Do you see what I see?
« on: January 02, 2011, 06:57:10 AM »

100_1989 by Elaray, on Flickr

This is a blouse I just finished.  Every time I look at it, my eye is immediately drawn to what I consider a problem.  I want to know if anyone else sees the same problem I see.  Please take a look at the the photo a tell me if there is anything you would change.  If no one else sees the problem, I'll go ahead a wear the blouse without any changes.

I don't want to influence you with any more information, but I will reveal the problem when I get a few responses.

Thanks!

I've looked at the largest size photo on your Flickr site and see nothing unacceptable.

There's a slight wrinkle visible where the bib is sewn in but I think that's just in the photo - the fabric looks a bit shiny which exaggerates this sort of thing. Nice topstitching, good collar...

Wear it!

After very close scrutiny, I will take a guess....is the bottom button/buttonhole a smidge too high?  Only another sewist would see it and only after you pointed it out.  Wear it confidently, it is a lovely shirt.

Boy, I don't see anything - the button would've been my guess - but it's also on a hanger - that's bound to change things.  WEAR IT - it looks great.  I know that I'm my own worst critic.  CO is continually saying - aren't you ever happy with anything you've made?? ::) ::)  While we strive for perfection sometimes we take it to extremes -  The blouse looks classy - what are you going to pair it with?

If it's not the bottom button, is there a tiny bit of bubbling at the curve of the bib?  As the others have said, I had to really scrutinize.  There is nothing glaring and it could be just the way it was hanging on the hangar.

You know, when I look at how things I used to buy fit me/looked on me, I wonder why I don't expect the same quality from RTW that I do from my own garments.  Really, it's amazing how we can obsess if we make it!

It looks lovely and super wearable.
I noticed a little bubbling at the curve of the bib, but only after you begged for scrutiny.
And, maybe that is just the way it looks in the photo.

my 2 cents- wear it and enjoy it!

I agree with everyone, Elaray

Possibly the bottom button could be moved a smidge downwards. Maybe there's a tiny bubble in the bib stitching. But it IS shiny fabric; the photo is overexposed because the fabric is dark, and I would just wear it and see what you think after a normal day of moving around etc.

Thanks to you all!  I noticed the bottom button when I hung up the blouse for the photo, but that isn't the problem I was talking about.  To me, the buttons are too big!   They are as wide as the band.  My eyes go right to the big honking buttons every time I look at the shirt!  But if other sewers didn't pick up on that, then  I will wear the blouse with confidence (after I lower that last button!  ;))

Elaray - after you disclosed what was bothering you, I jumped back up to the photo.  I suspect you are reacting to the shine of the buttons.  Bright or shiny objects advance to our notice.

I agree with the others - wear with pride.

The only thing I noticed, too, was that bottom button needing to be repositioned.  I think the size of the buttons is fine, as they look good with the proportion of the blouse.       It's beautiful and I hope you will enjoy wearing it.

I think that's a beautiful blouse, Elaray.

Is it silk? It seems that it must have been difficult to handle the fabric - you did a superb job!

PSHAW on the buttons being too large. I don't think so at all!

Lee, BFD. It looks lovely and if none of us, and I looked at magnification, could see a problem than forget about it and enjoy wearing it. No one is even going to look at it as closely as we all did.  Enjoy!

Holy cow! NO, the buttons look great.  Much better than tiny little things that just make no statement.  Enjoy your beautiful blouse!

The button size looks perfect to my eye. The proportion would have been off with a smaller button, IMO.

Elaray =  Look at Loes Hinse's  patterns for Casablanca and Italian blouses, and notice the  big buttons.   I'll bet those blouses sold for big bucks in her boutique, too.    ;)

I think that the buttons set off the blouse.

I know I'm kinda late to the party, just wanted to say that your blouse is beautifully sewn, Elaray. I too thought that the last buttonhole was placed a little too closely to the one above it, but if that wasn't the problem, then I don't see one.

Those buttons look fantastic to me....really pretty. I think you've got a good eye and great taste. I'm sure the blouse looks beautiful on. As Towanda says, the buttons set off the blouse.

Beautiful job.

I think the buttons look just fine. I did not think they are too large. All I was going to comment on is the wrinkling on the bottom, but others said it's from it being on a hanger.

Elaray, I hope you have worn your beautiful blouse half a dozen times at least since you posted the photo. It looks great, and as Towanda said, to my eye the buttons set off the blouse. Don't change a thing!

Elaray, those buttons make a great statement.  The blouse looks great!  I've made two bibbed shirts in my sewing life.  Whew.  Didn't feel like you'd climbed Mt. Everest when it was finished?   ;D

my first thought on looking at the photo: Someone hand made that?

It looks amazing, and no, I don't in the least think that the buttons are in any way too large.

Well done! Lovely shirt. Buttons are fine!

Yes and no, no and yes. . .it keeps flipping back and forth.  Which is a neat optical illusion in itself.

The first time, I saw a generic blouse with interesting buttons that shone to match the shimmery fabric.  Some time after someone mentioned it was a "bibbed" blouse, I suddenly saw it as a Western-wear style blouse, and then the buttons looked oversized compared to the usual tiny closures.  Both are true.  So I choose to see it as a generic blouse with buttons as a focal point.

Then again, my most recent blouse has 7/8" SHINY flower buttons and lots of 'em, so my eye may currently be skewed towards the showy. ;)
