I know this thread is re: the Burda Style mag, but I was at JoAnnes today, and the clerk looked in back for the new box of Burda envelope patterns.  They came in a Simplicity box.  I was surprised that the "new" designs say "Burda Style" on the front, the old ones just said"Burda".  Who knows what is happening in Burda Land!

She also said they don't sell many of them, b/c they are too hard to sew.  I was surprised, but if that is the employee perception, it might be the customer perception.
I am going to be needing an interview outfit, so I need to start thinking about what I might want to make...Hmmm

Beebee,
I read the instructions for the neck finish on that easy turtle neck, groaned and decided (once again) that I would have to find a book that explained it in plain English rather than someone translating the original German into Korean then English. If anyone here can explain it another way I would be really grateful.

I think the idea is that once you have folded the collar facing to the wrong side you stitch the seam allowances together to hold it in place.
Although I would probably have done a stitch-in-the-ditch from the right side they suggest going 'inside' the facing and stitching there.

Does this help, as I think it's a really nice idea?  I think it's their use of the word "grasp" that's confusing. Roll Eyes

I think Burda may be splitting and labeling its pattern lines with more distinction and that may be carrying over to the renamed magazine.  There's a sixteen-page Burda paper flyer instead of a full-blown pattern book at my local fabric-store-taking-over-bookstore, and each two-page spread has a different subtitle:  Folklore, Petite, Style, etc.  (A stroke of brilliance all on its own:  sell patterns with complicated instructions next to clearly-written books for beginning sewists.)

Well, I went through all my old Burda magazines and realized that most of the new styles are retreads of the old in different fabrics. It seems as though the styles in the older magazines had more distinctive features, more quirky and fun details (and were easier to trace). If I can find a local vendor I won't renew and just buy the ones with patterns I like.

Since the old envelope patterns seem to be no longer available in English (although Fjølner, bless their little cotton socks) is translating them for us.

Elizabeth, I grabbed the above quote from the now-locked Burda thread. Could you explain? I don't know what you mean by "the old envelope patterns seem to be no longer available in English". Perhaps I missed this explained previously.

I think that's what I had in mind.  Two seams:  neck edge to wrist and wrist to hem.  Fold the neck inside and stitch in the ditch to hold it in.  And call it done.  Honestly, I'd never thought to look at Burda's direction for a garment like that.  Though I suspect that German to Korean to English may be the path they take.  Wink

Bee Bee, I have seen that done somewhere else, maybe Christine Jonson patterns?

As long as I can reacall, burda puts out those little booklets each season to highlight their new patterns.  When I dove into the new pattern box, they had 3 new BIG hard cover catalogs, so the next time this JAs tells me they don't have one, I can tell them I saw it!

I don't think the Burda envelope pattern written unclearly...Yes there are some patterns out there that are AWESOME as far as directions go(CJ PATTERNS comes to mind, NAYY), but I do not think they are bad at all.

I was also surprised how few patterns were in the drawer at JAs.  Usually one pattern of everything in their catalog fits into one of their pattern drawers.  Only 1/4 of the drawer was filled, and the recent box would have occupied another 1/4.

It would be sad to see Burda morph too much...I wish there was a local outlet for me to buy BWOF, but we are in a mid sized city that has no sense of fashion!

I'm still going to carry on buying it as there are always a few things I like.
The pants fit so much better than anything else so its worth it just for that.
And once I have the adjustments for tops cracked - I'm going to try the double wedges alteration for rounded back/forward head - then I'll be very happy.
The two layer in tee in September's mag appeals.

LisaB - I used to order all my Burda envelope patterns from the English website.  No more, and I can now only seem to order/download envelope patterns in the other languages they do.  I don't know that this means they have stopped distributing them, but the way I used to buy them doesn't work any more.

Oh, that makes sense! I was afraid they weren't available in U.S. stores anymore...not that I've tried to buy any recently.

My Fall/Winter Burda Plus arrived today (about a month late).  I saw the following note on the contents page:

"Our next Burda Style Plus Fashion goes on sale in Autumn/Fall 2011"

This sounds like Burda Plus will no longer be published twice a year.  Does anyone have any more information on this!?!?!??

That is interesting.  My Burda Plus has yet to arrive.  I wounder if this means the yearly subscription of two magazines will only provide one? Or will the yearly subscription now provide for two years?  I viewed a Plus magazine on line that was a 'best of' which means I already have all those from previous issues.  Is your magazine a 'best of' or new designs?
