I have a nice gold & cream large houndstooth (75% acrylic, 25% wool) that I'd like to turn into an indoor/light outdoor swing jacket.

Because of its large pattern I'd rather not chop it up too much, instead I'd prefer to make it into something with a nice flowy look to it.
So far, I found two patterns, McCall 5479 http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M5479.htm?tab=jackets_coats&page=2
and McCall 5528  http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M5528.htm?tab=jackets_coats&page=1  .

I'd have to modify both a bit, but that's OK. I like their back pleats. My question is, are there others any of you might be aware of, that may also have a softly falling back, somewhat like these two?

Much thanks for any suggestions!

I've made mccall 5276 twice, it's a nice pattern.  It's somewhat cropped (ends right at the waist), though, so if you want to wear it for warmth you'll need to add to the bottom.

Vogue has some great jackets you might want to look at.
v8404 - my sister has put in a request for this one in a really light wool. The shorter jacket looks pretty nice.

v8300 I've made view C of that one, it's got a nice shape.

I was about to suggest V8300! I made it last September. It turned out adorable. The back width was really too much for my build, so I pinched it with a box pleat. Never got around to taking pictures of this one. I wore it as soon as I finished it and then it got too cold here and the jacket was put away for next Spring  Undecided I really ought to take it out and photograph it.

A couple more ideas. I'm currently making Simplicity 3631 (I'm lining mine) and it might work for you because it has large pattern pieces. You could add a back pleat before attaching the collar, and leave out the belt.
A blogging friend recently made Simplicity 4082. It is out of print but still available on the Simplicity website. Here's Helen's result. She used a large-patterned fabric as well.

I have a very similar fabric in black/white and I've been going through the same process you have.  I still haven't made up my mind but it's great to have some more input!

Have you looked at Indygo Junction?

Easy Silhouette Jacket - IJ741

One Button Swing Topper - IJ725

Simple Swing Jacket - IJ700

I've not made one, but Sewing with Nancy did a whole segment on Indygo Junction once upon a time.

I've also made the McCall's 5276 jacket and it's really adorable. You can easily add length. Also, I believe Folkwear has an authentic swing coat pattern that would work really well with that fabric.

Have you seen SE50-9113 at http://www.evadress.com/9113.html?  I am using this pattern as the centerpeice of my SWAP 2008, would love to have someone else test the swing jacket  Grin

I attached a jpg of the pattern picture, must read instructions on how to embed in a message.

Regards,
Elle

Love, love love the Evadress pattern - especially the fact that a 36/30/39" body is a size 18!!!! Grin

Thanks so much for all your replies (what a bunch of enablers you  all are - I'll be sewing till next Christmas to fulfill all your suggestions!).

I also found this useful little discussion from March '07: Popular "retro" swing toppers & cropped jacket styles

Hmmm - the link appears to be working in preview - so off it goes to the rest of you!
