 if you can.

Kathryn

The app I have does size, not pixels. This is the only place where using photos from my iPad or phone is an issue. I don’t have the enthusiasm to go back to find another app. Perhaps someone can recommend   I have no interest in photo hosting site.

It doesn’t matter enough to spend more time on it right now
Title: Re: Sandbox!
Post by: fzxdoc on February 09, 2018, 06:44:51 PM
You can see your pixel size right under the photo you attach (see your post above) You can see that the pixel size is 600x800. So you can edit that post, remove the attachment, and go down to .9 or .8 MB for posting that photo here.

I agree, posting photos on this site is a PITA. But that's what our hosts offer, so there's not much choice but to follow a more convoluted procedure than is available elsewhere. I'd apologize for it, since I'm one of the admins, but I grumble about it too! So much for solidarity with our hosts where photo posting is involved! ;D

You're right, for this photo, 600x800 is not too huge (you're close enough). Keeping the photo width under 500 for landscape and under 350 for portrait seems to work the best. Just remember that large photos take longer to load for our members who have slower internet connections, so it's a courtesy but not a requirement.  :)

Thanks for the help Kathryn. I was able to get it small enough, but of course lose the quilting detail. It’s okay, posting photos not that big a deal for me. My current entertainment is long arm quilting.
Title: Re: Sandbox!
Post by: fzxdoc on February 10, 2018, 01:17:43 PM
Oh, Judith, don't sacrifice too much detail! We'd all love seeing your quilts in as much detail as possible.

When photos are inserted within the body of a post (via a 'blog or photohosting site), we can always click on the smaller image to get to the original larger size.

But that option is not available in the Attachments option of posting photos. Whatever size is there is the only size that can be viewed.

As with everything, use your best judgment. If the larger photo size suits you when attaching photos, especially when you are pointing out detail, then by all means go for it.  :)

And BTW, that quilt is soooo cute, and nicely done!

Best wishes,
Kathryn

Flicker doesn't make it easy but if you go to your photo and choose the little curvy arrow that will say "share photo" if you highlight it ... you need to click on that and then choose embed and you can copy/paste that and find <img srce=xxxx where xxxx is the url for the jpg file.  I noticed the embed also has a dropdown with different sizes so you could probably click the whole tag.  I didn't try it but you can experiment.

So for your first photo you can see this URL:
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4757/39352162425_9961ea1242_z.jpg

Maybe regular Flickr users know a quicker way.  I am not a flicker user so I am not sure.

Hi Mary Ann, Mudcat gave you some excellent advice.

Follow these steps and you'll be posting your Flickr photos here in no time.

1.  Go to Flickr and click on the photo that you want to share here. That opens the photo in its own window

2. In the lower right hand corner, click on the little curvy arrow (the Share This Photo arrow).

3. In the box that opens, select "BB code" on the right side just above the little window that shows the code.

4. Select the photo size you want. "Small" or "Medium" work well here.

Mfedna, your attached photos are fine. When I click on them I can see the original size, a feature that DragonLady enabled yesterday.

You don't need the Shutterfly info in the text of your post if you choose to use Attachments instead. You only need photohosting site info if you want the photo to show up in the body of your post instead of an Attachment, which eventually gets deleted.

And you can rotate that one photo in your iPhone (if that's where it came from) or on your computer and attach it in the correct orientation.

Once you are comfortable attaching photos, the sky's the limit. :)

Another approach to posting your pictures:

Hi Mfedna!

I'm not sure how long an image from Shutterfly will stay, when it's been hotlinked, but I thought I'd try:

(https://uniim-cp.shutterfly.com/procserv?cb=16777215&dsbg=221&f=1&g=2.2&p=1&pa=0.0&ph=65535&sar=1.3333333730697632&sc=0&si=00206835970720180221195627804.JPG&b=1&bw=0.2&cr=0%2C0.05555555555555558%2C1%2C0.9444444444444444&po=0&ps=1&px=350&py=233&r=0&rx=350&ry=233&sa=0)

If you display images this way, you'll be able to show it where ever you like in your post, so that you can have text both before and after the image (however you want it!).   Here's what I did:

1.  Went to the page for the image, using the link in your last post.  I did that in a separate tab or window in my browser.

2.  Then I put my cursor on the image and "right-clicked."  That got me a drop down menu, from which I chose "copy image address" (That's the Chrome version of this entry, but other browsers will have a similar item.  "Copy image url"   Use the version from your browser--let us know which browser you're using if you have trouble identifying what your browser calls it.).

3.  Once you've copied the image's url (step #2), then come back here to your open editing window and put your cursor where you want the picture in your post.

4. Click the "insert image" button above the editing window (1st button in the second row--looks like a landscape picture), which will put url tags in your post--your cursor will be between them.

5.  Leave the cursor between the opening and closing url tags, and paste the code you copied in step #2.

6.  Preview your post to make sure it's the way you want it, then click the "Post" button.

Give it a try! :smiles-pom2: :smiles-pom2: :smiles-pom2:

Thank you fzxdoc and Lisa - you can probably tell by now that I do not have these kinds of thinking skills....I will need to use another computer (vs iPad) and print out the directions you provide because my Brain acts like it's "under arrest" and unable to manage. Stay tuned. I shall try once more when I have a computer print out. (Is there a class I can take in this kind of thing? Seriously, what is this kind of learning called for those of us who do not have a programming mind?)

Mfedna,

I'm absolutely convinced that you can do this!  People who can sew (like you) can also post pictures.  It's just a different kind of assembly.  You can assemble fabric and thread into clothing following a pattern--you have the kind of brain (and thinking skills) that will be able to post pictures too!  You're just assembling code, following a pattern (our instructions) which will allow you to create the code structure you need to allow Stitcher's Guild to display your pictures.

You can do this! :smiles-pom2: :smiles-pom2: :smiles-pom2:  Please give it another try!

If you have any trouble, just be sure to leave what didn't work here, so that we can diagnose what went wrong.

Looking forward to seeing more of your pictures soon! ;) ;D

TRy #1: I took this image from my iPad library...using the attachment as you see.

Then, try #2:

I used the directions you generously and painstakingly provided in my next attempt...with a shutterfly  photo, a completely different one. BUt, I don't know "how to right click" with the iPad.  I tried copying that one also, but it did not carry over to "paste".

Thank you for the confidence boost.

I guess I am limited to only sending photos on my iPad...that I take with my iPad, and which can be sent as attachments right now. I will keep trying. I think the iPad isn't really helpful always. This has been good. Next I try with the computer using your directions.

Thank you so much.  This is a photo of a muslin that remains a muslin.

Saashka, no I didn't. I assumed it wouldn't work on an ipad. But I will now!

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/qH0RwcUh_pYNnrskaI6ur1KVUCgg2l7CGxS49S9zyspBfp8IBD5Q9MrcefelAalRgpLbnmXFNLl_vJ-F-iF6y5tOKCCTWh99zAtkZBc1zei8V35oI1klOgPxLceX8ycH8djQ6O6cnhHWZKtMqjnHgEFDPneUjcSOo9nPLSi4W20UhQ32UIOZ8ovEaO-5oNLlGqjYsSaHj7K_gyFIA0wxhj8hiCK7jvf8YubxWWUoCcb-v1QrQoD6d462lTtUpvhAB3AWQP-6UoFr6k0FBO2I9D3eX03R2Oz49TyknWCP5ikBAcUMwu2XgcLQUklBriPhJTzwgV2kPpFP_6GbnuVCW5oEWn-83hNEmOvR2J1ztyG_PKRoZX4QaRX4mJ8sV54bAWKuztVJkB1_kyqutg7o3D1EzbN6BRwZIMo0E1zOaLgjyvRxkUvwdZhd16ZiIX76g-qTCxEk284rDwkV0r8WYNDlAHWvKpnp2c9rQSIdYJf95Eu4OKvdQ-L111U9TQs_WW4ZbPtF1IyJZIXHCu5B74zfC-I2Ujz0cHMijdHhTTgUyKGXhtNEjfOUBSffyknoh6PhSFnTf7h1W3jZNk41iTA6KdQwUnOmwzWgpWTmaT7eJgF5iyG8B4BFg53Qpi9g_hJVzopPsJDL8FmqzpSuLda82-M5DEQs=w820-h834-no)

Not sure how long it will last (google images are sometimes temporary, but the only way to see if that's true of this method is to try it out...).

Here's what I did:

1.  When on the page your link took me to, I clicked on the image, which got me a larger version of the image.

2.  Right-click on the larger version of the image, and choose "copy image address" (if you're using Chrome) or whatever the equivalent is for your browser.

3.  Then come back to your post and put your cursor where you want the image, the click the "insert image" button (second row, first button above the editing/reply window).  This will leave your cursor between the img tags.  Leave it there, then copy the image address you got from Google Photos (Ctrl+V).  Note that this is a very, very, long image url.  Don't try to shorten it!

4.  Before you preview your reply to check the image, give yourself a little bit of insurance, so that you don't lose your reply.  Copy the entire reply (Ctrl+C) so that you don't lose your post when you preview the reply...if you do, you'll just paste the entire thing back in your reply window.

5.  Then click the "preview" window and check the size of your image.  My copy of your image was way, way too large.  So I needed to reduce the size.  If yours is ok as is, then you can click "post" (assuming your post is complete).

If you need to reduce the size of your image (like I did) here's what you do:

6.  Go to the opening img tag just before the code you copied from Google Plus.  It looks like this:
Code: [Select]
7.  Put your cursor between the "g" and the "]", then add a space, the word "width" and then the "=" sign and the size you want for your image, in pixels.  For SG, you'll want 500 pixels if your image is in landscape orientation and 350 pixels if your image in is portrait orientation.  For your square image, I used 500...use what you like, but nothing larger, please.

This code looks like this inside the opening img tag:
Code: [Select]
Give it a try! :smiles-pom2: :smiles-pom2: :smiles-pom2: (and we'll both find out in a couple of days if your image will stay!)

HTH,

Lisa

The only problem with the Attachment option for photos is that the size that is uploaded matters. For example, Teresa, when I click on your attached photo to see it better, it goes to the huge file 1.01MB that you uploaded. We can't resize or move that huge photo around to see it better. So try to upload a medium sized photo (say in the 200 kB range rather than the 1 or 2MB size)

For example, this photo is 135 kB and when you click on it you can see the detail better without blowing it up to a size that can't be discernable.

Another limitation with using the Attachments option for photos is that you can only upload one three photos per post.

Let me try to change that to three. If you have more photos than that, a single word post -"cont'd" or "more" will allow you to upload three more.

It's already set to allow 3.

When I navigate to a photo, the link to add another appears under the field for the first.  Is this not happening for everyone?

After I posted I saw that may photo was huge but opted not to change it then because my sewing machine was crying for attention. What’s a girl to do in that case?

I think if we were to talk more of size choices instead of or along with, file size (I know it does matter at times) then it might be easier for those of us that really don’t get all the geek speak. Maybe that’s been addressed in this thread IDK.
Most photo editing software gives you dimension choices and file size but dimension is the easiest to understand - think picture frame.

A good finish size would be like 800x800 or something? I would have to test it on my big computer :)

I just think it’s so cool that we can upload directly to the forum. I’m ok with limits. Just having this feature is AWESOME!!

 Ok back to picture testing.....

 Ok back to picture testing.....

Just to let you know...three more limitations when you upload directly to the forum (using the "Attachments and other options" link under the editing/reply window):

1.  All of your images will be included under a line that is under all of the text in your post.  You can't place the images where you want them in the midst of your text.

2.  When the site is being cleaned up, attachments are deleted.  We used to say that was done every 30 days, but I don't know the current schedule.  Note that the "30-day clean-up" wasn't 30 days after you post.  It's just every 30 days, and might be only minutes after you post! :o

3.  If you're trying to get advice on something in a photo, attaching it means it's not available for viewing while other members are trying to post a reply to you.  You can see what I mean by that if you click "reply" and the scroll down below.  You won't see any of the attached images there...and in fact you won't see any until the one I "hot linked" from your photo hosting site.

That said, an image (however posted) is always better than no image.  I'd just encourage you to hot link when you can!

HTH,

Lisa

I don't have a schedule to do it on now.  I figure if the directory starts getting full, I'll issue a warning a few days before I clean it out the first time, then use that date as a first benchmark for how often it will need to be done thereafter.

In regards to your size question Lisa posted this earlier

Nothing over 500 please she says. If you do learn how to embed your photos you can follow Lisa's excellent instructions to size them down. If we click on them we get to see the bigger version.

I have this theory that the majority of people with fancy cameras phones or cameras who aren't techy or used to Geek Speak as you put it have their cameras set for a much higher resolution and therefore file size then they need for any use they have of the photos. Most of us are not having posters or murals done of our garments, so it can be a bit of overkill.

My Sister in law used to email me attached photos of my 2 year old niece that were so big that when opened all I saw was one nostril. I kid not. It became a bit of a joke and I would need to put them in my photo editing program and make them much smaller to see what the rest of the kid looked like. Turns out SIL didn't even know she could change those settings.

I agree about the size of pictures on tablets, phones and cameras. I remembered that my camera 8 years old (antiquated you may say!!) allows you to resize on the camera and makes a copy of the original which isn't altered in any way. It comes in the editing section so maybe others have the option. Phones and tablets I don't know how to resize but their pictures are far too big!

Thanks Gardengirl for pointing that out.. I did see that in Lisa’s post.

What I should have said is, a good picture size to start with before adding the width tag to the image if that makes sense.

Helen one thing that I figured out when I try to post from my phone or iPad (kind of a pain) is to email the pic to myself and letting the email program give me the choice of file size to send. My MSN & Gmail offers that up when attaching pics :)

Lisa, are the pics that you posted from my link of still showing up or have the disappeared?
Title: Re: Sandbox!
Post by: fzxdoc on June 14, 2018, 04:35:16 PM
Teresa, when I email photos to myself, I select the Medium size when given that option on my iPhone before the image is mailed. That's the size that works best here.

800x800 is too large. It should be 350xwhatever (assuming the aspect code is locked) for portrait photos (longer than wide) and 500xwhatever for landscape photos (wider than long).

And the photos on your drafting your own pattern topic that I fixed for you are still up.

The one that Lisa fixed here in the Sandbox a couple of days ago is still up as well. :)

HTH,
Kathryn

I am trying to figure out how to link to a particular page (for example on my blog) without all the words for the link being displayed.  But I don't know how to keep the link but change the name of it...

For example:
https://spoolsandyards.wordpress.com/2018/07/09/vogue-1033-stylearc-mashup/ (https://spoolsandyards.wordpress.com/2018/07/09/vogue-1033-stylearc-mashup/)

How do I change the title of the link to just say 'blog'.  I am sure it is simple but I am not seeing how to do it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

When you use the buttons here on the edit window, you put the URL behind the "equals" sign.  Then, you can put whatever text you like between the brackets:

Code: [Select]
[url]any text you like[/url]
So, your example would look like:

Code: [Select]
[url=https://spoolsandyards.wordpress.com/2018/07/09/vogue-1033-stylearc-mashup/]Your text here[/url]
Then, your text will have the link embedded in it, so clicking the words will open the page.

If you want to change the size of your image, one way that I have used, to make it smaller, is to add a modification to the code.  Just after and inside the first [ img ], you add in how wide you want it to be, by adding "width=number".... I usually experiment by putting different numbers there until I get the image the size I want it to be, for me it is ususally about [ img width=300 ]

Good job, kushami. The attachment seems to work fine for you. I'm not sure that the google links you used in the first try were from photohosting sites, the type which allows for the sharing of images.

Once you post the attachment, clicking on it will result in a viewable size. At least that's what is happening when I click on your attachment.

kushami, when I click the thumbnail I have to scroll back and forth to see the whole pic. I see the pic size is 2767x1894. That's pretty big.
To resize I either put it in Photoshop and size to 500 by 500 or there abouts, or email it to myself if I'm uploading from the phone and let the email program resize.

Hope this helps :)

Came back to add. Microsoft Office Picture Manager has a resize tool as well.

Yay! You did it, DebbyA!

The size sticky works only for photos embedded in a post, not for an Attachment.

You did both perfectly. Congrats!

Kathryn

P.S. I'm surprised your attachment doesn't get larger when I click on it like kushami's (the immediately previous tester) did.  ETA: it does, it just takes a minute to redisplay.

hey, I think I finally have an avatar!! the prime reason you have children is so they can work all your electronic objects when you can't.  now that I know how to do this, I might even figure out how to change it...

could we sticky the "adding an avatar" instructions here, too.?

I wrote up a sticky for you (and others), bessiecrocker.  It's in the Forum Help Topics area here:

How to Place an Avatar (a Photo of Yourself or Something Else) into Your Profile (http://artisanssquare.com/sg/index.php/topic,1779.0.html)

Best wishes,
Kathryn

this is a test of my inspiration photo for SWAP 2019. And my inspiration fabric from my fabric closet.

I attached them using the option but. . . I don't see where I can click Open. And when I preview I don't see the photos.

Oh behalf of Sandbox, Luz Clara, you're welcome.  :D

You'll not see photos using the Attachments option when you Preview your post; it only appears after your click "Post".

Gorgeous photos BTW. You are going to rock that palette.

If you want the link to appear separately, the easy way is to put below your text or other info, between the code buttons (the pound sign), so others can copy and paste:

Code: [Select]

Patti, many areas of the forum require a subscription to post.  You can find the details for purchasing one here:   http://artisanssquare.com/sg/index.php/topic,1336.0.html
