Thanks, everyone!  Beebee, the sleeves are three quarter as I planned to wear it over a long sleeved tee and wanted another (more subtle) color peeking out wherever possible.  Last night, I wore it over a dark blue turtleneck and DH said I looked like the Swedish lady (Mrs. Anderson?) who used to sell coffee on TV.  Wink  The Swedish in me had a different image in mind.  Oh, well.

Martha, the new top looks great.  I love the color, and encourage you to wear it often.  Sometimes, just coming out of wintertime neutrals, a bright color tends to jar the eye (but not mine! Smiley)  In a few weeks, that top may be your go-to top because that happy shade of yellow just makes you feel good.

I think that yellow with white always looks fresh, and yellow with navy and white stripe looks good too.  A multicolor striped shirt underneath would be cute too.

I love the style you chose--easy to wear but with interesting style lines.

rotfl  I really liked it over the orange tee.  I thought that was a nice look.  Sometimes really brights with really darks (black/navy/dark brown) can come off a little comic (sorry, in the words of Tony Soprano "I'm just sayin'"), but paired with a calmer tone in the same color range can look great - like the orange tee.  So a paler yellow, a medium orange, a light brown, I wouldn't put any blue with the yellow darker than a medium, sage green.  Of course, after DH's comment, it may be a moot point.  I don't know that I'd want to wear it again after where it's likely been  Grin

Martha,  I think that wouldn't have thrilled me, either.  She was the Folger's lady who always seemed to be wandering around in the neighbor's house with her coffee pot, wasn't she?  (it's the rrrichest kind. Smiley )  All the Swedish ladies in my family served Butternut, and really pooh-poohed the Folger's.   Grin    I think Folger's won though, around here at least.

Well, I stick with Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, myself.  Wink  Actually, it seems that the Swedish connection was triggered by the fact that I was bedecked in the colors of the Swedish flag and we had just finished watching a great Jon Stewart episode on Swedish socialism.  Oh, and my formerly very short hair was finally long enough to get snagged by an elastic which he thought made a 'bun'.  I wore it to the grocery today and no one stared.  Wink

Her name was Mrs. Olson.

I really liked your version, Martha.  I'm with BeeBee on the color of the "undershirt".  My monitor displays your top as a midrange bright yellow (whatever THAT means LOL).  I would graviate towards a light colored patterned fabric like this or this.

Thanks, Jodi, for remembering the name.  That print is perfect!  The same print came up with both links.  Were there supposed to be two?

I finally finished a tee from WOF 4/08.  It is a empire waist tee with a cross over band.  The band is not my style...too much chest attention for me, so I modified it to make the collar shorter and tie.  Kind of like a tie front blouse, so it looks a bit nicer than just a plain old knit tee.  I have camera problems, so if I can figure it out I will post something.  The top fits perfectly with the only alteration being raising the neckline and grading out to a larger size at the hip.

Martha, I am coming at this from a different angle - when my DH says things like that, I take it as an invitation to tickle him,  goose him or otherwise maybe give him a noogie (sp?).
I just tease him til he cries uncle and states that he really doesn't know much about fashion.

works for me

Though I must say, I do like the prints jodiwell posted.
wish I could wear those colors ! so cheery!

Andib, I love that pattern for your tee.  I have several pieces of slinky in my stash that it would be perfect for.  Alas, I am not a WOF subscriber.  I don't suppose anyone knows where I could get that 4/08 back issue?

Yay, Martha!  I think Jodi hit the jackpot with those suggestions.  I can hardly wait to see them paired with your yellow French terri top.

Could someone please remind me of the name of the fabric store that sells BWOF by the single issue.  I just recently lost the contents of my laptop and with it went my bookmark for this store.  Thanks.

Joanier,

Was it Sewbaby?  I didn't check, but have ordered single issues from them before.  Also, Fashionista Fabrics sells the Burda singly (did check that one  Wink.

Happy Sewing,

Sew Baby used to carry them but they don't seem to have them in stock now.  Others have suggested calling GLP and finding out which distributors they supply.

Nedra answered while I was typing but this may help anyway.  Good luck!

Question:  Any hints on making sure I copy ALL the markings I need to get things to line up?   I finished up this top (BWOF 7/2008 #118) earlier this week.  I had marked the sleeve cap for gathering, but couldn't find the corrisponding markings on the bodice . . .

Elaine, pretty top!

It's unlikely that there were corresponding marks on the bodice, so you didn't miss anything.
When BWOF shows points to gather, or ease between they just presume that that you will fit them to the other layer.

On a sleeve like this I would match the underarm seams  and then pin to the start of the gathers on the back and the front.  There is a centre mark at the top of the sleeve to match to the shoulder seam.

Then pull up the gathers to fit, before basting.

Elaine - check them against the little drawings in the magazine -- those show all the markings on the pattern.

Elaine, what a pretty top! I love the contrast yoke.

I have started doing the same thing Elizabeth suggested -- I check and doublecheck those little drawings before I remove my pattern tracings. This makes it easier later on, especially when I trace a bunch of patterns all at once.

I also tried a new method (to me!) for adding seam allowances -- using a plain old school compass to draw them on the paper patterns, set at my desired seam allowance. This worked fine, but I think my trusty Olfa seam guide and rotary cutter are more accurate. Less shaky, for some odd reason. Also, my alterations are easier to do before adding SAs.

Martha,

I am so happy the fabrics are working for you!  I am miserable at chosing myself because I want everything  Huh  I spent some time at Fabric Depot in Portland today with a very patient friend.  I must have picked up and changed my mind on 10 different fabrics.... She would patiently put them back for me as I found the next great thing.  For a table runner.  For crying out loud!

Elaine, that top is really cute.  It reminds me of the peasant blouses we wore in high school!

I am working on a muslin of another top in the BWOF 7/08...#108.

I thought it was cute, and being plus sized, I figured it might be cute small, but not so much in a larger size.  I sized up at the side seams and I am pleasantly surprised at the outcome.  I will add a little more at the sleeve edge, and make the neckine not so deep. I can see getting the right length will be an issue here.
I cannot get used to open necklines for summer.  Somehow I feel like the world can look thru my neckline to  my shoes!

I also do not understand why Burda uses a zipper!  It easily fits over my head...Also, it calls for a self faced yoke.  I found that bias binding is plenty.  I guess it is a good thing we think of directions as guidelines.  I never liked to follow the rules anyway!

Thank you for the compliments & suggestions.  I'm happy to say that I did what Ann said to do, so I'm feeling quite pleased with myself ( notworthy Ann is so smart, that if she says it, it must be the best way!!) I will make sure to look at the line drawings associated with the line drawings next time.

I finished the top to go with my 'sweatshirt' and thought you might like to see.  Thanks so much to Jodi for picking out this fabric!  Sorry about the wrinkles - I wore it to 'sewing club' last night.  Wink

The top is a Christine Jonson Baseware Two.  I added 'cuffs' to get enough length in the sleeves to peek out below.

edited to correct spelling - I guess I was overwhelmed by the peaks on the fabric.  Wink
