To Terri, thanks for posting you CLD patterns in beautiful fabrics...I saw the ones you posted on SW and it is becoming a sleek working together wardrobe...have you been reading a booklet

Thanks for the complement Louise.     I got so many ideas that I got from the two that you published about a year ago for planning and sewing wardrobes.    The travel one really helped me plan my August trip to California and the spring trips to DC for various business and personal functions.     The storyboards in the booklets are very useful in terms of a reality check.     I have other "style" books but they are not garment sewing oriented at all.    I'm working on more coordinates and will post a storyboard with the fabric swatches and I would appreciate any ideas and comments from the CLD fans who post here.

I JUST FOUND MY CUTTING TABLE Grin...oops cap lock left on!

Sorry, Terri, there was no plug intended....when Sandy and I work in the booth...someone will be questioning a garment 'go togher choice' and we will both answer the same thing or very similar...start to laugh and say 'I think I read that in a book somewhere' Wink...but, I have had so many ladies order the 'clutter' booklet and then head straight to their closet...then, order a couple of copies for friends who sew and don't sew to give as presents....sometimes reading in a booklet what they are not able to say to their friend face to face.

My thoughts are, when you see someone pass you by in an airport, mall, on the street....not totally dressed up as if they have just come from a charity fashion show event...but, just pulled together...and the first thing that comes to mind is "Why can't I look like that?" And it doesn't have to be a ton of money outfit and a trillion dollar 'agressive' looking handbag...just looking great. That is what the wardrobe concept is all about. Getting rid of the orphans in the back of your closet...making something to go with it or not sewing orphans in the first place.

Not everyone is a city dweller and would look funny dressed to the 'nines' every time they walk out of the house in most of America...just taking care of how they look...and if that is the only items in your closet...'care clothing'...anything you put on, you will look great.

Now, we are not going to talk about how I look today....I did catch the cats sitting on top of the garbage can lid talking earlier today...if I'm not mistaken...I believe I heard Tootsie say to Twinkie about me...."you're name came up at lunch today!"

Back to the salt mines, later, Louise

Uh oh, sounds like mayhem will ensue...at least that's what happens at my house when the cats talk to each other!   Shocked laugh

Oh I understand Louise and wasn't doing that - apologize if I did.   I would like to get some advice from the topic readers on various choices and my storyboard when I've got it together.

Even when I just to go out shopping like I just returned from, I like to be casually put together, plus I like to wear all the great stuff I work so hard making!!
I wore my new black eyelet SW jacket over a clay colored lightweight wool pant and a neutral peach/beige 3/4 sleeve top.   And I took your advice and added a casual torsade  (twisted, multi-strand) necklace that pulled it all together.

I went to exchange a belt for a different size at the Tanner store in Black Mountain and the manager complemented me on my outfit.    It's a nice day and their spring coordinates were in but still $300 for a jacket, but they were busy, busy.

I'm with you, Terri. Since most of my clothes are pulled-together casual, I feel really good wearing them out on a daily basis. When I shop, have lunch, meet a friend or attend an event,  I like to wear all my clothes handmade and RTW--with jewelry etc. I see no reason to have them and not wear them. I also enjoy them at home unless I'm into a messy project or house cleaning. I can read my computer, read a book or mag., or visit with a neighbor very easily in my nice casual linens, wools, cottons, etc. Of course some of the time, my at-home wear consists of a housecoat or sweats.

I'm anxious to see a finalized picture of your black cut-out jacket; the in progress picture looked great. Glad you wowed (SP?) the Tanner people. I was sorry to hear that they no longer carry fabric or notions. I was looking forward to shopping there again.

Happy Easter Everyone!  Didn't make the Sunrise service but am off to the 9 a.m. then brunch with my son and then 18-holes with a client.  But wanted to tell you all just why I love the fact that I sew!

Whiles shopping in Naples I found a store that sold the Planet line of clothing.  I love it - very much like Eskandar - and great fabrics.  Bought a fabulous 3-piece outfit which my best friend said was the best thing she had ever seen me wear.  I loved the pants ($250) which I had to have to complete the outfit.  But I told the sales lady I was almost positive I had the same fabric in my stash from a sewing workshop in Winter Park in January.   Could I return the pants if I got home and found that to be true?  Well, she of course said yes, but said these were made of  a very high quality, silk/linen and she really didn't think the fabric was available to the public.  Tee hee.  Yesterday i finally had two minutes to go digging  and there it was - 3 yards of the very same fabric which I had purchased from Louise.  I called the store, had never taken the tags off the pants, and they graciously said I could return them.  The pattern for the pants?  Loes Hinse's crop pants done a little longer.

I emailed Louise and told her about this and she said she's now out of the chocolate I bought but has that fabric now in Wedgewood blue and yellow.  She's sending samples!

Aren't we all glad we sew!

I have several wardrobe and style books in my collection so when Louise first came out with "Cutting Through the Clutter" and "Cutting Across the Country in Style" I didn't really think I needed her books.  I am not sure what I read or saw but I changed my mind and ordered these two books.  Well I have to say I am very glad that I did.  Louise's way of saying things makes it so easy to get a grip.  I recommend both of these books to sewers and nonsewers.  I have made transparent paper dolls of her patterns (that way you can put the transparancy on top of the fabric) and have a storyboard of sorts.  It really does help you see the possibilities.

Louise,
I hope you give us more information on your retreats this year soon.  I told Steve I wanted to attend one and he said I had to get all my work done.

I'm off with the kids for Spring Break and casually reading the Life Section with my lunch. Turn the page and see Louise looking at me! My paper, the Dayton Daily News (Ohio) picked up the article from the Orlando Sentinel that Louise posted about awhile back! I was so excited! I'm off to call my mother to have her pull that section to read right away. She took a class (at my urging) from Louise a couple years ago at Novi. She loved Louise!

Linda,

I don"t know how much you want to travel to attend a workshop, but I just signed up for a L.Cutting/L.Lee workshop in Ashville, N.C for Oct. 26-29.I am just so excited, because I have never attended ANY sewing workshop, conference, or class.  Most of you here are much more advanced and learned than I concerning the art of sewing. I am new to all of this and am estatic over the prospect of attending. Check on line if this would be convenient for you. And I'm sure Louise will post a list of her workshops she has since you asked for it.

You gals are getting ahead of me...I am working on Tulsa, Asheville, and Orlando retreats...make sure you are signed up for the newsletter. The info will be going out shortly

Been busy drafting the next pattern, filling orders, working on some interesting upcoming.....hmmmm...stuff....dealing with a kitty wanting to type....

Back to the drawing boards...

...as far as the picture in the Orlando paper and now the Dayton paper....they must have taken a hundred shots over the 2 day period they were there...and this was the best they could have come up with Roll Eyes.....every photographer knows you never take a picture of a women looking down...ever...especially after a certain age.....if you want to see what you will look like in 30 years...place a good size mirror on your bathroom counter and look down into it...not a pretty site...all the skin on your entire head falls forward and creates a very, very old fleshy person! Oh, gaud, and now it has been picked up in other newspapers! 2cool

I think my next drafting will be a hood with a zipper all the way up the front to the top of the hood and go hide!

Hey Blue Mooney and Alice,

This is just like getting a surprise phone call; two questions in the same posts. BlueM, I googled Cutting Workshsops and got this link to Waechter's Silk in Ashville. Hope I spelled that correctly. The site says a form is included on the site, since I didn't see it, I called the shop. I was told to send $100 deposit and they's send me all the info. and I was registered. I'm really excited about the WS and meeting other sewists.

Alice, thanks for the questions about my sisters. Even though we live in other cities, we travel together about 6 times a yr. for "Sister Weekends" and lots of fun. None of my sisters sew, but they are all very artistic. The one of the back left is an attorney, has a busy schedule, and buys lots of fun and beautiful clothes. The other sister seated owns an fine arts and craft shop. She is the trendy-est and  most artsy of us all. The one in the middle back loves clothes, is easy to fit, and wears them well.  I was an educator, though I had a minor in the visual arts and taught art in the public schools for 5 yrs. I have always loved fabrics, and everything connected to the fiber arts. I sewed as a teenager and a 20something, and am just back into it.  We were all raised around sewing and a sewing machine as our mother made all the clothes that the 4 of us wore. That included formals with rows of netting etc. I realize now, how little I know, compared to all you advanced sewists. But, I love it and have a lovely stash ready to dig in.

My sewing space has been in a small 4th bedroom containing my desktop on a huge, ugly old computer desk. Along with the machine, notions, fabrics, etc. is a bulky antique bedroom set of my DGM. As you can see, I lack a good space and I have not organized it like those of you with even small spaces. But April 1st, my DS starts leasing his condo and will leave DH and I with two additional rooms. After painting, cleaning up the rooms, I will finally set up my sewing room. Hallelujah!!!

I have probably given you TMI (too much info) but both husband and son are out of town so I'm just typing away.

When you have time, tell me your sewing history.

Alice,

It's funny how much "smarter" our kids get as that get in their 20's. We we like that? It sounds like with all your great Expo stash and independent patterns, you all really sewing for summer. Summer is truly hot here in the South; we do have to dress for the weather. I wouldn't consider lining a top or jacket to wear here (TN) in the summer; you'd just swelter. Congratulations on all you're accomplishing.

I just signed up for the October retreat in Orlando with Louise and Susan.  Louise sent out the notice this morning.  I am really looking forward to attending this retreat.  I have never been on a retreat and this one looks grand.  We had Louise in Cincinnati for a Sit and Sew and all day class for out "Spring Fling" two years ago.  I had the privilege of being Louise's hostess  We had such a good time and I learned so much.

That sounds wonderful! Both those wonderful teachers is one workshop. Enjoy your trip.

Alice,
Where is the good fabric shop in TN. Is it in Memphis? Sorry your back is not up for a workshop. One respected physician that is a quilter stated that we should stop and stretch every 45 min. doing shoulder rolls, stretching, and walking. Maybe  that will help.

I have not visited this site recently, so my post may be offbase.  Someone was asking about the fabric store in Tennessee.   Could you be thinking about Sirs?  They have great prices year round, but in MAY have a month-long sale.   I think it is close to the Alabama border - north of Huntsville.  I may try to go this year.

DH and I went to a fabulous wine dinner this evening at the Cafe Azalea , one of Asheville's fine restaurants.   And here is the elegant outfit that I wore this cloudy evening - temp around 58 degrees.   You can see the periwinkle blooming on the bank behind the stone wall and some of my plants out of winter storage.

You're outfit is fabulous!  (or as Christian would say, "fierce!")  You always inspire me.  I was near Ashville over the weekend.  I went to a church conference at Kanuga which is in Hendersonville.

Terry, as Ricardo used to say - You look MARVELOUS Darling!  I really like the jacket.  Haven't got that pattern - tell me why you liked it? Just cut out my second 'Now' and finished up my Loes Hinse Cruise Crop's last night.  And it's going to 78, rainy and humid today.  What just a few miles and a few feet in elevation can make in temperature.

Terri - I LOVE your outfit - very chic!!  I love the looks of your jacket.  I really "must" make another!!  I rotate the now pattern back and forth - never quite getting to cutting one out!  You are my inspiration.  The shoes are magnificent - I have a passion for shoes but don't purchase many these days - just boots!!

Terri - I love your outfit.  Your fabrics go together so well and I the shoes are fantastic.  Is the restaurant dowtown?  The last time we were in Ashville we had dinner at a place that looked like that but I can't remember the name.  You are an inspiration to us all.

Terri, I checked out the website of the restaurant you visited and was reminded of a friend of mine who used to live here in VT and built a summer home in Asheville (she is a horse person and winters in FL).  She used to say how much Asheville reminded her of Burlington (VT).  Funny thing, I opened my email this am and found an message from her, telling me about the cheetah attack at a wildlife sanctuary in FL we had visited a few years ago.  It's been awhile since we've been in touch.

I love your outfit - I have a question which is not meant at all to be judgmental as I really don't know.  Was the jacket front designed to be shorter than the back?  Or did you cut it that way to increase the visual length of the legs?  Whichever, it is very flattering!

Terri,

Let me echo the sentiments of your long list of admirers. Your outfit is perfect; as was the one at the arboretum. You have really  coordinated your wardrobe with the Cutting Line and SW patterns with your luxury fabrics. Great job! laugh

LyndaC,

Thanks for the info. about the fabric store. I have heard about Sirs, but didn't know if that was the shop that Alice (from Ala) was talking about. I bet it was. Anyway, thanks for answering. laugh

Well thank you all - I must be doing something right here!   Yes I love those shoes - got them from one of my TNT eBay sellers while I still lived in MD.  They have a comfortable 2" heel and the beige is corded suede -  looks like corduroy.

Cafe Azalea is maybe 2 years old - just west of the big VA hospital complex on US 70.   It is very much like the Corner Kitchen (one of your's and my favs in Biltmore Village)  in that they have different menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner.   They both strive to have mostly local food on the menu, supporting local agriculture and organic farmers.   Price points are about the same - both good values.    We like to attend the special fixed price dinners they both do from time to time.   Check their websites.   I slept in this morning because of the 5 different wines served with the 5 courses, but no headache  coffee

Martha - Here's the illustration and the line drawing.   The sides of the jacket dip because it's a square.   I've got several more of this one planned as shirts out of the pima cotton shirtings I bought from Louise.    It's a good wardrobe builder.     One of the fabrics is a black and white tiny stripe and I'm making the collar and stand out of a white striped pima.   They both feel like silk.

Terri,
That picture is worth a million words. I didn't get that pattern because the line drawing didn't strike me. But seeing the way it dips down on the sides and drapes gracefully makes it interesting. I'm going to Worcester next week for the expo. You can bet that I'll be buying that one when I see Louise.

Diana, thanks for posting that.   I hadn't thought about it but you're right.   Just to let you all know,  I  shortened View A by 2 inches.
