Discussion: New Swap Contest on Stitcher's Guild!
« on: July 09, 2008, 09:04:51 AM »
Stitcher's Guild is going to be the Official Home of the SWAP Contest!

We're very excited about this, and as you may suspect, there are a lot of details to be ironed out.  We expect to be following the basic outlines of the SWAP as it has been done in the past, and in fact, we are extremely pleased that Julie of Timmel Fabrics, the SWAP originator, has given us her blessing on this.  She started something that seems to have a life of its own, and we're so happy to be able to continue the tradition she began.

Please watch this space for further developments and announcements.  :)

Yes, I heartily approve of the moderators of AS taking over SWAP next time around.    I think it will be done very well by these ladies,  and since Dragon Lady so kindly let me have SWAP here,  I like the idea that it will stay here.

How wonderful that SWAP will continue (and with Julie's blessing to boot)!  Over the years, the SWAP contest (and of course, Julie) have motivated so many women to think of sewing in a whole new light.  I know that the way I sew is vastly influenced by my SWAP experiences.    I just want to take a moment to thank Julie for all her time and effort that she put into the previous SWAPs - you were so appreciated by everyone involved.  And, I want to send out a hearty "yippee" to the new SG SWAP mods.

Very exciting indeed! I'm so pleased that this will carry on! Thanks to Julie for her blessing and to the SG mods for wanting to pick it up!

Such good news!!  I only finished once, but I always tried to enter, make the qualifying purchase from Julie and at least make a plan!

The group support through the planning process is wonderful, and I love to see everyone's creations!

Good news!  And I'm so glad that Julie has endorsed the changing of the baton, so to speak.

Same rough time frame?

I'd be thrilled to have a go at a full SWAP.  Like Shannon said, these contests help people think of their sewing in a whole new way.  I know I learned an enormous amount during the month long JCC and for the first time I think I could do a SWAP without panic.  I love the support this group gives.  I don't know anyone who sews (or does anything crafty at all), so it's a big help to read what others have to say here.  I look forward to seeing how things eventuate.

How wonderful that SWAP will continue (and with Julie's blessing to boot)!  Over the years, the SWAP contest (and of course, Julie) have motivated so many women to think of sewing in a whole new light.

I haven't participated in a SWAP previously and had seriously thought about doing so next year when I learnt that Julie was retiring.  I'm so glad that the SG SWAP mods are taking this on (with Julie's blessing).  After completing my garments for the JCC I am also feeling a lot more comfortable with the 12 items for the SWAP and have found the motivation and inspiration here very welcome and this is evident by the increased number of garments in my wardrobe in such a short time.

Thank you all  :applause2:

Just when I considered taking part in next years SWAP I had to learn that Julie was retiring..... but now I'm a happy bunny again.
Next year will be my first year and having had a little taste with the JCC can somehow imagine what will come at me.
I'm so happy that this tradition will continue and I'm very grateful to Julie and everybody who will take part in the organisation of this.  :applause2:

It is wonderful news that SWAP is continuing here - a big thanks to Julie. I didn't participate, but learned a great deal about how real women dress (instead of those yeuch fashion magazines that showcase the usual impossible outfits on coathangers). Also, it keeps me going through the dark days to read how a group who may never meet in person can support eachother. But please, when I read that you are sewing this from your stash, a shiver goes down my spine - the sewing shops depend on your custom. Your stash is there for a reason - you don't want to sew it up, so go on, get out there and give them your custom to keep them in business.

I am glad that SG is now the official home of SWAP and that it is proceeding with Julie's blessings!  SWAP sewing builds such camraderie as well as introducing everyone to new patterns, combinations and techniques that it is wonderful that it will continue!!!!

Add me to long list of folks who want to thank Julie for all the work she did with past SWAPs and for giving her blessing for future SWAPs here!

I had already begun amassing fabrics for next year's SWAP when I learned that Julie was going to shut down her business  :( for me but  :) for her... so this is wonderfull news.  Last year was my first attempt--I didn't finish, but I learned alot from my trials and from everyone here.  I'm hoping I can continue to learn....

And as somebody mentioned, now Julie can join the fun!

Thanks, SG, for continuing the tradition!

I too had decided to join in with SWAP next year - and like a few others was disappointed to think it might not happen  :(  But now that SG are going to pick up the flag and run the contest I am over the moon  ;D

I have watched SWAP from afar for a few years and love the concept!  Putting it into practice on your own isn't quite as easy, especially the first time round!  I did enter the JCC but didn't get much finished, mainly due to the fact that it is winter here in NZ and it is our busiest time of year (I co-own a quilting and knitting shop).  SWAP timing should be much better for me so I am looking forward to that.

If the timing stays the same it will be a good distraction for me as my parents are visiting us from UK for Xmas and I haven't seen them for 3 years - they will leave on 30th December so to have SWAP to look forward to and immerse myself in will help when they go!

I will start planning!  :P

This is so great.  This time I WILL finish.  I got patterns and have a plan in mind and a SWAP is just what I need to do for a working wordrobe.  :D.  Thanks!

I, too, am very excited.  I'd already decided to join in the next SWAP and like others was disappointed to think it wouldn't go ahead.  I've got a bit of a plan already, but my mother suggested that I could make a SWAP for her instead...

A recent comment on my blog got me thinking - does anyone here have the graphics wizardry skills to make virtual "ribbons" for the prize winners of the SWAP?  Winners could put them in their blog sidebars, or photoshop them onto the garment pictures, etc - like winning at the state fair ;).

That's a great idea!  I could put them under the usernames, where the little stars used to appear?

DL, I was reading along here and thought the same thing.  Little ribbons to go under the user's name where the other info about them goes.  Like a blue ribbon with 2009 on it...  Cool.  I started the SWAP last year and wound up unable to climb the stairs to my sewing room.  This year I was still in recuperation phase, both physically and business-wise, from a long sick leave.  Next year I intend to be fully functional and ready to sew!  My newly reorganized sewing room is ready to roll!  K

Really??? Is this something that people really want to do? Ribbons and stars and bears, oh MY!!  :P

Just asking, because this is something I wouldn't want to do. Then again, I tend to be in the minority about these things. It always surprises me.

Maybe I just like clean lines without clutter.  ;D

My thoughts, and they are only random musings:  I would like to participate in a SWAP but I am not the kind of sewer who can turn out beautifully finished garments.  I am working my way toward that as a goal, but meanwhile I am sewing, really, for the fun of it.  Seeing someone who has loads of ribbons or stars would intimidate me from joining in a SWAP.  Perhaps if we had a few different kinds of SWAPs (I am on the August plan, and joined the June plan).  We might have an "A" level, a "B" level, a "C" level, and then way at the bottom a "Carole" level..............

Remember Carole,

Karen will be at a level behind you. I also don't see much sense in stickers and stars. Perhaps I had enough of that when I was teaching. When you sew for the joy of it (and having a lovely final garment, we hope), a sticker or even a prize really isn't necessary. But nice comments or affirmation from your sewing peers means a lot. I found that out as I was participating in Jcc, JulyCC,  and August sew along. I like comment, helpful instruction, and encouragement from my sewing friends online.

Carole, this will be the last time I mention it, but you look so lovely in your new garment/avatar picture. I know the pictures aren't identical, but WOW!

oooh Carole, love your new haircut!

And you make a really good point about stars, ribbons, etc.
I love how supportive we are during SWAP sewing.  I like having deadlines, restrictions to work within and feeling a sense of responsibility to finish and post results.  But when it comes time to vote, I just have to detach myself emotionally.  I don't much like that part.

I may NEVER sew as well as some of the others here and I don't want to feel bad about that.  So I just try to ignore the feeling, run off and sew something else.
It's important to keep some sense of balance, as in, "was it good enough for me? yes, it was.  Well then, I am a winner to myself and that is all that matters".
