That is gorgeous, Liana. Emmaonesock has
some
as well. I still haven't made up the one I purchased last year (or was it the year before that
).

Wow, there are lots of them out there, aren't there?
Surfer, I tried your method, and found
this one,
which I like best of all, probably both because it's pink, and because it's not the usual thing, which also makes me wonder if it's 'the real thing.'

Oh yes, definitely that too!
I mainly figured it wasn't the real thing though because it appeals to me, and the real ones never do.
Lack of taste, apparently.

NY Fashion Fabrics has quite a few:

The price is quite reasonable, so does that mean it can't be the "real thing"? How much should Missoni fabric cost?

I'm seeing much more Missoni fabric available these days for quite a variety of prices. Maybe they are exploring a new niche?

So for those of us that are uninformed, ignorant, naive or just plain dumb... what makes a Missoni a Missoni?

You know. I was thinking the same thing. Has the Missoni name become the definition for its wave pattern, or does it mean the fabric was made for or by Missoni. For it to be "real" I would say the latter, which does not limit it to the wave.

When I think of Missoni, I think the wave. But I've seen waves at low prices and I've seen waves with high prices. When I think of Puci I think of (I'm sure there is a better way to describe it) bright, large swirling graphics. but I recently saw a vintage silk piece in a solid with colored zigzags near the hem. This was a Puci. So there goes my idea of Puci.....

Even though Missoni is often generically used for flame stitch knits Missoni makes other fabrics as well. A search for "Missoni shirt" at
TheFind
turns up a few things that are different from than the flame stitch pattern. Also, I couldn't find any currently for sale but I know I've even seen Missoni woven floral shirt weight cotton in the past.

I have some Missoni fabric that has "Missoni" stamped in the selvedge. It is not a flame or wave stitch design, but I think it is easily recognizable as Missoni. The design is such that you would want to play with the fabric layout. I suspect that lots of these fabrics we are seeing is not truly from the Missoni we all think, but rather a way of marketing a knock-off fabric design. Did you notice the silk georgette Missoni is priced at 1/4 meter in, I believe, Aussie dollars? That would make that fabric about $68Australian/meter. Not sure what the exchange rate is these days. I tend to think the higher price goods are the real thing- but maybe-maybe not! High price does not always equate with quality.

nyfashioncenterfabrics says of the $15/yd pink flame pattern, "This high-end textile, made famous by the Italian Missoni family, is made on special knitting machines and designed by the Missonis themselves." Similar but not identical text is used for the other patterns. All these fabrics are half poly/half cotton. I dunno. emmaonesock's Missonis are 80% wool, 20% acrylic, and are priced at $40/yd.
