At the moment I am up to my neck in Novi. The show has grown and has many new venders, and lots things to do for the gals attending. Will be packing tonight and off tomorrow...we have been up so early and the show has gone into the evening hours...that leaves dinner and bed...just about anything to get off the feet. Standing on cement for about 12 hours a day...hmmm...

Yes there is a new pattern and I have about 50 here that the printer over-nighted to me. I hope 'webboy' can get the info up on the website before I leave for St Louis on Thursday...but I have to pack the boxes for Grand Rapids this week...that is where I will be the week after next. I know their 'Sit and Sew' is filled, but they are using a 350 person location for the all day lecture there is room there.

Well, my turn in the bathroom...more later. louise

Hey, Louise: I hear they're going to switch the dates of the Chantilly, Va. Expo so it doesn't overlap with Novi next year. Hope you're able to make it. We really missed you this year. You vendors all work so hard and bring such quality to these Expos, it makes it worth attending.

I spent Friday and Sunday at the Novi expo. I had such a great time. Thanks to Louise for being so warm and friendly. I purchased the One Seam Pant pattern, and have just the fabric(s) for it, and can't wait to make them up. I must report also that I so enjoyed looking at all the wonderful samples that Louise had on display. A truly talented lady!  Smiley Oh yeah! Almost forgot! I got a peek at her new pattern! It's really cool!  Wink

Hello Sewsy. You can't post that you took a peek at the new pattern without giving us a hint, that could be considered teasing and cruel  Grin. Glad you had a good time at Novi. I am looking forward to Puyallup 2008, if my new knee will allow it. Bye for now. Jackie B

Oh, I went on a splurge tonight!  Despite having a HUGE queue of cut-and-ready-to-sew items, I found myself home alone for an entire evening...and I pulled out my traced and ready ABO jacket pattern, threw a piece of large-houndstooth cottony upholstery fabric on the table, and set about making it.

I'd've probably finished if it I hadn't taken so long trying to line up the houndstooth and doing a bunch of extra topstitching to make sure my fabric didn't ravel out of the seams (it's EXTREMELY shreddy).  As it is, I'm done to the hem/final topstitching/buttonholes and buttons (I found some cool wooden buttons in my grandmother's box to use).

I'm *really* going to like this jacket.  The fabric is really soft and warm, and, wow, big houndstooth!  I'm pinching myself...I'm so rarely on trend!

I'll post a photo when it's finished.

Lisa,  I'm anxious to see how the ABO turns out for you!  I need to get out my pattern and get out that beautiful fabric that I purchased from Louise at the last expo and get mine made.  The colors of the fabric would be soooo right for this time of year!  I'm like you - I have too many projects on my plate!  We're in the middle of a family room update and I have some home dec things to sew - such mindless sewing!!

This is a piece I found on the upholstery remnant fabric table at Hancock's back in May.  I just liked it...I didn't realize houndstooth was going to be such a fashion item this fall.

I barely had enough, though...I had to piece the collar.  Shocked

Lisa and all,  Is this weave considered houndstooth?   I have 2 yds of this lustrous, drapey Donna Karan wool.

Houndstooth is like a dogs tooth....kind of zigzaggy .....like the jacket on the cover of the current Vogue Pattern magazine.

I should be at the sewing machine finishing a BPD (By Popular Demand) top to match the olive one seams for fall/winter...better go sew now.....Sewingbeth

Nice fabric. I'd call it a tartan plaid.

Usually a houndstooth is a 2 color weave that's consistent across the length and width of the fabric. Sorry I can't post a representative picture just at the moment.

Thank you both.   I thought it would work for a simple jacket like the ABO shape because of it's simple 2-color weave and no complex "plaid" to match.

This is a Hunting Stewart tartan plaid wool from the Kilmahog woollen mill in Scotland with many colors and a more complex plaid weave.    Not sure what to do with that.   It's a heavy wool that is used for kilts.   A friend brought me this and a piece of Harris tweed a few years ago when he was there on business.   I have over 4 yd of the tartan.

Here's  Wikipedia on houndstooth and houndstooth's origin.  Interesting.

Wow, that's beautiful stuff, but you're right. The scale and complexity of the weave could be daunting to work with.

Terri:
I LOVE your Scottish plaid.. I'm envisioning making a very simple swing jacket, dolman sleeves, cut on the bias, with a straight collarband down the front. What do you think?? would you consider selling the fabric? Just hope it isn't too heavy..
( I assume the width is something like 56 or 60", right?) Here is the style I am thinking of:

Terri,  that IS a gorgeous plaid!  At least it is a balanced and even plaid!  You just may need the full 4 yards trying to match it up.  The repeat  looks to be probably 8 - 10, maybe 12 inches!   That will eat up yardage fast!  I've worked with  plaids quite a bit and think it is fun to match it all up!  I usually end up cutting one layer at a time! faintthud

My absolute favorite plaid is blackwatch!  I used to have a pair of wool pants made from it and wore them with a navy blazer - but that was many moons (and pounds) ago!

Terri K -  ITA, that's a plaid.   Your question Houndstooth?  gave me pause, because I used to know the difference a looong time ago but since neither has been part of the fashion world in ages, I had go Google it!   (oh, that old age and related disorders....)

http://www.ohalloranco.com/designer-houndstooth-herringbone-coat.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houndstooth

both have illustrations.    Hope this helps......it sure got me sorted out.   LOL

Thanks all,  I also went to the wikipedia site and saw that variation that gave me pause, but who cares, as long as the end result looks good!

I bought the red/black wool from Fabrics Unlimited in Arlington VA for a wrap skirt when Donna Karan was doing those really simple wrap skirts that had a fringed edge, you pulled the top fringed edge through a loop & then a piece of elastic stretched at the back.   Fabrics Unlimited was always coming up with instructions for fun knock-offs with their fabrics and I still think I have the instructions somewhere  Roll Eyes  I don't know if any of you remember them on Columbia Pike.   They always carried the best fabrics from the European mills and the Swiss and Austrian cottons were TDF.   I remember that they were also the first local store that I shopped to carry Louise's patterns.

I'm here and as soon as I get Grand Rapids boxed and ready for UPS, I will be back to see all what you have been up to. I pull out tomorrow for St Louis to teach for the weekend and Grand Rapids next weekend. I have been in the garage all morning pulling the NEW PATTERN out of the cardboard boxes and putting them in air tight plastic bins. Not sure if webboy can get the new pattern up on the web  site today...does anyone know how to show the pattern here if it has not been on the internet...I have a scan of the cover illustration. Let me know, but I'm off to the garage again...ugh! later Louise

TA DA -   Here is the NEW pattern illustration front cover and back.   I told Louise to e-mail them and I uploaded the .jpg files to flickr.

I love this - just the thing I was looking for to copy this $1,390 Eskandar short "swing" jacket from the NM fall 07 catalog   Described as cream baby camel hair.

Terri, that Eskandar outfit is absolutely wonderful - and Louise's new pattern and the one seams will make it happen!

Louise, thanks for the info about applying bias bindings to the neck edge. Guess what!? I turned on the local PBS station the very next day and who should be on America Sews with Sue Hausemann?!!!  So, I got to see exactly what you were describing to me the day before. Which leads to my question.... have you considered doing DVD's of your techniques? I'm positive that they would be very well recieved. I for one would love having a video collection of your teachings.

Also, ladies, I just about didn't post about the new pattern, simply because I didn't think it was my place to announce anything about it; that was for the designer of the pattern to do. Anyway, it is great. I am extremely impressed with Louise Cutting. She is an extremely talented individual, and very gracious besides.

The ABO is done!
Photos on Sew Random.
I really, really like this jacket.  That fabric is probably closer to chenille than anything; the yarns are tufty, but they're so tightly confined w/the very fine lengthwise (warp?) threads that you can't tell.  Anyway, the fabric is soft and very warm.

The only thing that might bug me is the shoulder portion of the armsceyes; it's stiff because I serged the seam allowances together, pressed them towards the sleeve and topstitched them.  I did it because the fabric is so incredibly ravelly, but it made that seam stiff.  It probably would have been better to have serged them separately, pressed the seam open, and topstitched both sides, which is what I did on the CB seam.

Anyway, I knew I wanted a short, boxy jacket for that fabric; I'm glad I settled on this one!

Lisa, you're one of the first I've seen to finish a houndstooth garment that is so hot this season.  Good for you!  It's nice to hear that you are so in love with that ABO design.  Louise's patterns are real crowd pleasers, for sure.  Enjoy wearing your au courant jacket!  Smiley
