Skirt A Month
« on: February 01, 2012, 12:32:30 PM »
I'm fairly new to SG, but as no-one else has put this up, I did.  I probably won't make quite this many, but I thought it might be nice to have a place to show off our skirts, even if not many people keep up the pace.

Lynn,
I'll play...a skirt is the one actual garment I've made so far this year. I find skirts the easiest thing to fit, and wear them a lot so I may actually be able to do 1 a month. I'll post a pic in the next day or 2. It is an easy,  simple skirt,

but the fabric is nice and loud!

Indeed if this is the skirts we here at SG have made this month, then it'd be a fun place to come and read.
I have actually made a skirt this month.

This was my version of the All Points skirt by Rhonda Buss. I made a mistake cutting out and needed to add a deeper waistband with elastic so it was long enough. I also didn't like the raw edges on my fabric so serged,  turned and stitched. I pressed it since the photo and have worn it.

This is  a  quiet  little thread, isn't it? Well, it will be good for me...I don't have the skills or need to make a jacket a month or pants a month, and I'm still struggling to learn to fit my upper body so as much as I'd like to I'd never complete a top or shirt a month. I find skirts easy to fit, and they can be quick to sew, so I think I could do 12 this year. I'm such a procrastinator, I'm only now getting around to posting the pics of my January skirt. I tried to take pics of me wearing the skirt, but couldn't get good ones so hanger pics will have to do.

This is a very simple skirt, that sews up quickly. I recommend it to other procrastinators...it is easy to fit and sew, and works in many fabrications. It is a simple, elastic waist straight skirt, with an attached tie. I made a separate tie belt instead, and should probably add belt loops:

It has cute pockets:

And I added a  lining:

Very cute skirts!  All of them.  I love skirts.  Haven't made one in January yet but do have one started.  So I'll post when I do get one done.

Thanks Ruthie & Jewels.

Ruthie--I really like your all points skirt. What do you wear it with?I've admired this skirt and the similar tablecloth skirt, but fear this may be too much fabric for me--I'm pretty short.

Laura, I wear the skirt with black tights and black knee length boots. On me the shorter length is just below the knee and the longer length just above my foot. I'm 5'5" with standard leg length. Because I added a panel before the draped area, the drop is not as exaggerated as if I had gone right from the waistband, so that might be an option for you as well. Basically the longer the straight panel from waist to hip, the shorter the hip to high hem will be, and therefore the shorter the drop will be. You still get the look of the original skirt but slightly less exaggerated.

Sewmodest--your skirt is as pretty inside as it is outside. I bet you feel wonderful wearing it. This is a quiet thread. I was so determinded to get 12 skirts sewn on schedule, but I'm already behind! February is a short month, right? I still have a few days left; if I hurry,  I can get the Feb skirt done!

Sewmodest, your skirt is really pretty, and I love the top that you have paired with it. With such a large family, I'm amazed that you can find time to sew. Good for you!

A little late, but here is my February skirt:

I copied it from a stretch velvet ready to wear skirt. Had some trouble getting the waist too fit: the copy was too big the first 2 times I made it (copying the elastic waist with darts was more difficult than I anticipated).
I love this fabric--a ponte di Roma from Hancocks. My Hancocks closed a year and a half ago, so I treasured this remnant I had left from a dress made earlier. The remnant had a big wedge cut out of the center, so I had to piece the back of the skirt:

Is anyone else making skirts? This thread is keeping me motivated to sew for myself, but I'd love to see more from others!

I like the way you pieced the back of the skirt.  Until I read your comments, I thought it was part of the original design.  Nice work.

It's a nice design detail, and a great way to eke out enough fabric for the skirt. Good job, Laura!

Laura, very very nice!

I was wondering about this thread last night!  I will be making skirts & tops but everything is on hold until this project at work is through this phase.  I've been working over 60 hours a week since Christmas and February has been 70 - 80 hours.  Only about 3 more weeks then I plan to make up for my lack of sewing and sleep and not exactly in that order.  I'm so ready to get my life back!

Thank you for all your kind comments. I'd like to try something more challenging, but I don't know that I'd get it done. This thread is keeping me a little productive with things I sew for myself.

Jewels...I look forward to seeing your skirts (and tops) when things quiet down for you.

Laura what kind of challenging projects did you have in mind?  Yes, I'm checking to see what everyone is doing on here while dinner is in the oven.  Then it's feed the dogs, then sign back into work.

Maybe I should cross-post my January skirt here?  I also have one cut for February but a lack of time has meant it's just in pieces and has been for about a month.

Here's the relevant blog post.

The second skirt is a jeans skirt with the same pattern, but I'm going to put zips in the back slits and hope I don't regret it.

Thanks Kathryn.  My skirt is sitting all cut but I need to get cracking on SWAP so it's taking a back seat right now while I churn out the things on my plan.  I'm curious to see the zippers too!

Here is my first skirt this year.  Had cut it out a while back but sewed it up earlier this month then had to take it apart & size it down.  So finally finished it.  Pattern is Simplicity 4041 view B without the pockets.

Lovely skirts everyone.
I virtually lost all contact with the internet for a while and had to change my provider, making up for lost time over this past week or so.
My contribution, made a couple of months ago. I made the pattern up from two different web sites and cut it out as I was working out the measurements - not recommended. Its a tiered skirts, but you can't see them very well.
Actually it came out better than I thought it would.

Great skirt - looks like it is lightweight and perfect for summer!  and I saw all that fabric you posted on the 6 pac.  wow!  I'm nowhere close to having that much although I'm getting a stash started that I need to attack and produce some outfits!
