500 Errors -affecting everyone

I'm aware of the constant 500 errors, and am trying to find out what is causing them.  I might be forced to put us into maintenance mode to prevent data loss or corruption.

This is being caused by an incompatibility between the forum version, and the recent php upgrade. 


The new upgrade will fix it, but it's not ready yet.  However, as this will continue to happen until that is ready, I will look into the possibility of changing us over to their beta release if it's more stable.  At least one admin has claimed he has done it, and found it much less likely to crash.


Either way, the release candidate is under development.  Last I saw, it was reported to be about 95% finished, and they were already testing for bugs.


I should have more news by the end of next week.  In the meantime, let's all take the errors and failed pages as a hint to enjoy our Thanksgiving with family and friends. :)

I'm going to try to switch us to the beta version of the upgrade.  It will probably take me most of the week, but once we've made the switch I'm hopeful it will be more stable.

There will still be issues, and we don't know what kind of bugs they may yet find, so it's not ideal.  But, this is not going to go away, so I believe it's the best course of action right now.


Hopefully, the finishing touches will all finished soon, and (let's all cross our fingers) changing later to the official release won't break anything.


I'm still feeling very reluctant, because I absolutely do not want to end up with a second "dead" database with everyone forced to start over like we did with this one.  :o

This time it's not our host's fault. They updated on time, but the SMF development team is waaay behind schedule with the forum upgrade.

Okay; I'm working on it....

The beta release is being updated daily.  I won't be able to keep up with it, so we will always be behind a bit.  I need to verify that changes will be retroactively applied before taking this leap.  I already know that using a beta release for a live site is very much frowned upon, so asking for support if it goes wrong will not win me any points with dev team.

That said, I do have it ready to install, and will put the latest version into another sandbox for now, just to make sure it's working on our current configuration.

Then I'll work on making copies of this database so we can revert if upgrading doesn't go as planned.

Meantime...thank-you, everyone, for the patience so far.  I promise I've checked everyday waiting for this upgrade to be ready, and the only reason I'm even thinking about installing the beta is because of all these errors.  I'm just trying to make sure we're able to continue staying afloat while all these compatibility issues are ironed out.  If all goes well, there really is a much nicer forum -with lots of new features- at the end of the rainbow. :)

This is where it gets a bit crazy.  I'll be installing the beta into a sandbox, and using a copy of our live database to see what happens.  It will slow the site down even more ( :( ) but should give me an accurate read of what will happen.

I already know there are bugs in the beta.  Alerts aren't working, and a few other things are still works-in-progress.  But I hope it will solve our compatibility issues and be more likely to work well for us.

Watch this space for news and updates; I'll do my best to keep everyone informed as I go along.  As always, if things go wrong I'll get us fixed up again as soon as I can.

Alerts? Is the” you have a new msg” an alert that wont work in Beta?  Just means I will need to check my SG Msg box instead of ignoring until you tell me I have a message.  But I would like to know I need to do that.

This changeover may not be necessary at all.  I just discovered a mistake I made a few weeks ago that might be the cause of many of our problems.

I've fixed it now.  Let's see if everything doesn't run a whole lot better now.

Today saw several "500" errors, and a several more "internal server errors."  In each case, refreshing the page resolved the error.

Hmmmmmmmmm………….


LyndaC has said she has trouble receiving them, too, so that's two of you.  I've looked at it on her behalf so many times I'm seeing it in my dreams, but I'll look again tomorrow to see if I can figure out what's going on.

Is anyone else not receiving notices?  I know the alerts are broken in the beta version, but this one hasn't been changed in any way since early this year, so if it's not working it has to be related to the server updates.
