Great things to see and drool over here!  Lots of great creativity too.

Kathryn, as one who can't bear to make anything twice I really admire your patience as you make your trial garments - they're much too nice to be called 'muslins'...
Love the idea of the magnetic closures too, and the way you handled their attachment.  You have one lucky daughter.

Super potholder, Ann!  I will have to look into making some myself.  Ours always seem to get too close to the woodstove.  Wink

Katherine, that is the most gorgeous jacket!

Really beautiful combination of fabrics, Kathryn.  And I bet it is completely yummy to wear.  Thanks for posting your tips on the magnetic closures and how you used them - very interesting.

I.... While I was home I worked on potholders for our house. ...

I love the shape of this potholder.  I like the glove shapped pot holders but they are difficult to sew and turn.  DH prefer's my potholders to purchased potholders because I use an extra layer of batting.  I printed the picture so the next time I make potholders I can copy your idea!  thanks for sharing

Ann, what a cute potholder! I may have to steal borrow that design. I have a collection of truly awful potholders.

Kathryn, what everyone else said! What a lucky DD you have! I love your detailed blog posting and realized several things -- one, there is hardly any silk lurking in my stash; two, if there were, the pieces would not coordinate; three, your patience is amazing (two muslins!). I have some other magnets waiting for a project but it hasn't identified itself as yet.

When I locate my scanner, I will scan the pattern and put it on my website either as a jpg or pdf file. It is one I traced from a potholder I saw at the Hutterite Colony I work at.

The 2nd potholder has the binding on it and both are ready to handsew. I am really short of time with things happening at school that are out of my control. I am having to do so much in my own time that I am working almost 12 hours a day for the school district. Hopefully that will stop soon.

Bags, and potholders, and jackets, oh my!  Such wonderful treats for the eyes.  Kathryn, your jacket is gorgeous and I love seeing the iterations as you progressed.  Still to scattered here for much comment, but you all make me smile.

That potholder is beautifully done Ann, perfect round, and (if so inclined) would make a lovely gift with a matching casserole holder.
Love the jacket/fabric Kathryn... I always forget about these magnet closures until someone uses them, wish the idea would come to me earlier.  Hope your DD likes it!  I love seeing things, i.e. a casual outerwear type jacket, in unexpected fabrics such as the flannel or dupioni. We are so unlimited in how we can alter a garment from its originally perceived use/idea!

Here... if I post correctly... are a couple pieces I made last week, both from SIlhouette patterns, Sheila's jacket using sweater knit I found while tub trolling the stash, and Valerie's top lengthened, lowered, with matching lace made on embroidery machine.  And another brocade/suede apron for another friend.

Very nice outfit Karen. It looks good on you.

The potholders are egg shaped. It is amazing how you linked the two together. It was intentional though I am making these to see if DH likes them. If he does, I will make several sets for our house and stash these with the casserole carrier.

Karen, I posted on another topic, but it bears repeating--great outfit! And how exciting to have found the fabrics while you were on another mission in your garage. Those fabric tubs must have been singing a siren song indeed! Smiley Isn't it great to know that you have an in-home mini-fabric shop at your disposal?  Smiley

Thank you so much, Mardel, PattiB, Leslie (Lessalt), Karen, Marcia, Shams, Lyra, Martha, KathrynT, AnnRowley, and Ann for the encouraging compliments on the blue/violet iridescent lined silk jacket.  I keep gazing at it on the dressform, and quite honestly am reluctant to pack it up and mail it off to DD.  I want to keep it!  Grin   But off it will go, despite my jacket lust, by the end of the week. It's such a quick-to-make project (once the size is determined), that there's really no reason why I couldn't whip out a version for myself too.

Hi Kathryn
I love all the things you make and I loved that jacket.  Found the Burda magazine with the pattern in this morning and believe it or not I had actually marked that one as one I would like to do.  Might give it a try.  I made a Burda jacket from 4/2008 pttn 120 and after doing a muslin it turned out perfect.  I was rapt.  I will have to do a photo one day.  I had to borrow a pattern sheet from somebody else because my pattern sheet was split and wouldn't join up.

Thank you so much for the generous compliment, Lynda. Please let us know how you like the 11/2007 #126 jacket when you make it. I think you will enjoy having it in your wardrobe.

I looked up pattern #120 from 4/2008. It's the cover jacket, correct?

Wow, I would love to see photos of your completed jacket. That is one great design. What fabric did you make it out of?

Hi Kathryn
That is the jacket, I made it in a denim sort of material with a slight stretch, I can't think what they call it.  The pattern turned out great with an increase in the front, it was size 44, perfect for the back.  One thing I loved about it is that being short - 5ft 1" and cuddly with a tummy the front points covered up the tummy quite well.  I will get Dh to take and photo and then try and post it.

I am sporting a cold today and am not feeling my best. But I did make it to Beaverlodge to begin a wall hanging double wedding ring quilt in the hoop project. We got 2 blocks and two outer pieces done. Debate was on whether to handsew the backing strips down vs sewing them down with invisible thread in the bobbin. I am handing sewing mine down. I have a lot of work to do on this before it is posted.

I got the binding hand sewn down on the two potholders. I am happy with them and hope DH will also like this style. Then I can make them to go with aprons. I do have one more style to try out on him - they are heart shaped and I like them as well.

Hi
Kathryn I like that jacket picture that you posted for Lynda - Lynda I will be interested in hearing how it goes.  I have fallen in love with Burda patterns - I take them out of the packet or trace off from the sheet take a 1/4 inch tuck in the bodice for a petite adjustment above the bust and then make them up.  They just fit here is a muslin I made for my 6pac dress it is from an old Burda 7/2000 137 a wrap over dress plus size 44-52. I made a 48 as per instructions no petite adjustment but I might add this to true one as I do not like where the bust darts fall.  When I saw this I thought of Shams as it has a certain style that is reminiscent of her.

Here is the Burda drawing of the dress
I did not add the pockets either didn't think I needed the extra bulk around the hips! It says to add velcro to hold the fronts at the back but this is useless if you try to move or bend down - I am going to modify and add a button or ties.

Jacs, that looks like a cool dress to wear in the summer.

I took an embroidery class yesterday on quilting in the hoop. I just loved the pattern - Double Wedding Ring. When we got done what we were suppose to do for the day, non of our block designs would line up. I don't know what happened but it certainly was frustrating. I am going onto Yahoo to find out and will make it again but just 4 blocks and 4 scallops to put on the table. So I have enough fabric cut to make a 24 block sand 12 block of scallops. I am taking lemons and making lemonade out of it. I will get another pattern and do it. I have it picked out and just need to buy it.

Picture of the block.

I also got 2 custom ordered western shirts done and the pictures are included. These are our basic shirts, which this customer loves. She chooses very interesting fabric for her shirts. Need to cut out a couple more today - it is snowing out and a good day to do this after I get my groceries bought.

And the 2nd shirt. I particulary like this fabric. It reminds me of dahlias or dandelions. If it was me finishing it up, each flower center would have some orange crystals in it. but not what this lady wants. Simple for her.

...Simple for her.

That made me laugh because those bold flowers are simple but somehow not what I associate with the word.

I don't know anything about western wear so please excuse my ignorance in this question. I'm surpised by how short the body is relative to the arm length and shoulder width. Is there a reason for this?

Hey Jacs, that dress is great and I love it!

Yes, as soon as my eyes fell on the technical drawing (even before I read a word) I recognized it as a Miyake-inspired design.  Vogue had a version of it as well, which must be out of print, because I just went looking for it to link to it and I couldn't find it.

Since I don't really wear dresses, I have never made that style, but I like it.

Cute shirts!  I love the black/white one (is there a garment or fabric out there black/white I don't love???  Roll Eyes).  My first thought was fireworks.
I'd forgotten about that wrap style dress, wonder if it's in one of the stored boxes... a little longer than I'd wear now but would be a cute quick swimsuit cover shorter. THanks for the reminder!

Jacs, outstanding dress and cute little shrug. I also like that pattern.

Beautiful white blouse, also. I didn't scroll back to see who posted it, but I will. I love a beautiful, fresh white blouse!

I love the shirts.  Tell us again where you find the fabric.  Are the all 100% cottons?  Are they quilting cottons?

Thanks for the compliments on the shirts.

Myrna, the body is short as I pinned 6" of it up. We make our shirts with longer bodies so the girls can tuck them in and they don't come out when they are riding. This was a request from our cowgirls when we first started making shirts. That and a longer long sleeve.

Bev, the girl bought the fabric at Around the Block in Beaverlodge Alberta, Canada. There isn't any left and they won't replace it. I thought it was a Hoffman but I can't find it on the web page. I am pretty sure the green is also a Hoffman fabric as this quilt shop buys lots of Hoffman fabrics. All of our shirts are cotton though some have polyester in them (for what ever reason some of the girls like broadcloth). I like sewing with 100% cotton though I do get my arm twisted to work with other fabrics.

Ann

A shot of the fabric on the floor prior to cutting it.
