This year is flying by!

I still haven't made as many changes to things as I would've liked, and the changeover to the subscription model is still behind schedule in some aspects; but as always, I have been busy working behind the scenes here.

As many of you know, I attempted to merge the databases for SG Reloaded & SG Classic into one, but it didn't work.  There are pretty big differences between the two, and the merge failed.  It's not entirely impossible; it's just beyond the scope of what I'm able to do at this time.  So for now, SG Classic will stay where she is.  I'm still keeping our options open; at this time it appears the whole board will eventually be made into a text archive...but I haven't entirely resigned myself to that just yet.

Our hosts have planned a php upgrade in a few days, so the site will be down for a few hours while that is being done.  SGR's language files will be updated, and she just might start working a bit better for those of you with mobile devices. I may do a trial run, just to make sure nothing explodes; but I really don't anticipate any problems.

The SMF upgrade is still in beta, but looks very good so far.  Honestly, I'm tempted to switch us over just because doing so might eliminate some of the headaches we're having with bugs and glitches; and I LOVE some of the new features.  I do know a few admins have already made the switch, but I'm still concerned about data loss if anything goes terribly wrong with it.  The only estimate for the first release candidate is "this fall", but I'm keeping my eyes open for any news or updates on that front.

In other news, I'd still like to move us to another hosting company.  I'm still feeling a bit "once bittern, twice shy" after the debacle with the last one I thought was so promising, but it's still one of the things crowding the top of my to-do list.

The SWAP contest will remain open to all again this year; no subscription neccesary.  In the next weeks I'll be working out the details of how it will work with regards to posting photos, and am trying to find a better alternative to our current gallery that is less clunky and maybe a bit more integrated with the rest of SG.

Speaking of the Gallery, there are other 3rd party plugins that I would like to purchase for our site.  Now that we've switched to the subscription model, it's a very real possibilty, as I'll not only be able to afford the licensing for the plugins, but will be able to keep a small budget for the inevitable tech support and upgrades. It just depends on how many subscribers we get -and keep.  The more we have, the fancier we can afford to be.

There have been lots of great suggestions bandied about for the future; and I'm hoping to be able to implement a few.  I'd like to see us be able to add social groups for foreign languages, maybe add more contests or sew alongs, and maybe even make some cosmetic changes to give SG an updated sewing-related theme.

Well, I edited-ed this a few times before being ready to post, but forgot to "copy" my changes, so I've lost them.... I'll leave it be for now, but I'll be back later with some more comments about some of these points.  As always, I'm open to comments, questions and suggestions. :)

Thank you for keeping us informed.  I for one did not realize how much work you do on SG.  I'd like to add my thanks for that too.
