Nicely done, Marnie!

Code: [Select]

Code: [Select]

Code: [Select]
[url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/147378064@N05/]Jacky Fraser[/url], on Flickr

When you paste the Flickr code, it shows up in four lines in the editing window.  The first two are what you need to display the image and have the required link-back to Flickr.  The second two lines can be deleted, as they supply two additional links, and are not required by Flickr.

So paste the code and delete the last two lines after you paste them in your reply.

Give it a try!!!!

Hmmm. Here we go again. This Sandbox is an inspired idea for slow learners like me!
[...]
Oh dear, bed time beckons in the UK so I'd better sleep on this one!

BTW, my theory is that anyone who can sew can do this computer stuff.  You just need directions that work for you!

See you "your tomorrow" ;) ;D

To say it another way, yes, you can delete the extraneous information from Flickr if you would like, Marniesews. Just make sure you include the portion between the first
Code: [Select]
[img] and the
Code: [Select]
[/img]  brackets.

So if you took this string (from your post)

Code: [Select]
[url=https://flic.kr/p/QWZREn][img]https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2054/32127504093_d47d942f39_n.jpg[/img][/url][url=https://flic.kr/p/QWZREn]#028 view of back joint[/url] by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/147378064@N05/]Jacky Fraser[/url], on Flickr[img][/img]
and deleted everything but this

Code: [Select]
[img]https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2054/32127504093_d47d942f39_n.jpg[/img]
you'd get this:

HTH,
Kathryn

P.S. I didn't see Lisa's posts before mine. Now you have a lovely redundancy of information!  ;D

Karen, it's in Profile>>Modify Profile>>Look and Layout . Scroll down until you see the box you can check to see the most recent posts first.  Be sure to scroll to the bottom of that page to click the Change Profile button before leaving that page.

I got into SG Classic and saw this post from Lisa on making clickable links, and thought I'd carry it over here because it is helpful information. Hopefully all of the formatting and links still work. Fingers crossed!

Quote
There are 3 ways to make words in your post be a "clickable" link.  Two of them will make the link show only the words that you want them to be (instead of the whole web address).

1. Start with the words you want to be "clickable." This is probably the best method!  ;) Highlight the words in your post that you would like to be "clickable" as a link (In this example, we'll use the word "this."), then click the "insert hyperlink" button (It's the one that looks like a globe w/ a piece of paper in front of of it--2nd from the left in the 2nd row--it will pop up its name if you put your cursor over it).  This will put BBCode tags around your text...it will look like this:
Code: [Select]
"this" Note that if you want the quotations marks to be part of the link, you highlight those too...if you don't highlight them they won't be part of the link (I didn't want them to be part of the link in my example).  Then put your cursor between the "[url" and the "]" before the word "this", then insert an equal sign and the web address the link should point to.  So if you were going to link to yahoo, you'd add the address like this:
Code: [Select]
"this" which will yield "this".  If you didn't want quotation marks around your link, you'd take the quotation marks out :
Code: [Select]
this, which would get you a link w/out the quotation marks: this

2. Start w/ the BBCode Tags. Click the "insert hyperlink" button (It's the one that looks like a globe w/ a piece of paper in front of of it--2nd from the left, 2nd row--it will pop up its name if you put your cursor over it).  You'll get: , then put your cursor after "[url" and before the "]".  Add "=ADDRESS" there.  Then between the brackets"][" put in the name of the thing you want it to be called.  So your link would be:

Code: [Select]
search engine
which would yield: search engine

3. Just type the url or web address.  It's not pretty, but it works...  For instance, www.google.com. There is no special code I've added to that.  This board  recognizes that it's a web address, and it is clickable.  But it's not very "pretty" and on some boards if the web address is a long one, it can make some people have to scroll back and forth to read the posts on the rest of the page.  So you'll want to try to avoid using this method.  But if one of the others doesn't work for you, this will!  Pretty is good (so you'll want to try one of the other methods), but posting is better(so use this one if the others are not working for you)!! ;D

Note that whichever way you start out, the result is the same—a clickable link!  If you want to practice making links before you put them in one of your regular posts, be sure to try them out in the Sandbox—if you have trouble, that's the place to ask questions, so we can see what you've done and give you any hints you need!  Have fun posting links! ;D

Effie, with an iPad, you can post photos that you have on a photo hosting site such as Flickr, since that site gives you the URL (web address) of the image itself. Even so, highlighting that entire URL can be challenging on an iPad, which likes to select a few words to highlight, not an entire string.

On the iPad, when trying to post photos from other sites like 'blogs, etc, I don't know a way to get the URL of the image itself, something that is done by right-clicking on a PC or CTRL-clicking on a Mac. Usually, when you press your finger on a photo on a website, you get a "Copy" option, not "Copy Image Location" or "Copy Image URL", which is what is needed.

As far as I know, there's no way to directly upload a photo (via Attachments) from an iPad. At this point, we're not supposed to use the Attachments option anyway until some of the bugs have been worked out.

Will wait for the bugs to be sorted.. usually it's  a case of going to manage attachments and picking a picture from your photo library and it's done.

I tried to insert a photo using the technique that worked last night but I left in the [url] and it didn't work. I went back to modify it and repeated the process being careful to delete everything following the [/img] but still nothing appeared.

Now I really look a twerp! I'd like to delete the failing attempts and try again but I've not spotted how to delete a post, only to modify it. Can someone advise please?

Hi Marnie, we can't delete our posts. It is possible to go back in and edit something that's already posted, but I think you know how to do that already. If not, just say and someone will explain the process.

Marnie, no worries about the many failed posts. No need to delete them. The Sandbox is here for trying, and trying again if necessary.

To figure out what to delete, just go back and re-read the posts that Lisa and/or I wrote to you, and you'll see what to delete on that huge Flickr string. Basically you delete everything except what's between  the
Code: [Select]
[img] and the
Code: [Select]
[/img]
So delete everything before that first
Code: [Select]
[img] and after the second
Code: [Select]
[/img]
To reiterate what I wrote to you:

So if you took this string (from your earlier post)

Code: [Select]
[url=https://flic.kr/p/QWZREn][img]https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2054/32127504093_d47d942f39_n.jpg[/img][/url][url=https://flic.kr/p/QWZREn]#028 view of back joint[/url] by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/147378064@N05/]Jacky Fraser[/url], on Flickr[img][/img]
and deleted everything but this

Code: [Select]
[img]https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2054/32127504093_d47d942f39_n.jpg[/img]
you'd get this:

Keep trying! You'll get the hang of it! :)

Yes, Marniesews, that's a link, not an image. An image will end in .jpg , usually

I don't subscribe to Google photos, so I can't test an image, and when I right click on your image there, I get only link options, not the option to "Copy Image URL" or "Copy Image Location". From what I see under the Sharing options on that site, only the links are shared, not the actual photos.

Just realised what it was - I was deleting all after the .jpg filename but not the section before it! Must have done that the first time but had forgotten by the next day. I did read through it again but sometimes you only see what you're expecting.

Thanks for your patience. Kathryn

My pleasure, Marnie.  Happy to help.

Kathryn

ETA: If you want your photo to link back to Flickr whenever someone clicks on it and still have the photo only posted here, you have to leave more of that long string in. If you'd like to do that let me or Lisa know.

Deleting everything before and after the "img" tags, though is the most straightforward and simplest way to do it.

Hi Mary V, here you go:

Posting Photos on SG

From a website:
1. Go to the website and find the photo you want to share here.
2. Right-click on that photo if using a PC. If using a Mac, Control-Click.
3. For Internet Explorer: select Properties from the drop down menu. In the middle of that window you will see URL: http://. That is the beginning of the URL that you need to copy and paste here. Be sure to copy the whole long string of code.
For Mozilla, right-click on the photo and select “Copy Image Location” from the drop-down menu.
4. Come back to SG and position your cursor in your post. Paste the copied information.
5. Highlight that entire string of code that you just pasted and click on the little picture icon at the top of your post.
6.  When you then click Post or Preview, the picture will appear within your post.

Using a photo-hosting site like Flickr:

1.  Go to Flickr and click on the photo that you want to share here. That opens the photo in its own window

2. In the lower right hand corner, click on the little curvy arrow (the Share This Photo arrow).

3. In the box that opens, Under "CODE" select "BB code" on the right side just above the little window that shows the code.

4. Select the photo size you want. "Small" or "Medium" work good here.

5. Highlight the code in the box (if it's not already highlighted), copy it, come back here, and paste that code into your post. (Note: You do not have to do anything else (like clicking on the little picture icon). Just paste the code that you copied from Flickr)

6. When you select "Post" or "Preview" you will be able to see your photo in the post.

Using an iPad with Flickr:

1. Click on the Safari icon and go to your Flickr account.  Do not use the Flickr app. The Photostream page should open up.

2. On the Photostream page, select the photo by double clicking it. The photo will open in a new page.

3.  In the lower right hand corner, click on the little curvy arrow (the Share This Photo arrow).

4.  In the box that opens, Under "CODE" select "BB code" on the right side just above the little window that shows the code.

5.  Select the photo size you want. "Small" or "Medium" work good here.

6. Next put your finger in the box with the long string of code until you get the pop up option to Select All.  Choose it. Then select Copy.

7.  Come back here and Paste the code into your post. (Note: You do not have to do anything else [like clicking on the little picture icon]. Just paste the code that you copied from Flickr)

8. When you choose Preview or Post the photo will appear.

Using an Attachment with a Mac when the photo is on your Desktop or in iPhoto:

To post photos without using a photohosting site, you have to use the "Additional Options" selection shown in the lower left corner below the Reply posting box where you type the text of your post.

To attach a photo to a post when the photo is saved on your Mac or in iPhoto:

1.  Click Additional Options below the posting box
2.  Click the "Choose File" oval after the word Attach.
3.  Now you must browse through your Mac to find the photo. When you have found that photo file, click on it.
to get a photo that is on your desktop or in a folder, you'll see the file name right there.
to get a photo that is in iPhoto, you must scroll down the left side of the browsing window that opens when you click "choose file".
Scroll down until you see "Photos" under the Media section.  That opens the iPhoto photo collection and you can find your photo there.
4.  Once you have clicked on the photo or the file name, it is ready to be attached. Just complete typing your post and when you click "Post" the photo will appear beneath your post. The photo will not appear when you click "Preview" (do not choose that option or you will have to reattach the file), only when you "Post".

There is a limitation on the size of the photo that you can put as an attachment. It's a huge pain of a restriction, too. The file size has to be smaller than 192 kB.  You should check the size of your photo before you try to attach it. In iPhoto, click on the photo and its data appears in the lower left corner. You'll see its file size there. Just make sure it's smaller than 192 kB.

If it's larger than 192 kB, you need to change its size and save it to the desktop. That way the original photo is unchanged in iPhoto.

To resize a photo using iPhoto:

1. Open iPhoto
2. Select the image and double click on it to open the editing box.
3. Click on Email below the photo
4. Choose the size smaller than 192kB (Medium  usually works best)
5. Click Compose.
6. Next the email window will open.  Save that photo that shows up there by right-clicking (ctrl-click) on it to bring up a drop down menu. You will then see the option to "Save Attachment". Click on that.
7. Now you can save that smaller photo to the desktop. Make sure it still has .jpg at the end of its file name. It will if you do not change the file name.
8. Now close the email window and select "don't save" when prompted to save the email itself as a draft.

Now that the smaller photo is saved on your desktop, you can follow Steps 1 through 4 in How to attach a photo to your post that I outlined above.

To insert a photo that is on a website or a 'blog, just open that site in a separate window, find the photo and drag and drop it into your Reply posting window here on SG. Highlight the code that appears in your posting box and click on the little picture icon above the box. Finish typing your post. The picture from the website or ‘blog will appear  right within the text of your post (not as an attachment as you did with photos from your Mac desktop or iPhoto) when you hit “Preview” or “Post”.

The above is a "short" how-to post photos. We will be reestablishing the FAQ section as the site gets more full-blown and stops having error glitches. Lisa is working on carrying those FAQ topics over from the original site, so stay tuned.  :)

In the meantime, is there a way to save a specific reply - thinking of #55 unsurprisingly?

I've copied and pasted the content to a doc to save on my hard disk but I wondered if it's possible to download in some format? That would be useful sometimes for any single reply with particularly detailed content.

Marnie, there is a Print tab in the lower right corner of each topic page, but unfortunately it will print the entire topic. Clicking on it does give you a clean view of the topic (no avatars, etc), so you may want to use it for your cut/paste needs.

I've always just used Cut/Paste into a Word document for what I want to save from SG, just as you are doing.

Just checked that out, Kathryn.

It does allow you to 'Print to File' and save it as a pdf as well but then you can't edit out any bits you don't want if it's a long thread. Saving in a word processing programme of some type is usually going to be the best option, I suspect. Thank you.

I don't do this at this time, but thought it was worth mentioning anyway. If you want to save a list of links in a word doc instead of copying all of the actual text over to your document, you can put a link to the specific post that holds the information that you want to link back to. In this case, something like:

I've always been gunshy of losing information that's kept online, so I always cut/paste into a Word document. Our recent experience with losing the other SG site (hopefully only temporarily) made me happy that I've always done it that way. Plus I weed out extraneous comments and keep only the meat of the topic when I compile that Word document. But, as with all things on SG, to each her/his own!  :)

Maybe a little too big--You definitely wouldn't want it any larger!

The way to make it smaller is to add a width limitation inside the opening img tag.  Since this is a landscape orientation image, we suggest you use 500 pixels (for a portrait orientation, you'd use 350). What you will add is a space, then "width=500", like this:
Code: [Select]
If I add that to your image, the code looks like this:
Code: [Select]
[img width=500]https://postcardsfromthestillroom.files.wordpress.com/2017/03/img_2933.jpg?w=700&h=&crop=1[/img] which resolves like this:

Notice that if you click on the image, you get the larger version, and click it again to see the smaller.

Give it a try!

Lisa

Etc: spelling ::)

That's really helpful to know. Thanks for asking DaisyChain.  :)
Pfaffs, Berninas and Jukis - so much fun! If only I had time I might stick some rhinestones on them that have fallen off the dresses! :D

Hi JuneBug!

I went to the page whose url you put between img tags: http://pin.it/z7Oy7Im

and then clicked on the image, which gave me a page which only showed the image: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/d7/da/c7/d7dac7068cc616e83fe4a6cecf7c5b4f.jpg

Then I right clicked on the image and selected "Copy Image Address" in my browser's (Chrome) drop down menu.  Most browser's will have similar options.

Then I came back here and put img tags where I wanted the image (first button in the second row), and then pasted the Image Address between img tags:

Code: [Select]
[img]https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/d7/da/c7/d7dac7068cc616e83fe4a6cecf7c5b4f.jpg[/img]
which resolves as the image we want (when I tried a preview of the post, but too large...so I added a width limitation to the opening img tag.

Since this is a portrait orientation image, I used 350 pixels (if it had been a landscape orientation image, I would have used 500 pixels)  What needs to be added at the end of the opening img tag is a space followed by "width=350"  as follows:

Code: [Select]
as follows:
Code: [Select]
[img width=350]https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/d7/da/c7/d7dac7068cc616e83fe4a6cecf7c5b4f.jpg[/img]which resolves as follows:

Now we'll see if Pinterest will break the link...

HTH,

Lisa

The image linked from pinterest is still holding. BTW, click on the image and you'll get the original large image, which is handy for checking stitch details (for example).  Click again to get back to the smaller displayed image.
