Oh carole, so sorry you have this mess on your hands.
Yikes.  I am glad you had the stash out of harm's way, but this is going to be a hassle.

Oh Carole,

Sorry about your mess.  Thank goodness about the stash.

Such odd weather.  It is the time of year for temps in the 70's here but we are having 90's forecast?

Haven't we been reading about a drought down there?  I hope your rains help that situation at least.

What a mess, Carole  Angry  If you let your foot pedals completely dry out, they'll probably be ok.  COMPLETELY dry out - a good way to do this is to set them on top of the TV for a long evening - open (bottom) side up.  That's enough heat to help them dry but not hot enough to melt anything.  Glad the stash and machnes are safe.  Be careful yourself.

Oh Carole what a mess. Good thing you didn't have fabric on the floor.

I agree with Beebee's approach to drying out your foot pedals.

Carole, YUK!  What a mess!  We've been getting some of that rain, every day since April seems like, but you got a lot worse.  Today was just all day drizzle, and it's coming for nine more days.  Not 8" at once, though!  Hope you get it cleaned up, my Mom had that happen once and thank goodness for the shopvac.  Mine did it once because tree roots were in the overflow drain, not pretty and insurance guys not cooperative AT ALL.  So glad your stash was safe.  I agree with the others, foot pedals should be ok when dried out as long as nothing rusts.  I actually dropped a beeper in the toilet once, and it worked fine once dry because I did something similar and got it dry before the rusting could begin.  Since you found it quick, and can dry them fast, probably won't.  Stash would not have been so lucky, what good timing you have!  K

Carole - sorry to hear about the mess - I agree, since this looks like clean water, let the pedals dry out somewhere for a while sitting so any water can drain out and with good air flow thru them.   When my Dear Sweet Child took his cell phone to camp (against instructions) it got soaked, and I found instructions for trying to save it - 1. don't turn on, 2. remove battery and any covers that can be removed, 3. place in bag of rice for a week.   Apparently the rice soakes up the moisture.   I used some little bags of silica that come in packaging.   It worked for his cell phone, perhaps it would also work for your machine controls.

I'm happy the stash was relocated though!

editted - apparently I can't spell today.

Shocked Ohmigosh Carole, I saw the sewing room pictures earlier and just watched tv news coverage of Atlanta.... I am so sorry.  Maybe just because I'm used to (tolerable) earthquakes they don't scare me but floods, esp. like those I'm seeing there, really scare the heck out of me.  I hope you'll dry up soon, not just your pedals.

I'm so sorry to hear that!  I hope nothing is ruined.

We have been under flood watches/warnings also and have had a little water in the basement and some erosion problems, but not that bad.

Carole what a nightmare! I do hope you are OK and there is no more damage done. Are your machine pedals OK? We live somewhere that tends to flood and rising water is one of my great fears, there's not a real lot you can do to stop it is there, but good insurance is a must.

We have the opposite trouble today, we are blanketed in red dust! It has travelled around 1300km up the coast from Sydney and is over us now. It's just dreadful, it smells, it's so thick you can taste it every time you open your mouth, and oh my it makes it hard to breathe. We're on the coast and dust storms are something we don't normally get here, so it's all a bit strange!

Mother nature can be a bit unpredictable can't she!

Carol, what a horrible thing to happen.

Last year my foot pedal stopped working, so my husband took it apart (I had broken a bent wire thing that acts as a spring through lead-footedness) it took him around 5 seconds with a phillips head screwdriver, so even I would try it, and there was not much inside, maybe undoing them would help with the drying. So long as the connection for the plug dries out they may not have suffered too much.

Oh Carole....I am so sorry , I truly hope there isn't to much damage. Our basement flooded last yr while we were sleeping-yes our master rm is located downstairs-we still don't have it livable yet. Wishing you and all the others who are experiencing a over load of rain best wishs-stay safe.

That's quite an impressive picture, Carole.  First, that there is so much water and second, that it is so clear!  Is that a testament to your 'housekeeping' skills or the pavement outside?  Wink  We still have a high water mark in our cellar from the first year we lived here.  We had stored much of our belongings in the cellar while we remodeled upstairs.  And then it rained!  And the power went out for days so our sump pump didn't work.  Mother Nature is truly a force to be reckoned with.  Good luck with the clean up.

Thanks everyone, for your support.  Martha, your comment made me realize how lucky I am that the brick walls around my patio kept mud from sliding in and making it oh so much worse than plain rainwater.  The sun is shining today (contrary to initial weather reports) and the basement is now dry thanks to hard work, wet vacs, heaters and fans.  I am so tired that I've hired my yardman and his wife to come today and swab everything down with Pinesol and rinse with Clorox and water, I don't need mold or mildew.  But otherwise Atlanta is recovering and it's 80 degrees here with sunny skies.

Debbie, I saw in the news about Austrailia's dust storms.  I know how they can be, as I grew up in New Mexico and lived through a few of those.  Nasty.  I hope you do all right and keep us posted about your well-being.

Carole,

That was a horrible experience with the floording in your sewing room. Chattanooga has also been flooding in many places. DH was caught on the Interstate 4 hrs. due only to flooding/cars leaving flooded areas contiguous to the interstate. It's amazing here with water way above flood stage on the Tn River/Chickamauga Lake. Thankfully, we live on a surrounding mountain, but we still have to live in our area.

Carole, I'm so glad that the stash and other things escaped serious damage. But it is still so hard to do it all. Hopefully, your SS came over and gave you a hand.

ms plantladi your sewing room is KEWL.  Love the primary colors.  Definitely brightens up the room.   Also love your organization.  I'd have to clean for 2 days for my sewing room to look this good.  (what can I say.  The creative process is messy).

Wow love the idea of the mirrors.  Any possibility of new pics?  My single full length mirrors are either in a dark corner of my walk in closet, or the dark side of the basement bathroom.  I do look, but I'm beginning to think they don't show me enough. I'm feeling that way because I've set up my sewing room and have been able to take pics of myself wearing my clothes.  I take a front, right side, back, and left-side.  Pics are so revealing compared to to the full length mirrors.  Very curious as to how accurate the additional mirrors are for you.

Hi Bev - I added a new picture on my blog of the mirrors.  As long as I turn on enough lights, it's OK.   The mirrors are a bit small, but for $10 total investment, I'm not going to complain.      Do you look at the pictures on your camera, or upload to the computer?  I've taken pictures before, but somehow by the time I upload/look at the pictures, I get side tracked (more like derailed) and progress slows to a crawl.   If I can put it on, look in the mirror, stick in a couple of pins, or make a note of what needs to be let out, I have better chance of keeping working on it.

I can't see enough detail in that 1.5x1.5 screen.  I look at them on the computer, then post the best here on one of the topics.  Right now I'm using the What did you wear today, and the 6 piece autumn sew along.  But there have been several topics along the way to help with fitting issues.

Bringing this to the top. DH has been in my sewing room and all the wall and ceiling boards are off, the closets gone, and ready for the electrician to put in an electrical outlet on one wall that has nothing. They are going to try and put in 2 overhead lights for me so the room will be bright for sewing. A new window needs to be ordered, plastic put on the outside walls and then DH can put on the gyproc. I am getting excited about it all. I will post pictures at Christmas.

Ann, that sounds amazing!  Getting to design a sewing room from the studs up.  Storage, lighting--everything!  You'll be able to use your space to best advantage.  Please let us know how it is going.  (We'd love to peek over your shoulder from time to time.)

Have fun. Pink Pom-Pom Pink Pom-Pom

Lisa, I will keep you posted. This will be my biggest sewing room ever. I am keeping the design simple - light coloured neutral walls, a large closet that could have an organizer in it and laminate floors for easy cleaning. I have a lot to put in that room - sewing cabinet to hold my Viking SE and serger, table for my Viking Diamond, places for my ironing board, press, cutting table, bookshelf and what ever else I have forgotten about - oh my first sewing machine table that I found stored in DD's garage for mom's Singer Featherweight. I would love to have some shelves put up to put some things onto and hang up a few pictures. I am hoping that it will be a really nice room.

I am not worrying about a chair in there as I can do my hand sewing upstairs in the livingroom or downstairs in the family room.

I have been getting long-distance updates on my sewing room. DH is putting on the last of the mud, doing a bit of work in the closet and hopes to buy the paint on Monday. He wants it painted by next weekend. I have chosen the laminate so we will get that when I get home and will lay it over Christmas. I will take pictures of it prior to loading it with boxes and tubs and whatever else needs to go in there. It will be a storage room until I get home for good as DH wants to redo the hall and the little room across the hall from my sewing room. He also has to do the upstairs bathroom as it is totally empty - nothing in it. That will be designed at Christmas.

Here are some pictures of the sewing room. Not done though it is painted and flooring is put on. DH has to put in a new window when the weather is warmer, do moldings and doors. But I am a happy camper with the results to date. And, it is going to be a storage room while I am up north.

Picture 1: Closet area. I have an organizer to put into this closet so it will hold some of my fabric. The rest will be stored in the closet of the room across the hall.

Picture 3: The door into the room. The flooring is an oak laminate that has the "old" look to it. It is single planks with a grove so it looks like hardwood flooring. DH laid this floor in one day and loved how it went down. The majority of the basement will be in this flooring.

It's messy, cluttered and cramped, but this corner of my living room is my sewing space.  In it you'll notice my brand new Janome 6600P which fits perfectly into the cabinet I bought for a Singer Stylist 534.

It's beautiful, Ambimom!   It doesn't look cluttered, all I see are gorgeous machines, a beautiful cabinet and those wonderful bright windows, plus that great thread rack!  Who wouldn't love it?   Smiley

Thanks for sharing it with us.  It's a treat to see it on this dreary, wet, cold day even here in the deep south.
