A New Theme Installed :)
« on: August 17, 2018, 05:51:09 PM »
As this version of the board is on the way out, there are very few nice themes available for it now (without backing up a few steps), but I did find one I liked, that so far seems to work nicely.

You can try it out for yourself by going to your profile > modify profile >  look and layout> current theme (change) > sketchzoo

"Preview" will load the page you're on in that them" but you have to choose "use this theme" if  you want to change the whole board to use it.

Let me know whatcha think :)

Id like to try it out without making a commitment, after all the old theme works for me.  So if I choose the new theme, can I change it back?

To my taste ‘sketchzoo’ is a bit angular, also the large personal profile space in the left column means the messages are very spread out and there will be a lot of scrolling.

But then I’m not much of fan of change - long practised visual skills with using the old theme and knowing at a glance where to find things !
Does this bring you joy, calm, confidence  :D  if not, try something else.

I'll try out the new scheme.  I find some change exciting, some of it is downright frightening.  I will give this a try... The gray and black seems a bit stark right now.  I will say that I am wearing bright royal blue and electric blue today...  Thanks for the option!

Where's the option to view all posts since most recent visit? Am I missing it? I found it.

Also, I too wish there was some color to the layout. It looks modern but stark.

P.S. Instead of the conversation bubbles on the Home page, is there a sewing-related image available instead?

Not a fan of the stark contrasting black here, either.  Is the color changeable to something a little less severe?

I'm sure there are other themes that will work for us; so I'll keep my eyes open.  I'm sure there will be a number of new themes available for the upgrade a month or so after it's ready.  That always kickstarts everyone's enthusiasm. :)

I found the contrast between the large black and white areas to be a bit of a strain on my aging eyes.  I'd vote for somwhat less contrast if I have a choice.

The contrast is really stark; I'd prefer something with a little bit of color somewhere.  I guess the "pop" of the orange buttons on the posting window is right on trend, but overall it's just too harsh for my tastes.

Later this evening I'll try to cruise by their website, and see if they have any more themes for this version of the board.  One of the more common problems with themes is there are folks who love to build 'em, but aren't so crazy about updating & maintaining them after -they'd just rather make more (I'm not sure I blame them, as I think it's more fun to make a new garment then to repair an old one) so it's a gamble whether they'll work nicely or just wreak havoc.

But I do have the sandbox for the merge all set up, so why not use it to test out a few things?  I don't mind the themes, as long as they work.  But I do not want to have to chase the bugs they can cause, especially when we already have a basketful.

Are we all seeing the same thing?

This is my third or fourth session reading the posts and I have grown to quite like the new colours. In fact, I am enjoying the bright avatars and in time it will be so much easier to recognise the individual posters simply from these.

Thank you DL!!

Maybe we're seeing the same thing, just having predictably different responses. :)  I'm one who loves color and doesn't enjoy the current gray trend, so this one just depresses me, despite the bits of orange and aqua.  I'm very sure others will be happy with it and if that's the majority, I'll cope.   And I see someone has posted a WOW while I was typing.  Maybe we aren't seeing the same thing after all.  Your screen capture looks gray and black to me on Chrome, with a couple of small bits of color.  ???

I agree,  sewvt.  I have shades of blue-ish gray with the bits of orange too.  Not at all what AnnetteB's screen shot looks like with the black contrasts and the aqua D for Dragonlady.
How do I do/get Sketchzoo?

But i'm just glad to have SG up and running no matter what color scheme I'm getting.  :)

I switched over to something like Annette shows but could never find a “show unread posts” button so I found my way back.  Maybe I can play with it again next time it rains here.

The yellow (or red) buttons under our avatars are interesting.  I like yellow just fine but it’s always dragging my attention away from the message content.  How important are those yellow buttons?

I'm seeing the same thing as you are, Annette.

When I spoke earlier of the stark black/white theme, I was speaking of the Home page only.

Martha, there is an Unread Topics button for each forum, found on the black border above each forum on the home page.

I think the "New Posts" might be what you're looking for. It's in the drop down menu under your avatar on the Home page.

Reading directions first works like a charm, doesn't it, Connie? I forget to do that 90% of the time! :D :D :D
I always seem to rush in while the angels are still busy reading the directions, to chop up that old maxim.

At least I'm in good company.

And P.S. , DragonLady, this new theme is growing on me. I like the letters for avatars that don't have photos. The colored backgrounds behind the letters make the page look pretty.

P.S. Instead of the conversation bubbles on the Home page, is there a sewing-related image available instead?

I've downloaded some images to try playing with.  TBH, I really like shades of grey -the button shop was almost entirely in them, because the buttons are so colorful the page could quickly look like a circus.  We don't really have that problem here, but this does point up just how much space there is on the page, and so a few sewing-related images would be a good thing, IMO.

On the default board, I once tried to replace the little windmills with other images, but was never happy with the effect because they were just too small.

Oh dear - I had another look as everyone is getting so excited.
As I don't post an avatar, my messages have a scruffy letter L beside them on a background of lime green - my most loathed colour - hurriedly backs away.

That is definitely not how I want to be represented to the world.
I had not realised how much my pleasure in visiting a discussion board is influenced by the visuals !

And I accept this is not something we are likely to agree on.
It's just going to be the case that some choices of theme will mean that some members choose to be less active.

No one has to use the new theme.  Just go to your profile (click your name in the upper right corner, if you're using Sketchzoo), > edit profile > account settings > look and layout > theme "default" > will put everything back exactly as it was.

No; right now we're just playing with all the buttons, because this board only has a few weeks to live.  It's a good time to try out new things, and see what works best for everyone, but I'm not going to make any changes that everyone is forced to live with.

Quote

It gets complicated with even ONE extra theme:

If a theme stops working, nothing will load for anyone, even those not using that theme.  Which means the board won't load for me, so I can't work on it!

If a theme changes the positions of various links & functions (which Sketchzoo does), we have to make multiple sets of instructions for how to do all kinds of things.

The themes are all 3rd party plugins, and when they die for whatever reason, support for them is rarely available.  Even the "premium" themes aren't usually updated every time the board is, so one day they're guaranteed to stop working, but there's no real bright line way to tell when that will happen or under what circumstances.

At this point, we're just playing.  If I ever do install what I would consider a custom theme, it will be something sewing related that will overwrite the main (default) theme.  But honestly, I'm loathe to do that because it has so much potential for causing headaches.  Since day 1, I've always chosen the safer or more secure options over the fancier ones, because I'd rather have a plain board that works well than a fancy one that is always blowing up the error logs -and filling my inbox with bug complaints.

I am noticing with the newer, and to my eye, stark, theme that I have trouble discerning where roday’s Posts are.  It seems that the bold font isn’t bold enough to pick out the “today” and the time of the most recent post.  I will admit that I’ve not had a full vessel of coffee yet!

Nice to know it isn't just me!  I really do prefer the default theme, myself.  I know where everything is, can tell what's new at a glance, find it's easier on my eyes, and just more comfortable overall.

I, for one, really hope that you decide to keep the default theme... being able to have the slightly lower contrast of the blue/grey background for the text makes the site very readable. My eyes find black text on bright white background (on a computer) to be headache inducing.

I remember reading a lot about web design back in 1999 when I first built a website, and that was when I first learned that our eyes see "differently" when they look at an illuminated surface like a monitor, and that the high contrast that works well in print media is not ideal in computers, and that we see more clearly when there is a subtle color that lowers the contrast. While web design has changed a great deal since then, our human eyes have basically stayed as they were prior to the ubiquity of computers
