Officially throwing my hat in the ring. Borrowing Lyn-J's simplified rules for documentation purposes.

I am working towards incorporating more variety and creativity. Although I love my slim T/Elle pants silhouette I want something with more personality, or some variety of layers to add interest.

Brown was one of the core colors of my last SWAP, so this moves nicely into my plan below. All subject to change and whim of course.

Neutral one BROWN:

Tan Jalie jeans IN PROCESS
Brown Elle pants DONE
Natural sweater (cardigan, or pullover)
Previously sewn: linen plantain tee DONE

Neutral two BLUE

Embroidered chambray tunic (M7360) IN PROGRESS
Pullever hoodie DONE
Blue jeans, purchased. or purchased skirt DONE

Print coral/blue/yellow jersey
Plantain tee DONE
tank DONE

Color 1 Purple wool double knit
pullover based on shirt no 1
skinny pants or leggings.
cardigan

Color 2 coral stretch jersey
Tank top/tunic MOSTLY DONE

ETA 4/2/18: I may take out the purple double wool and sub-in a second print for a Plantain tee. I may also add in a blue Jalie 2805 turtle neck. They would be super easy sews, and definitely needed in the day-to-day wear.

ETA 4/15/18: I may completely sub out one print (coral) and add black as a neutral, shunting the blue and purple to color status.  Would add a pair of black Jalie jeans and my pre-sewn cardigan, would have to take out the pre-sewn linen tee however.

Okay, Okay, I'll make a timeline.  ;D

Seriously, it is a good idea, thanks Ruthie!

I am starting one month at a time, I'll get the first 2 months planned out here.

Prior to SWAP I'll use purchased jeans, or a pair of pants already in stash.

November
finish muslin of Orla dress
Decide on a legging pattern for brown ponte
muslin Shirt no. 1 (would be smart to use a fabric that might coordinate with SWAP!)

That's enough for now. I'll sit down with my notebook and draw out a few plans. That always helps me think.

The tan twill, brown ponte, and a coral pink knit, that I think look fabulous together!

I'll start with the ponte, I have a few leggings patterns in the archives that should be fine.

Next should be to prep the twill for Jalie Eleonore jeans.

After that will muslin shirt no 1 (100 acts of sewing) to see how that will mesh with the coral knit.

November Timeline

Muslin Orla dress: Done. Bergh. I want to like this dress, but it does not like me! I should have known: gathers never flatter me, and the skirt is basically a rectangle. I am not a rectangle! No pics, I didn't even put the zip in. Not worth the effort.

That's OK. On to the ponte. I am actually wavering between leggings and another pair of Style arc Elles. I want the leggings, but think I'll actually get more wear from the Elles. I also don't want to waste fabric on a pattern I haven't tried before. I know the Elles will fit. However, I'll really have to plan out fabric/pattern combos for the remainder, so I can be sure to have more than 2 outfits!

I sat with my SWAP ideas this morning, and am severely bending the rules to be able to sew from stash only:

  • Considering brown and tan to be one neutral
  • Actually considering royal purple as a neutral
  • Squinting so that the 3rd print I want to include looks like a neutral

I'm only half kidding.

Alright, that was somewhat unreasonable. Here is what I've distilled it down to, from stash. Missing are my jeans and the sweater knit.

IMG_1313 by wendyr, on Flickr

I like this, there is a combination of cool and warm colors, but they don't seem to clash too much, I don't think. :) I will just have to get sewing and see.

The overall look will probably be a-line over slim. It is a look that suits me, and if I have a variety of top lengths then I can layer.

I edited my plan above, and assuming I have enough yardage and don't produce any wadders, I could have 11 garments pretty easily, all from stash.

Patterns I am considering:

Shirt no 1 from 100acts of sewing OR s 1366 top.
Elle pants style arc
Hoodie pattern from Craftsy class
Legging pattern from stash
McCalls 6844 cardigan.
Deer and Doe Plantain Tee.

Occurs to me that I need both work pants, and tops that can bridge the gap between work and weekend. Also looking for more color for both work and casual.

Leaning heavily toward Style Arc Elle for the brown ponte. I think it bags out a little too much to suit a legging pattern.  This will not take too long to sew up, will likely do this in December.

So next up will be a muslin of the Shirt no. 1 pattern from 100 acts of sewing. I have a cotton that may work, although it might be a bit stiff. Also have actual muslin which may be a better choice. Planning on that sometime in the next 3 weeks.

Shirt no 1 muslin done. Well, almost done. No pics yet. Probably not a good choice for SWAP, so I am setting it aside for now.

I have not gotten anything else done except thinking.

Purchased a new Jalie t-shirt top pattern with some birthday money, this will probably make a SWAP appearance.
also got some nice gray rayon jersey with a pattern of blue leaves? birds? you would think I know what it is since I bought it, but no. This will be my muslin fabric for the Jalie pattern. https://jalie.com/jalie2804-empire-crossover-top

I am wearing my Plantain tee from last year, and I really love the way it feels, so this will make an appearance too, I hope.

Found a few patterns in the stash and am mulling them over as well.

I think the purple wool double knit will become a McCalls 6844 cardigan.

Well, a whole lot can change in a month!
I have still sewn nothing for me, but managed to get a Plantain Tee cut out in the coral/blue/tan floral. The fabric is still on the floor, and I'm trying to decide what to cut next, as I really don't want to put it away and get it out again.

I edited my topic post to reflect the use of the floral jersey as a tee, and swapped out my previously made Elles for my plantain tee.

Part of the reason I haven't completed a single SWAP garment is that I am still in the middle of constructing DHs (stalled) fleece jacket, and the machine is threaded up in green. It now occurs to me that I have a serger, and could use that for construction of the TNTs. DUH!  There's that excuse out the window!

Plan for the remainder of January:
Cut out Elles.
Sew up floral plantain and Elles.
Cut out Jalie crossover in muslin fabric.
Sew Jalie crossover.

Good thing I make plans so I can break them!

I have completed the Plantain Tee in the floral jersey, just needs hemming.

I have nearly completed a swing tank in the same jersey. I copied DDs RTW tank, and added a 3/8th inch SA all around.  Then I decided to do a wrap around binding on the neck and armholes, just like the original. This made the armholes too small, and when I went to try it on I ripped the side seam.  It can be fixed, I'll need to cut off the armhole binding and decide on another finish.  I really like the tank, I may even extend the length and make a tunic.

None of this will get done by the end of January, and we have a French exchange student coming to stay with us, and that will knock out February pretty much.

And a garment is finished!  Here I am being silly in my Plantain Tee.

IMG_1456 by wendyr, on Flickr

The tank is nearly done, but I was banished from the sewing room as DH was taking a nap.  Hope to get that done tomorrow, then I'll be on to cutting out a few projects so I can sew them up in increments.

My hopes are always out of proportion with the reality of available time.

This is the first year that I think I will not finish SWAP.  I hope that is not the case, but it's looking pretty dim. 2 easy projects started and only one done. The harder, more detailed work has not even begun, and here it is in February already. I am just going to sew along as I can, picking the SWAP projects that I either need now to round out the wardrobe, or the ones that speak to me, and we'll see how far I get!

OK, the tank is hemmed. Picture later. I like the look, just need to adjust the arm hole so my bra doesn't show. This will probably remain for SWAP, and next up I may do the same tank in the coral, with the adjustments.

Our French student arrives in a week! So likely no sewing for the next 14 days, but I can probably prep a few things and put a plan in place.

Making small headway now. I have adjusted the tank pattern so I hope the bra strap issue will be resolved. Next up: cut and sew the coral tank.  I think I work best taking on small chunks of a project, then moving on to something else, and cycling back to the next chunk of the project.

Still hoping to get the tank sewn, and another project prepped for the next week.

I've sewn up the coral tank's shoulder and side seams, and I love it! I need to adjust the armhole, as it is too small, but this is no big deal. It will wait.

I am moving on to the blue chambray fabric, planning a henley style pullover. I've only gotten as far as washing and pressing the fabric.  I am moving very slowly this time around.

I hope to cut out the pattern pieces this week, it might have to wait until the work week.

Finally cut out the pattern pieces for M 7360. I am going to do a muslin for the body, as both the bust and hip of the finished garment for a straight size 6 measure 37 inches! I graded from a 6 at the top to a 10, which is a lot for me, usually I grade one size up at the hip.

I am going so slowly, I can't imagine finishing this SWAP, but I do have 3 days off from work this week, so hopefully I will at least decide whether this pattern is a go or not, and manage to cut something else out if not.

I'm just doing one thing at a time, and we'll see how far I've gotten by April 30!

April Timeline

I've adjusted my SWAP plan to reflect my current situation. :)

Now I'll have to do a weekly timeline to get this done.
First weekend: Cut the blue hoodie and the Elle pants
First week: Pin and sew these together.
Second weekend: Cut the pattern and fabric for the purple cardigan. Also, cut a shirt no. 1 or a skirt from the same fabric.
Second week: pin and sew this together. Finish off the arm holes for the coral tank. Pin and sew the skirt.

That is enough for now. I'll adjust as the time goes on and things get done. Or not.

Right on time. Elles are done. Cutting the Jalie Jeans today. Running out of time though. Next few days: Cut jeans, assemble backs with pockets. Baste sides together to be sure of fit.

Basting of Jalie jeans is done, I've re-cut the yoke piece to decrease the gaping at the back and provide more coverage. It is a sign of my sewing progress that I have the confidence to just do this instead of dithering. I don't love these, but they will do. I really hope to get most of this done today. Then I have to decide what next:  Do I go with my original plan and color scheme, or do I sub out black as one neutral, keep the floral as my print, and go with blue and purple as accents?

OK, so what if I did this:

Neutral one BROWN:

Tan Jalie jeans IN PROCESS
Brown Elle pants DONE
Natural sweater (cardigan, or pullover)
Previously sewn: linen plantain tee DONE

Neutral two BLUE

Embroidered chambray tunic (M7360) IN PROGRESS
Pullever hoodie DONE
Blue jeans, purchased. or purchased skirt DONE
Skirt (same fabric as hoodie)
Sweater vest: joann fabric, possibly B 8377

Print coral/blue/yellow jersey
Plantain tee DONE
tank DONE
Strap tank

Color 1 Purple wool double knit
pullover based on shirt no 1
skinny pants or leggings.
cardigan

Color 2 coral stretch jersey
Tank top/tunic MOSTLY DONE

I could ditch a fair bit of this and be very OK without purchasing anything. Its a little slim on the tops, but I could add an Plantain Tee in a brown, or I have a navy stripe that I think reads as blue.

UPDATE 4/29

Current finished status and updated to-sew list.

Neutral one BROWN:

1. Tan Jalie jeans DONE
2. Brown Elle pants DONE
3. Previously sewn: linen plantain tee DONE

Neutral two BLUE

4. Pullover hoodie DONE
5. Blue jeans, purchased. or purchased skirt DONE
6. Skirt (same fabric as hoodie) DONE
Sweater vest: joann fabric, possibly B 8377

Print coral/blue/yellow jersey
7. Plantain tee DONE
8. tank DONE

Color 1 Purple wool double knit
pullover based on shirt no 1
Elle Pants
cardigan S 8377 or inder cardi or M 6844.

Color 2 coral stretch jersey
9. Tank top/tunic MOSTLY DONE (may ditch this in favor of a second print, plantain tee and tank, same patterns as the other print.)

Print 2 Brown patchwork burnout
10. Plantain tee DONE
11. Tank DONE

Today's plan:
  • Finish the seams of the coral tank
  • cut and sew long cardigan/vest from ecru sweater knit
  • cut and sew purple Elles
  • cut and sew purple Cardi

I still have tomorrow, lol

I think I am going to ditch the purple altogether, and go for a long sweater vest. I really don't know if I would even wear it, probably not, but I kind of want one.

Other option is to make a Purple layering sweater, short sleeves, with a bit of an a-line flare. I like this idea too. ETA, i just re-counted and I am done!  Just the tank to hem up.

SWAP ANALYSIS

Neutral one BROWN:

1. Tan Jalie Eleonore jeans DONE
2. Brown Elle pants DONE
3. Previously sewn: linen Plantain tee DONE
4. Ecru knit Shirt No. 1 DONE

Neutral two BLUE

5. Pullover hoodie (Meg McElwee's Craftsy class) DONE
6. Blue jeans, purchased DONE
7. Skirt (RTW copy, same fabric as hoodie) DONE

Print coral/blue/yellow jersey
8. Plantain tee DONE
9. Tank (RTW copy0 DONE

Print 2 Brown patchwork burnout
10. Tank (RTW copy) DONE

Color pop: coral stretch jersey

11. Tank top (RTW copy) DONE

Number of patterns used: 6
Number of new patterns: 3 (including 2 RTW copies drafted during SWAP)
New things learned/tried: Stabilizing a loose knit while finishing a seam, creating a binding for seam finishing on interior.

Every single one of these patterns I will use again. I don't think there is a single "Hmm, maybe I won't wear this as much as I thought" item in the lot. I think they all work together much better than any group of items I have sewn. This has to have been my most successful SWAP to date, IMO.
