Elizabeth, if he can take a taxi to the part of Saint-Hubert Street, that'll be the more convenient. Otherwise, the Metro is about a 10 minutes walk to the part where the fabric stores are and the station is "Jean Talon".
The addresses of the fabric stores I like (there are others but these ones I love) Iplaced them in order of my personnal preference (that's very biased) but they are all in walking distance from one an other. He can ask the last place he visits to call a taxi for him. Naeela at Tueni fabrics will do that for him, she's adorable.
Tissu Tueni
7442, rue Saint-Hubert, Montreal, QC
Téléphone: 514-277-4785
The store where I bought all my JCC fabrics. European imported fabrics from designer's bolts (some Couture designers bolts too), absolutely gorgeous and expensive. The Chanel mohair/silk crochet is 187,50$ a meter and the Chanel texture silk is 97$ a meter. The tropical wool/silk is 55$ a meter (not a designer's bolt). My husband grins awfully when I tell him I'm going there. You can bargain a little but that won't lower prices much, maybe a 5 to 10%. The owners are a charming, lovely couple. The store is very tidy and beautifully arranged. They know their stuff, the bolts are organized by style so it's easy for a sewist to choose what she wants. The best would be to tell them from the get-go what your budget is. All bolts have a tag with full information about the fabric, including the price.
Textile Couture Elle

N° de téléphone : 514-271-1608
Textile Elle is the best alternative for Tissus Tueni if you don't want to make a deep whole in your wallet. It's pack full of wonderfull high end great fabrics. You can bargain the prices with the father and son owners. The ratio quality versus price is excellent (range from 10$ to 80$ a meter). You can send your husband a description of what you want then they'll find a close to exact match for him.
C & M Textiles Inc
7500, rue Saint-Hubert, Montréal, QC H2R 2N6
N° de téléphone : 514-272-0247
Originally C&M textile was a very well known address for home decor fabrics and very favored by interior designers. But times changed and now they are offering all kinds of fabrics. Quality is there too. Prices, please bargain to death with them. You can get away sometimes with only half the price they announced at the first question. I don't like the fact they tend to stick to your back and try to push sales. I think the vendors are paid on commission. I hate to be disturbed while I browse but your husband may need advice so that might not bother him.
Sam Textiles
7195, rue Saint-Hubert, Montréal, QC H2R 2N2
N° de téléphone : 514-278-9761
3 floors of textiles. The main floor is where your husband should look. They have excellent selections of silks, wools (I've seen a cashmere coating for 70$ a meter, in off-white, that was to die for, there are also beautiful cahsmere/wool blends for 40$ a meter) stretch, home decor.... Very large selection. Bargain is in order. It's the one I check last when I go to the Saint-Hubert district but lots of sewist love the place.

Last capsule board is ready. I finally found a stole I love on
Knitting Pattern Central
. I'll draft the parttern from the picture to sew it rather than knit it (I can't knit). It's seems simple really.

Zoubida- would this fabric work for the trim for your jacket?
I am working on a plan of neutrals, all tan and khaki. I have a lightweight jacket, trousers, skirt, and purse planned and a coordinating sweater purchased.
I am thinking of it as "The Only Tan I will get this Summer"
MaryPat, that's really nice. It might work, I'll order a swatch if they allow that. Thanks a lot for the link !

Oh, that shawl is TDF! I will put that in my "to-do" list. I do knit, although I'm slow at it (need to learn the continental way, would speed me up), but that is gorgeous. And thanks for another site to peruse for inspiration! Just what I need! I'm just catching up after a whirlwind week, the busiest I've ever had in my office (not a bad thing, but tiring). I'm going to stay in and do a marathon housecleaning/straightening up today, and do some photos for my blog with the JCC stufff I have so far. It's going to be tight because I am out of town till the 8th, then again on the 23rd through 26th, work one weekend which makes it worthless for sewing, and the lady who cleans my house is moving away June 1. I've elected not to replace her, since it is deplorable for a person who lives alone (well with 2cats and 3 dogs) to not clean their own house. So, I am doing very simple stuff, and my inspiration colors are from a strand of beads I picked up at Michaels last weekend on a foray with BeeBee.
BeeBee, I've seen that stripe, and I agree with Karroll, a trumpet skirt would be cool. You wear a lot of pencils, and they look good since you're so tiny, but why not break out a bit? The stripe is small enough, and regular enough, that you shouldn't have a match problem, and a trumpet would give those neat chevrons like Karroll described. I'd try it if you haven't made a decision yet.
Zoubida, I'm noting those Montreal shopping tips. I hope to get back there someday, I did go once about ?ten years ago, but with two friends (one was BeeBee, who hadn't come back to sewing at that point) and another old friend from high school who is a total non-sewist, so we never even looked for fabric. Next trip, yes. And I'll have your list in hand. Thanks! K

not to hijack the thread but...
Karen, I maintained that attitude for the last year - two adults living alone without animals, kids away at college, and I'm Not working - so I should certainly be able to clean the house. so there! You know what happened? I hate cleaning, especially every room all in one day, so I'd put it off and procrastinate, or do just a bit, then get distracted. The whole house was never clean at once, which drove me crazy, AND, my productivity fell way off.
I felt that I couldn't sew or knit until I did the cleaning, which really needed doing, but I never never caught up with it enough to sew without feeling guilty.
I gave in 3 months ago and got a cleaning service. Which means, since I dont know them and haven't vetted them myself, I'm present when and where they're cleaning, so I get sorted through piles of stuff or clean the stuff they don't do. And it also means that my house is clean again all in one fell swoop, and I'm free to be productive.
A word of advice, if it isn't cramping your lifestyle or budget, pay someone else to clean and spend your valuable time doing other things.
Think of it this way: you're providing an income for someone who needs it and you're freeing up that time for you to get done what you want when you're not working.
ok, I now return this thread to it's previously scheduled topic.

Just realised that I asked for advice but forgot to put my image in my post!!!
I would like to ask your opinion on the grape silk in the middle of the main photo - the one I was planning to make a shirt with. It goes very well with the aubergine denim and the silk tweed - but I am not sure how well it will work with the green silk homespun? Honest opinions please! I suppose if I was wearing the silk tweed jacket over the top it would go but I woudn't always wear the 3 pieces together. Thanks all
My instinct is to find something else that has a bit of green in it as well - should I just trust my instincts??

Kilts,
Your instincts are fine, and go with it if you want. I happen to love the green/purple combo. The value of these hues are balanced and will look great with your coloring. Perhaps a purple/green/ + additional color (rust, teal, gold, dk blue etc.) scarf , lg. pin or necklace featuring green stones would tie the two hues together for your satisfaction. But I would be very happy wearing the purple blouse with the green skirt. I really love the fabrics you've selected.

Thanks for posting the picture kilts. I just assumed it was me unable to keep up with all these posts!
I like the purple and green together. It's a strong look, but that is a good thing - as long as you like it.
Yeah, I could take both sides of the argument for or against hiring cleaners. When I was a single Mom, I hired a cleaning lady (well, she was younger than me and she had a couple of pals who worked with her). It was heaven! And we built up a nice friendship with them (we called them Charlies Angels) and they always left cute little notes for us, complimenting us on the good report card on the fridge or the sewing project in my sewing room.
It was definitely a win-win situation for us on both sides of the deal.
Nowadays, we don't need a cleaning service. My DH is an unusually energetic man, in my humble opinion. He keeps the place vaccuumed and empties the litter box. I scrub everything down on a rotating basis. And, amazingly, it works out just fine. That still surprises me after almost 4 years of marriage. I almost cried when I said goodbye to Charlies Angels and moved in with DH. But it has been just fine.
It must have been my daughter making all the mess ...

Marji, is your capsule for the pre wedding visit? Your colours are fabulous. I read on your blog that you are making two bridesmaid dresses, is the wedding later, or is all of this sewing for this summer?
Zoubida, I have developed a very bad case of fabric lust after looking at your fabrics. I also want a trip to Montreal with an empty credit card after reading your fabric shopping posts. Thanks for a very pleasant daydream or two! (I am safe, Montreal is about 20 hours flying time away from me). I have also spent the last half an hour looking at the gorgeous vintage knitting patterns, there are now 3 new stoles in my pattern collection, Thanks again.
Elizabeth, if I asked my husband to visit the fabric district for me, it would cost around 90,000 brownie points, the poor man has kindly sat outside more fabric shops than any woodworker should, but go inside a fabric shop, by himself!! it would not work. Your husband must be tough.
Kilts, I think the green will look fabulous with the purple as a 3 piece outfit with the jacket, but would be a strong look as a 2 piece outfit if the garments were plain, perhaps you could introduce some green to the blouse with embellishment or piping to blend a little more? I do think the colour values are very similar, so neither would stand out and overbear the other.
I am not progressing very well with my planning. I have decided to use the red batik, thank you for the comments when I was choosing, and in a great technological advance for me, managed to colour in a new look technical drawing of a blouse with this print. I have put a picture
here
, and hopefully will get it to the flickr site once it has some company. I plan to make 2 denim skirts, one long A line, and one knee length straight, and to topstitch in red. I am not sure of the 4th garment yet.
I have run out of time to read back any further, so I am sorry to miss commenting on other posts. It is great that so many people are joining in Elizabeth's contest.

I've just PM'd Elizabeth to join the JCC. I've been trying to hurriedly read everything posted here, but there isn't enough time to take it all in with detail. This is such an active topic!
I really have no hopes of actually completing my capsule, but if I can pull together the ideas and fabric and get
some
of it done by the end of June, I will be quite happy.
Like many others, I'm trying to pull together enough fabric and patterns to make my capsule. I don't quite have what I need to fulfill the contest requirements of all tops matching all bottoms, but I thought I'd ask for your help with what I have so far. I have three fabrics that I'm considering. The print I'll use is a semi-sheer rayon and looks good with both solids, but the solids do not look good together (IMO). They are just off enough to not work together. One solid is a drapey rayon/acetate with a touch of lycra, and the other solid is rayon jersey.
What I'd really like is a two-piece dress of the floral with the ability to mix and match with other pieces made from the two solids. I've posted a picture (
here
) of the fabric and another of some pattern possibilities. Please excuse the elementary nature of my line drawings. I would like a skirt that is semi-fitted through the hips and then has some flare, probably knee-length. I'd like the top to be semi-fitted with short sleeves. I'll probably make no-side-seam pants with the drapey rayon solid, but I'm not sure that the top I've got pictured will work with those pants. I'll make a twinset with the rayon jersey and will wear that with the floral skirt. The cardigan will need to work with the two-piece dress when the AC is too cold. I would appreciate anyone giving me feedback on styles of tops in particular. I have enough of the rayon/acetate solid to also make a skirt and possibly a jacket. Suggestions for the jacket are also needed as I've never made a jacket with a drapey fabric. Perhaps I should be looking at Loes Hinse patterns?
I've put some additional info with the pictures on Flickr. I don't want to take up too much space here with my rambling! Thinking all of this through reminds me of why I've never entered the SWAP contest. My hat is off to all those who pull so many pieces together!
I've really been inspired by the fabrics and plans everyone has been posting. Thanks, Elizabeth and Ann, for your sponsorship of the contest.

Zoubida, your fabric and the styles you have chosen are just beyond luscious. And thanks for posting all the info about fabric shopping in Montreal. I have never been there, but I think it sounds fantastic. I have heard such nice things about Montreal and it's really not that far from here in Maryland.
BeeBee, I will second Karen's opinion - try a trumpet flare skirt! You have plenty of fabric, right?
bluemooney- did you say something about painkillers? Did I miss something- I hope you are feeling OK.
And I must mention I am delighted to see more and more new people (even with babies the same age- how wonderful!)
Welcome everyone, it is so great to have you here.

Thanks for the nice comments on my pant pattern! I can't wait to get it in the mail. Em, it is an early 40's, I believe, it's a Hollywood pattern and features Katherine Hepburn on the cover! I have quite an obsession with the styles of the 20's , 30's and 40's. My ebay sellers love me! LOL!
This will be my most ambitious vintage project to date, sewing 4 items at once with vintage patterns. After the JCC, I have a cool 40's "playsuit" I want to try and then a tourista jacket. (If you want to see pictures, go to the What are You Sewing For Summer? thread)
Oh, how I want a cleaning service!
It's just me and DD, and we're not that messy, but I just hate the time I could be spending on more fun stuff. I could do every 2 weeks and it would probably be just enough. (I despise scrubbing bathtubs and toilets!
)
Kilts, I love that green and purple together! You could make a beaded necklace with all your colors that would tie them together.
Well, I goofed off today - went wine tasting (yeah!) , got to get some sewing time in this long weekend and get started on this capsule or I will be overwhelmed come mid June!

Do we 'have' to do a storyboard? I already know what I'm going to make, and I know the fabrics go together well, but I would really prefer not to have to find the time to do a storyboard!
I did have to change out one of the fabrics I had selected, it dawned on me the other day that it had some black in the design on it and I was planning on trimming it with black FOE! Oops! I'll probably make it up anyway, just not as part of the JCC!

kiltsnquilts: Burda WoF used to have a the "six basics". Featured a 6piece mini-wardrobe, and I remeber one of them to have your colour combination. And it looked great.
EDIT: found the
pictures
.
LisaB: I love your fabric choices! And your line drawings are just right, it´s all we need to see! I think the top will work with the pants, I got combinations like that (though I have collars to my blouses). The top would have to be long enough though to cover the top of the pants, in my opinion. Reganrding drapey fabric/jacket: I am sure that there are jacket patterns for drapey fabric. If you want a more structured jacket, you could always interface the fabric to give it more body.

Thank you for your feedback everyone - I hadn't actually thought of the fact that the values were the same and so wouldn't overpower each other. I will think more about the idea of bringing some green into the blouse somehow - maybe something subtle but different like green buttonholes!!??
I seem to remember reading a blog recently of someone who went to Paris and had taken a photo of a gents shirt in a shop window - it was black with amber buttonholes (possibly a stripe on the cuff and inside the collar placket too, can't quite remember but I liked the idea!) I also like the idea of a green/purple necklace combo - or maybe a narrow scarf that I could wear like a tie under my collar that has all the colours in. Thanks girls - you got me thinking and I am reassured about my fabrics together.
Thanks also to Morzel for the link to BWOF - that cemented my decision, I will stick with what I have
I am slowly seeing my sewing time slipping away as we now have to tile and decorate our bathroom and toilet - we have renovated on a budget and now the price from the tiler is so high we are going to have to do it ourselves!! He also kept us waiting 2 weeks to quote us a price - methinks he doesn't really want the job and has over quoted, wish he had just been honest! Anyway, with luck it will be done in a couple of weeks and I will make time to sew - I can see some early mornings and late nights!!
Melinda B - I didn't do a storyboard, just draped my fabrics and pinned my patterns to a foam core board and took photos! I love seeing everyone elses ideas so thought that was the easiest way to show mine without an actual storyboard!
Ooh - just thought of my name for my Capsule - "Green Grapes"!

I really like the purple and green together it is beautiful.
I don't have a very good eye for colour and so tend to stick with really obvious ones. I've decided to go for grey for this capsule. I went to my fabric shop yesterday (I only have 3 available - two good ones and one expensive one!). I have got enough fabric for three tops all to go with grey trousers only to struggle finding some grey linen mix for my trousers.
I'm currently doing some black linen trousers hoping that the pattern can be a TNT and I can knock out a grey pair as soon as I find some fabric.

I love the green/purple combination - they're complementary colours so will always look good together.
I'd think a bit about the green buttonholes; although it's a great idea it will limit you to what else you can wear with the blouse. A necklace or scarf to tie the two together would probably make the blouse more versatile.
Robyn, I can't wait to see how that BWOF blouse will turn out either - love your idea of making it dress length... I really want to start sewing
now
- it's wet and very chilly here so my planned weekend in the garden has to be put on hold.

As my allowed prefinished item, I completed my "berry" pants. I was going to wear them to church today, but when I looked in my closet, the only thing that went with them is a white blouse. It really brought home to me why I need to sew in capsules!

Oh wow... due to a few computer problems somehow the notification for this thread never reached me, which made me think that not much is happening over here.... well, it's the complete opposite!
I found a lovely fabric which I intended to use for the lining of my jacket, but I fell deeply 'in love' with it that I now use it as fashion fabric also. Here are now all the fabrics I indend to use for my entry.

I'm diligently trying to stay away from my favourite colour purple and my favourite accent green and here you are all tempting me!
Not much sewing progress here. I've got my pink and white stripe for my shirt and I've ordered 2 knits from Ann at Gorgeous things. (I was also tempted by and succumbed to a black with white embroidery.) I keep browsing internet sites for a navy bottom and more temptation!! I keep finding lovely navy linens, but it is winter here and I want to wear what I make. I'll have to find time to get to a real shop.
I'm finding the no black rule and my self imposed "try and stay away from purple just this once" rule quite hard. Purple definitely sings a siren song to me!

Kilts--Like others, I love the colors that you picked! They look wonderful together!
KayB--I love your colors, too. I'm using all stash fabric and am leaning toward green but in a different shade. Or I might go with navy. Or red. Or . . .
KathrynT--Sorry, don't want to enable, but purple is a great color! If I had some great purple fabric in my stash, I would be sewing a purple capsule.
I'm still working on picking fabric and patterns. The only thing I've decided so far is that I'm making this bag--the one in the upper right hand corner:

Oh, I just love all the colors and ideas and energy that is filling up this thread. I can't begin to catch up but I treasure every moment I manage to sneak in here. The greens and purples are wonderful, but then my whole wardrobe revolves around greens and purples, they are my best colors. Despite my love of the purples, my capsule is revolving around taupe and I haven't gotten much further than that. But hope reigns supreme.

Hi all,
I've been lurking here for a while and PM'd Elizabeth early on to say that I would love to join in. All of this is extremely new to me and this is the first competition I have ever entered.
I am so impressed by all of your lovely fabrics and plans (sorry too many to list) in your lovely Spring/Summer colours so my Australian Winter Capsule is looking very sombre. My accessory is still a mystery to me, however I am keeping my eyes open for ideas. I have managed to load it onto Flickr but am still working out how to get it here and also with a link in this message!!
The main reason for this capsule is the expand two suits already in my wardrobe, a Brown Wool Crepe Cardigan jacket that matches the skirt and then when I was in China last month with the Australian Sewing Guild I had a 2 piece Cream Wool Suit with brown flecks made up which fits extremely well (I'd love to know how they do their patterns
) for a very small amount of money.
I am really looking forward to this and am surprised how this has focused my sewing thoughts!!
Regards,
Sharon

Welcome to the group, Sharon! I think you will like all the great ideas and support here. May I say that I probably speak for all the ladies in the U.S., I am envious of your trip to China and the fabulous tailors you found there. Years ago I had a suit made in Hong Kong that sadly I had to give away as age caught up to my figure. I've never forgotten the great fit and wonderful wool. I am looking forward to seeing your creations!

hi Sharon, I had some suits made in HK but I find that they are too big for me - I like a more fitted silhouette (thought to myself, I wonder if I could adjust them...).
My Melbourne winter wardrobe I think will be pink, purple and green - some recent fabric purchases. So you won't be alone in making a winter wardrobe

Hi again,
This is my story board. The silk print is also from China AUS $3 for 2 metres so very happy with this as well. The oyster is not as grey as it looks, still trying to work out the new camera (not from China).
Thank you very much for the warm welcome

I'm brand new here, and totally enthralled with the idea of Sewing with a Plan! How fantastic! I haven't sewn clothing in several years. I'm in desperate need of clothes that fit, and I need a summer wardrobe. I tend to work better with deadlines, so it's just perfect timing for me to find this site, and this challenge. Sewing a capsule is just perfect, and will undoubtedly challenge me!
I'm not too sure what I need to do (besides sew the four items), and I'd be grateful for a heads up. I see posts about storyboards, and photos of fabric. What is required to do? Do I have to have something prior to June 1st? I saw the link to the flickr group, are there any other pertinent links I should know about?
I'm really excited, and quite surprised at myself for jumping feet first into something like this!

Welcome Jafael. The rules are in the first message of this thread: four items and an accessory; one can be made before June, one purchased, and no black. You don't have to do a storyboard, or post to our flickr group, but you're welcome to do so - many find the feedback very rewarding. Finishing even one item entitles you to vote for our JCC winner. The winner gets $50 (from me) and a $50 purchase from Gorgeous Fabrics, and there are $20 purchases from Gorgeous Fabrics for the best overall item and the best accessory.
Happy sewing!
EDIT: Just to be clear, eventually I will need digital photos of the finished items so that people can vote! Probably I'll say that photos have to be submitted by July 7 or something like that. I'll also want a write-up of the capsule, details of the patterns and fabrics etc, to be sent in with the photos.

Robin - I finally got up the nerve to have my wisdom teeth out, and did all 4 at once. Hence the painkillers. All went very smoothly! Thanks for asking. I did a lot of sewing while healing; and a lot of ripping and re-sewing as well, thanks to those excellent drugs.

I was right, DH hated the cream cotton he said it was too girly, but he liked the other fabrics so all good there.
The brown indian fabric is more greyey-brown with a kind of drip dye stripe along it, but it looks really nice, I just hope it goes with the trouser fabric when it arrives.
DH is nagging me to start sewing - he just wants to get at my laptop to play his empire building game. I did manage to measure him so we are making progress of sorts.
Nice to see so many pretty storyboards, I wish I were sewing girly clothes but that will have to wait till after DH is done.

I've decided to go with dark olive and red. Because I want to wear the things to work (boring I know) I am going to make the skirt/pants/jacket in the dark olive suiting and use a red knit for a top. The jacket may get made after the JCC in which case I would sew another top (prob in cream) for the JCC.
A necklace which brings out the olive tones would be my accessory - must start digging through my bead stash!

Welcome Sharon & Jafeal!!! Wow! There are some impressive and beautiful fabrics waiting to be used in the JCC. I'm on pins and needles waiting to see them made up.
I think I have most of my supplies and I've made fabric and pattern decisions. At the moment I cannot post pictures as my home computer is in the process of getting fixed. I took my work laptop home, but I cannot use it to download and post pictures.
I'm just a bit stumped on my accessory. If I really can't think of anything I'll use the red patent purse I recently purchased, but I'd sure like to be a bit more original than that. I bought a Vogue handbag pattern, but I'm not a huge fan of fabric handbags (for me that is). I like the handbags I've seen made by others. I'm kicking myself for not buying the white patent skins from Fabric Mart when they had them on their site in the winter. Maybe I can think about kicking the fabric handbag "up a notch".
I hope you're all having a wonderful long weekend. Our weather is gorgeous (finally) and I'm enjoying the time off from work.
ETA: I just bought 2 white & 1 red lambskins from an Ebay seller. I guess I'm making a handbag. However, I will work on kicking this up a notch. I have an idea to make the handbag in white and use the red for trim and cutouts or maybe roses.

Hi all,
For those creating storyboards, what software do you use to create them? I've decided, for fun, to use free burdastyle patterns for my capsule. I'm doing it all without additional expense, and those patterns are free. I do have existing patterns of course, but I like the fact that I can print multiple copies of burdastyle ones if I mess up on altering.
Storyboard coming soon, after I figure out how to do it.
