Hope this is the right place for this thread.

An auction house in the UK has an costume sale on 7th May in Knowle, near Bristol. The online catalogue isn't up yet, but should be worth a look.  The link to the Guardian website has a slideshow of some of the lots.  I think I could run to a bonnet.

I've come over all Jane Austin, now where did I leave my Mr. Darcy?

Guardians page for Bonham sale

Bonham's sale page - the catalogue isn't up yet.

Ruth,  What fun to see these!  Thanks for posting this, and I can't wait until they get the catalog on the web and we can really take a look at all of the things.  Smiley

Ohmigod!  I just checked and the catalogue is up - I could bankrupt myself several times over.

It is a shame that not all the lots are illustrated but there is still plenty to drool over from those that are.  There is everything from bundles of antique lace to Chinese costumes, as well as quilts, lace making accessories and handbags, shoes and hats.

Do you think DH would agree to getting married again so I can have one of these dresses?
A Nina Ricci cream silk 1930s wedding dress
OR
A 1930s cream satin beaded lady's evening dress

And then there are these
A Christian Dior ivory silk long evening dress
A pale blue beaded flapper dress
A group 1930s/40s dresses of cream and peach

I'm going to stop now before I just post the whole catalogue for you.

Ruth, I know you are petite, but do you really think Miss C would fit into that Nina Ricci dress? Sorry, I shouldn't have said that, I remember looking longingly at clothes with waists, in fact , I still do! I'm afraid there is not much hope for me, but you will fit into it in a few months, I look forward to pictures of your second wedding. Wink

You made me choke with laughter at the prospect of a costume auction at Knowle near Bristol. This is where the inhabitants load up their old sofas (90% of the year) into vans and dump them in country lanes. The other 10% of the time, they chose a blameless open patch of land in their own district, dump all the old sofas and beds on it, and start a huge bonfire on Guy Fawkes night. The toxic smoke hangs over the city for weeks!
No, it is Knowle near Solihull that has the auction house.

Karen

I didn't get past drooling at the picture - knowing you can't afford a beautiful dress is one thing, knowing you can't afford it and it wouldn't fit anyway is another.  (is that better than knowing you can't afford it and it would fit?)

Mind you if I had the sale price lying around and needing to be spent on frivolity then I might buy it just to own such a beautiful thing.
I would float around the house in it with all the buttons and zips undone, drinking martinis and declaring - "it's the pictures that got small"

Mcgintie - I used to live in Bristol so which is why I assumed it was Knowle Bristol - doh!  But what a backdrop those flaming sofas would make for the some artistic photographer to pose his Dior clad models infront of!

Of course, because then you are choosing not to buy it because you are sensible and rational, not being forced to leave it in the shop because you have no money!  :)I too am drooling over these gorgeous items, thank you so much for posting the link. Unfortunately my piggy bank for frivolity does not run to these pretties either (but I am choosing not to buy them because they are all size 4, unlike me!)
