LOL I was wondering why I couldn't post a reply. I have been hearing about this on different blogs for a while now. Gigi you really started something! I don't need jackets for work, but i do need a coat, making one now, jackets to make 'outfits' and a new raincoat. I don't know if I can make 12 jackets but it's worth a try. I haven't waded through the whole thread, so forgive me if this is redundant, but do knit cardigans count? What about vests, or do they all have to have sleeves?

I just want to remind all of you that the critique board is for ALL critiques - not just jackets. We're not going to have a board for jackets only - it will get hard to find the old threads, etc. If you can't find what you're looking for - ask - someone will help you.

Welcome to all new membesr that have signed up on the old board - It's amazing to see such excitement - will be interesting to see what happens in six months!! ;D ;D

Nancy K - the "rules" are pretty loose! So 'whatever' works for your definition of a jacket works for all of us!! Welcome to the sew along. I do suggest you go back to the first thread and read thru it - there are a lot of good ideas and..... ideas for MORE patterns!! ;D ;D I'm planning on using patterns and stash that I have and make a dent in that. Having said that - I'm off to MTilton site to order .... more fabric - but it's for pants - not jackets!! ;D ;D

I entered my coat into Pattern Review's Winter Wear contest. There are a lot of good entries, so I'm not asking you to vote for me, but I am asking you to vote. Vote here.

Today, I work on jacket #2! And tomorrow, back to work...

Karen, I love that vintage pattern, and I think red is the best color, so with some funky buttons it will be great. I am curious how it really looks, as the pattern seems so stylized to me.

Ann thank you for including the links to the Flickr group and the Critique thread on the first post. I'll remember to find them there.
It makes perfect sense to put fitting questions in the critique section of the board.

I love this lively discussion and following along closely - my compliments to the inspiring work we are already seeing.
I have made progress on the coat I'm sewing for DSD and taking pics along the way, but haven't had time to post or blog about it.

Great work Ladies!!

Yes, there really are some lovely entries!

I have a question. If you are making a single-thickness jacket, how do you handle the roll line for a folded back lapel? This one is puzzling me. I would like to tape the fold line, partly to pull it in over the bust area, but this is a double-sided fabric so I can't hide it.

Any ideas?

Did you check out AnnR's CS jacket - I can't remember 'what' she did - but that was all one thickness.

Nobody squawked when I said "hoodies", so IMHO, knit cardigans would count.

Andi it does seem stylized from look of pattern, don't know issue of VPM where I saw it but a lot less so there. Someone else I wsa talking to at pattern counter had bought it and was going to try in fleece first for that reason.

I would prefer an exaggerated stylized pattern, so I don't think I will like it if it is too blah. ;)

Hello again, I moving at a snail's pace! ;D Got my lining cut out finally and I'm working on my piping and get to use my piping ruler for the first time! I love it when I finally get to use those tools that get purchased.

Here in Tulsa, we are very lucky to have a nicer fabric store. They've just started an on-line presence http://store.theclothmerchants.com/ and I just got a flier this morning stating a sale!!!! I'm not associated with them in any way; just a happy customer wanting them to stay in business here. ;D ;D

I hate to be dense, Marcia, but I can't find Ann R's single-thickness jacket. I found her Claire Schaeffer couture jacket (that has a lining) here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/7370831@N07/sets/72157625253865870/

I can't remember who asked, but lol, Karla, love the use of "squawk". I think hoodies, cardigans, etc count. This is a sew-along - there is no contest. So it's pretty flexible.

You know, this must be an age thing, but my daughter *insists* on calling her hoodies "sweaters." To me a sweater is made from sweater fabric, and hoodies are made from sweatshirt fabric, but maybe the meaning is shifting, because she refuses to call her hoodies anything but sweaters. Or maybe that's just her. ;)

Lisa, I use the princess seam adjustment from Fit For Real People. This book is essential for fitting, in my opinion. :)

Thanks, Shams. I have that book and use it frequently. Glad to know you get your successes from it!

On the PR contest, one coat is called a "Trapeze" style, fingertip length (shown in teal).
I think I'd like to make one but hers was from Burda.
Anyone have ideas for a pattern for me?

Such wonderful coat/jacket/sweater/vest/sleeveless jacket/hoodie discussion. I am learning so much and am quite excited with this sew along.

KarenRoth, I love the idea of the red suits you!

Belinda, I loved all the fabrics from your local fabric shop.

Annette, glad you bit the bullet and bought lots of goodies; you certainly need more stash! ;D Of course the same thing could be said about me and many others.

Peg (I think) glad to know that the Shetland wool on FM fulls into soft wool. The prices and colors are great.

Shams - my mistake - I "thought" the CS jacket was a single fabric - but you're right it did have a lining. Sooo, consider the source, and we're back to square 1!! ;D ;D

Nancy K - are you the same NancyK that has the blog and has followed the SWAP in the past???

Just finished my first jacket with the Shetland wool from Fabric Mart that I "fulled" in my washing machine and dryer. It went from thin and scratchy to full and soft! Marci Tilton's Vogue pattern 8430 was for "pre-felted" wools and she gives great instructions. Since I don't have needle felting equipment yet I used pieces from the "assorted leather scraps" I also got from Fabric Mart for the trim. This was a fun and easy project to start my 12 jackets this year!

Wow, pstarbuck! Jan 2 and you've already accomplished a wonderful jacket that suits you so well! Love the look and the styling (that bracelet is great!). Congratulations.

Nancy: tickerfactory.com (look at the ticker in my siggy and I think there will be a link). They are so much fun! You put your own together.

Thank you, Coco! Off to look for it.

Love you gals! Truly do!

WOW we burned through the first thread in a hurry. LOL.
Just checking in to share my first "jacket". I used the SewingWorkshop's Joplin Pullover pattern. This was not my best sewing although I am tremendously pleased with the instructions for felled seams and how my Designer Ruby performed (just had to rub it in)

Great jacket Pat - - I have some 'fulled' wool pieces - am thinking one of them might be good for a jacket. Will have to check yardage and patterns!

Bev - the jacket looks good

Marciae it's light weight. Won't help me much during the next few weeks. But by spring I'll be glad to have it and summer I'll be wondering what I would do without it. It's a good basic color, although not summery and feels comfortable.

Pat, Great colorful jacket with your leather trims. You are on a roll......and I am still sitting on GO. I got some of those FM leather scraps also. I used some to trim a jacket for my sister a couple of months ago.

SDBev I went to your blog; your hilarious! ;D I like the hoodie a lot and am considering getting the pattern!

Well...I was going to work on piping but I forgot to pre-treat the cording. Duh. So now I'm waiting for it dry. ::)

Wow, you guys have been so busy! I'm ashamed that I've done nothing, but, in my defense, I was really sick on Friday and am only today feeling back to normal. Just in time to take care of a few household chores. >:(

My DBF is headed to the football convention next weekend which means mini Sewcation for me! My goal is to finish fitting and cutting out my lambskin jacket during the week so that I can stay in my jammies next weekend and sew, sew, sew. Funny, I haven't done a thing but feel like I've been working on it forever!

Thanks for all compliments. I do try to write my blog they way I talk. I'm not ashamed to admit a mistake, senior moment or brain 9hart. Hope you enjoyed!

GREAT jackets, Pat and Bev! You're sewing up a storm, and have the designer wear to show for it. :o)

Pat, you ENABLED me to buy some of that Shetland wool on Fabric Mart last night. I got the candy apple red. I can't wait to wash/dry it! It was really hard just to buy ONE piece. :o)

Thanks for the compliments on my jacket and I really like your Joplin jacket, Bev---I have that pattern in my lineup and will keep your blog entry on hand to refer to!

I think I may have changed Fabric Mart's policy on ordering the Shetland wool----early yesterday I put in an order that included 2 or 3 large pieces and then about 8 different half yard pieces (to see the colors and perhaps to use as felted "trims"). Well, later in the day I checked back and there was a notice that "at least a yard must be ordered" of any of the Shetland Wools-----oops, guess they didn't want to carry out all the big bolts to cut off a little piece---sorry FM! :-[

To all you who are still considering whether to order some of this wool to felt (Shams), I can only tell you that it "fulled" better than any I've ever tried and was a delight to behold afterwards--- And that Candy Apple Red will be fantastic, Annette! Peg (but I somehow got started being called "Pat" here so will answer to that too as long as it involves sewing!)
