Looking forward to seeing everyone here in Asheville the end of this month. Joan and Alice are staying at my house - party time!! We're looking forward to all the inspiration and good times
Louise, will you have any of the new Shapes patterns with you? Can you give us a hint about them? Looking forward to making the new Flow pattern. Back to my upstairs remodeling with DH.

I used a 100% cotton...very tiny birdseye pique. It had a semi soft hand...kinda' like a very good men's pima cotton shirting...Running for the retreat stuff...till later, Louise
My mother and I were talking about fabric this weekend; where she used to get it in the '50s and '60s; what she made; etc. She laughed and said "guess what I used to pay for the best pima cotton in Nashville - 50 cents a yard!"

OK ladies - This is the first time for me to attend the retreat in Asheville. What do I have to look forward to (whatever it is, I know it will be fun!)? What are you bringing with you to work on during the week? Will Louise be bringing her fabrics with her (and everyone's question - Will she bring her new pattern, Ebb and Flow)? Will we have time to purchase fabric at Waechter's? We only have one fabric store in Nashville, so it will be nice to see what other fabrics are out there (I know I can shop on line, but I like to touch and feel!). Looking forward to meeting some of you!

You'll be able to shop the Waechter's inventory. I don't think Louise or Linda are bringing fabric - they didn't last year. Waechter's will be hosting the trunk show and the get-together party at the store on Sunday evening. They will be having another evening event back at the store another night. Linda and Louise are on hand there to help people with pulling things together. If you have a piece or pieces of fabric that you've been wanting advice on what to do with it, but don't know - bring it. You might be surprised. You can select a coordinate to pull it all together, trim and buttons from their vast collection of buttons and closures. I think they have really reasonable prices too.
I am looking forward to getting the new pattern then, but things happen. Hopefully Louise will have them with her.

I'm checking in here from Cape Cod where I will be until time for the workshop. I didn't know Alice would be there at Terri's, too!! Guess I better catch up on my sleep before I get there because it sounds like a big ol' pajama party may be in the cards. I'm going to work on one-seams. The only pair I ever made was when I weighed about 70 lbs. more than I do now and I guess I made them too big even then because they were huge! I'm looking forward to Louise's expertise to help me fine tune those babies now that I weigh something more like normal and could really use a "go-to" pants pattern. I also am planning to work on fitting an Anything But Ordinary jacket (been working on that one a long time, too and kept losing weight before I'd get it made. I have a beautiful piece of silk woven that I bought from Waechter's last year that I've been waiting to cut into.) If I have time I'd love to start an "Of the Moment" out of a pretty piece of wool I have that I acquired at the Sewing Expo last March that would look great with the inside of the lapel showing. I've not done much with Sewing Workshop patterns but I'm looking forward to checking those patterns out. I think it will be fun to see the trunk show and have a chance to try on a few of the garments to see how they work before launching out with the pattern.
Did I mention that I'm excited?

Hi everyone,
I am busy getting things ready for the workshop too. I have cut out a Popular Demand jacket with more length for a shirt. It is plaid linen and took me forever to cut to match the plaids. Also, I am knit-weaving some fabrics us use in an Ikina jacket, this is done on my knitting machine. I am hoping to have it ready to go also. Linda Lee helped me fit the Tribeca last year, I have made a wearable muslin and I like it a lot, maybe I can find some outstanding fabric at Waechters to make another one. I am looking forward to meeting you all, it will be a fun time and we will learn some good stuff too! Barbara

Hi Joan - Alice and I had been talking about this and I wasn't sure she would be able to make it with everything going on with the gas situation and other things.
Not speaking for you (Alice) but it sounds like you've been fighting the same cold/flu thing my son had when we got back from Italy, and it's hard to shake.

I can't wait to get to Asheville! I have been sewing LOTS from both pattern lines and plan to bring as much as I can to get more specific help with how to make them better. Not really planning a particular project to do while there. I'm the one from last year who did not do a project. I was teased mercilessly! I really feel for me to concentrate on only one pattern (project) is a waste, but to get help on several is a better use of my time there. I also want to check out some ideas for changes I could make to some of these patterns. Besides, I remember the lighting was not great and I like to visit with everyone else. I'm sure you get the idea.
I lived in Asheville during the mid-sixties and it is always a treat to return and see the changes. I want to check out, in depth, Bellagio and a couple of other interesting stores I know of there. Does anyone have a suggestion for breakfast other than the hotel? How is Tupelo Honey? Good? or just another tourist place.
Last, but not least, what is the best way to drive from Atlanta- up 85, to Greenville and then 25, or should I go on to Spartanburg and I-26. Thanks! It was a 4-hour drive back when I lived there, but with the newer roads I hope that has improved?

Cutting/Lee Workshop Ladies,
I've been listening in to your Ashville plans with great interest, since I cancelled my reservations for the WS about a month ago. Don't know if that was a good idea, but I surely am sorry now. Actually, I'm torn; DH strongly desired a beach trip before Nov. and this was the only week he had available. His background consists of summers at the NC coast all during his childhood/teen yrs. It's hard to remove that memory from his loves, and he desires a "beach fix" every once in a while. We'll be in the panhandle area of FL at a small area outside Destin called Watercolor. My sister gifted us with a week in her beach condo there, so the two of us will enjoy our time at the beach. And I will await all reports from your trip and will be jealous of all the get togethers, shopping, and sewing. Post lots of pics so I can live vicariously through your trip.

Karen, I am sorry we will not be able to meet, but you will have a wonderful time in Florida. The weather there this time of year can be great and the crowds low.
To whomever was asking about fabric buying at the retreat- Joyce, Waechter's gracious owner, kindly assisted us last year by bringing over to the hotel some of her vavoomist fabrics. Also, she brought over the sample chest. I have wondered this past year if that chest of fabric samples, all nicely labeled and organized, has recovered. Not a fun job for the person who had to straighten out the mess after we were all through. Of course, the store is not very far from the hotel so it is very easy to pop over anytime and ogle, (buy) fabric. Joyce also set up a large table of general sewing notions for purchase at the hotel.

Barbara and Pat,
Thanks for the shout-out. I will be with you all in spirit. Next year is a definite for me DH or not, although it's been a while since the two of us have been away for a little respite.
Sew, purchase, and visit to your hearts' content.

Has anyone thought about using "In the Trenches" for a raincoat? I notice EOS has some interesting rainwear fabric and I have been thinking I would like an Eskandar like raincoat. I think this pattern could work with some modification. Any thoughts?

Pat,
The raincoat fabrics at EOS are TDF. I've got to look up "In the Trenches" to remind me what it looks like, but those fabrics would make any coat beautifully.

For those of you asking about places to eat breakfast besides the hotel for the Asheville retreat, I quizzed my cousin (who lives so close to Waechter's and doesn't even sew!) and her response was to try Sunny Point on Haywood Road (
not
Haywood
Street
) or Early Girl Eatery on Wall Street. However, Tupelo Honey was top on her list, seconded by Mayfel's which is about 2 doors down.

Velma- Thanks for the breakfast suggestions! I will check them out. I notice there is a bakery next door to Wachter's which looks promising for maybe just rolls and coffee. But, I think at least one visit to Tupelo is called for. Trip Advisor has some good reviews.

Alice,
Thanks so much for the comment; I was really anxious to meet you, too. But I hope you all have a glorious weekend, and I'll think of you and all your fun. However, I will see the group, soon. I'll connect in Atlanta in March or next fall at the WS in Ashville.
Is everyone planning to buy fabrics or just "tighten you belt" and sew from your stash? I have thought of really working on my stash, then I spent some time at EOS site. Oh, she has such glorious fabrics, but they are investment pieces, at least for me.

As far as I know, Joyce has planned dinners for each night. I know Sunday evening is a cocktail supper and trunk show at Waechter's - to get to know everyone. Monday is something - can't remember, and Tuesday is catered at Joyce's house.
I have not been to Tupelo. Since I live East of the city, we like to go to another local restaurant that is fairly new, the
Cafe Azalea in East Asheville
on US Route 70 (west of the VA Hospital) , which uses local produce, meats, cheese, etc. They have their own garden off Lower Grassy Branch Road. In addition to dinner, they have a tasty breakfast and lunch menu and the prices are about what you would pay at IHOP except you're getting much higher quality. Here are the breakfast & lunch menus
http://www.wncinsider.com/cafe_azalea_menu.htm
I love their Pain Perdue with peaches in the summertime and raspberries or whatever is in season. And they make these big biscuits with rosemary and herbs. Can't eat that every day though but it is a nice place to stop for brunch or meet friends.
And across the street is the Ultimate Ice Cream, which is preparing an ice cream (chocolate with Italian rasberry sauce) pie for my guests. I ordered it this evening. Maybe I'll need two
I've got more than a few cases of nice wines in the basement. The pears are ready for picking and the apple tree is loaded. Anybody want a ton of black walnuts?

Oooh! That all sounds wonderful! I've been here at Cape Cod (Provincetown) for a little over a week now and the restaurant prices are horrendous. On top of that the food I've encountered is very heavy and not terribly fresh. There may be a few places that we've missed but they probably also carry a price tag of about $30 and up for an entree. Your cafe sounds wonderful and I will file that information away for this trip or another time when we are in Asheville or are traveling through. Sounds wonderful.
We are going to have so much fun!

I've been out digging in the dirt and dividing/moving plants. It got too hot and I was about to pass out so I quit. I'll get back to that this evening.
On our trip across the state Monday, I was perusing the Italian September fashion magazines I picked up and lugged back with me in a tote bag. It occurred to me that I hadn't done a thorough job of going through them so the day trip to VA was just the time. Gave me a whole lot of ideas for fall and so many of the garments/outfits in the Italian ads in Marie Claire, Vogue and Elle were more like Cutting Line Designs, Shapes and the Sewing Workshop patterns. I had a notepad and wrote the ideas of this fabric and that style/pattern. They feature the Italian independent designs that you rarely see in the US.
Yesterday I was a guest at the Edward Buncombe Chapter DAR of North Carolina. They meet for lunch once a month in one of the dining rooms at the big, domed First Baptist Church on Charlotte Street. I wore this outfit - the tiny black and white check One-Seam pants, a black silk top and the pale yellow wool crepe A Simple Twist jacket and it was perfect for the weather and the occasion.

I am on the fly...I am working on 3 new Shapes drafts and have to get them to the blueprinters shortly.
Just wanted to let you know 'E&F' will be at the retreat in Asheville. I just heard that they are being shipped shortly from the printer and I asked for a box to be directed to Asheville for the end of the month retreat. As soon as I can locate 'webboy' he will get all the info up on the website...he has all the info...now it is just to nail his foot to the floor to get it up.
When I come up for air....hmmm...like mid November...
...I will be back here helping with questions, etc. till later, Louise
p.s. Hope to see some of you in Kansas for the Sewing Expo next week.

Just wanted to post a weather update for the upcoming week. The temperatures are dropping, the leaves are just beginning to change colors, and we will be bringing our tender plants and the mandevilla vines in this weekend since there is a frost warning for tomorrow night. We keep those tropical vines in their pots, putting them in the ground after the last frost, then trim them back and take inside for the winter here. So next week here days will be in the 60's and nights in the 40's. Keep checking the Weather Underground site for their forecasts.
Oh, and if anyone is still considering coming to the workshop, call Joyce to see if there are any spaces. The gas prices in western NC are the LOWEST in all of North Carolina (less than $2.80) and there is plenty of it now
I modified this post (removed Woodley's photo) because I had to post this fabulous
Phillip Lim Sweater Coat
at Barneys NY that you could make using Louise's Of the Moment pattern and apply binding to a sweater knit. Go to the link above and zoom in to see the details. The pocket is a zipper pocket.

Louise - just wondering if you need another source for point presses? Heard your story about the older gentleman that is your current supplier. I'll bring them with me to Asheville this weekend. If you have a chance, you can reply to my personal e-mail. I am soooooooo looking forward to the retreat!

Alice and I are so excited - the big event is just days away. Temperatures will be in the 50's and 60's during the day and nippy at night. Lots of preparations going on. I dropped off my big cooler to Waechter's for the Sunday night cocktail party. I understand that's the time to wear your show-off outfits.
Louise and all - there is no such thing as "normal". My son called me at 1:30 am to ask the medical advice hotline (me) why he felt sick and weird after eating at a local Indian restaurant - mixed grill platter with shrimp - four hours earlier. DUH - he's had a reaction to those farm raised shrimp before - we never ever eat shrimp unless I know it was caught in the US gulf waters. I told him to drink lots of water and go to bed - call me in the morning -- he's fine today.
Working a basic black shapes skirt in a drapey black fabric. Back to the sewing chamber while DH watches THE ball game. You can be sure I'll get a play be play update.

I finally arrived back in N.C. this afternoon and am excited to begin preparing to come to Asheville Sunday. I've had no time or any of my sewing resources to even think of it until now. So, I've got to get busy. I need to get my one-seams pattern size selected (again!) and try and select a fabric to make a wearable muslin. I think that's what I'll start with. Then I have a couple of pieces of wool jersey to make one-seams with after I'm happy with the fit. I'm assuming that will be a good fabric to make one-seams with. It's getting cold up here (27 degrees tonight) and I need some warmer clothes to wear since I'm starting from scratch with winter clothes.

Went to the KC Sewing and Quilting Expo yesterday. Of course, I stopped by Louise's booth. She has the Ebb and Flow patterns available and I bought one. Now I can't wait to dig into it, but will probably have to wait at least a week since I have a business trip next week. Maybe I'll just take the pattern with me and read it through and study it.
I'll be going back to the Expo today to do more shopping and attend a couple of classes. It is so much fun.

Many thanks for posting Judejean
I've been rushing around getting ready for Sunday. Evidently the trunk show garments are arriving at Waechter's and they asked if they could borrow one of my rolling racks. That's good news since there must be tons of new garments and ideas for us.

WOW! What a great time in Asheville!!! It was wonderful getting to meet the other 29 or so ladies, especially Joyce and her crew and Linda. I've met Louise before, and it's always a joy to be around her, too. I was also glad to meet the Terri behind all the beautiful clothes she makes - I'm jealous of the time you have to make them! Weren't Paddy's coats absolutely lovely? It's always fun to see different creations and get new ideas. I'm so used to heirloom sewing and making clothing for children. It's a new experience to sew adult clothing. I hope I can make it again next year.
