Question to the moderator ‘Mudcat’ - Can you clarify please.

Neutral 1 - red
Neutral 2 - cobalt blue
Accent - white
Print - red fabric with anchors printed on it
print - light blue and white stripes

Must the last 2 wild cards be one of the above neutrals/accents/prints that was already selected or can it be a new print or accent?

It has to be one of your above listed fabrics, not a new one.  It's in the rules at the end of the colours "Remaining two garments may be made from any one or combination of your neutrals, accent(s) and/or print(s)

I was definitely not going to join this year.  I hadn't even read the rules, but my sewing machine is not working and I needed time away before trying another tack.  The rules are fantastic!  And I bought 3 pieces of black fabric and one other last weekend.  Sounds like the start of a swap!  I do love the planning stage.

I liked this post from Bridgette Raes on coloured neutrals

https://bridgetteraes.com/2017/10/30/colored-neutrals/

I would wear all of those as neutrals quite happily.

Ruthie, I like that site ... so burgundy, teal, forest green and plum.  I think olive green would also work.  I never thought of green as going with everything but it works with brown, black, pink, purple/plum, taupe/beige, reds/oranges and yellow.  Not sure I would mix green with gray though.  It might depend on the shades.

Question of the day - are twinsets counted as one or two garments?

Thanks

I would think two if it's a real twinset, in other words a set of two garments that can be worn together or separately. If it's a faux twinset then one garment.

That's what I thought, just wanted to make sure before I finalized my plan.

I’ve read about SWAP in various blogs over the last few years but this year thought I might have a go.  I notice there are lots of people posting their plans, do we need to do this?  Do we have to post our commitment to do SWAP or do we just post our final SWAP garments when we finish?

It's up to you.  There is no rule that says that you have to post a plan, post on here, tell people, or anything else.  Every year there is always one or two who pop out of the woodwork with a full SWAP.  If you want to post a thread here, feel free.  If you want to keep it quiet until the end, that's fine too.  Whatever works for you.

I know i'm a bit (LOL) late to the game, but I think i'll give this a go. My job has been incredibly stressful for the last few months, and I think I could really use a long term creative project at home to take my mind off it.  Plus, I'm overwhelmed with fabric that has somehow appeared in my sewing studio!

I'll start pulling out and planning asap.

I love the rules, very easy to follow but yet quite a bit of room for creativity!

I am wondering if a Linton tweed would be considered a "print" or not.  If you dissect my tweed, you can pullout fibres of different colours but they are similar in value so the overall effect is more of texture.  It could be worn with another print.

My second question is whether a fabric which is several shades lighter than one of my neutrals would be considered as an accent or a neutral.  The overall effect would be monochromatic.

This is a great set of rules.  I have been working with them over the last couple of days and I can make them work.

Sorry, Susan.  Somehow I missed this question.  I am not familiar with Linton tweed (as opposed to other tweeds) but doing a quick search for "linton tweed" it would appear to me that it depends on the particular weave pattern.

Looking at all these photos here:
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=%22linton+tweed%22+fabric&iar=images&iax=images&ia=images

some read plaid to me and others read solid.  However, I would wear smaller print with just about any of them so from my perspective it's up to you as the designer to decide.

In my view an accent should make the neutrals pop but if you used dark grays or dark purples as your neutral and a light gray as an accent it could make it pop.  So use your best judgement.

So a question about the optional accessory

Quote
Optional Accessory: add one self-made accessory as a signature piece that works with at least two of  your outfits

Quote
Garments such as poncho, cape or wrap must include at least two pattern pieces, be one of your knitted, crocheted or woven items or have stitch work done by you to be considered a garment (otherwise it’s an accessory)

Quote
Terminolgy:
garment: an article of clothing: pants/trousers, skirt, dress, pinafore, cardigan, camisole, tunic, leggings, jacket, shorts, poncho, vest, cape, etc
accessory: an object that is not essential in itself but adds to the beauty, convenience or effectiveness of something else: scarf, jewelry, footwear, wrap, bag, belt, etc

and on the chat thread mudcat said
Quote
accessory: an object that is not essential in itself but adds to the beauty, convenience or effectiveness of something else: scarf, jewelry, footwear, wrap, bag, belt, etc
My point is that we allow knitted and woven items so there is no reason your accessory needs to be from fiber.
so actually a self-made bead necklace which doesn't contain any fibre is OK for the accessory.

On another thread, someone had said to me that the accessory must have at least 3 pieces, but I think from reading this that no that is NOT the case, for a poncho, cape or wrap to be a garment and not an accessory that is the case.
But if I want a scarf as an accessory scarf it can be one piece, the accessory can also be a strand of beads I've strung myself and containing no fabric whatsoever if I want to use my bead stash.

Actually the accessory just needs two pattern pieces and stitch work done by you .... any method you want.  My thinking was you couldn't just go buy some cool embroidered fabric and cut a rectangle with no work done to it. It needed some thought put into it.  Clever people always look for loopholes.  ;D

I can't see that in the rules

Ruthie, that's because they aren't there.  I misread my own rules.  The rules were for ponchos or capes so you couldn't just take a piece of fabric and call it a wrap without doing anything to it.

That two piece minimum wasn't for the accessory (in the case of a scarf).  So your accessory can be one piece even if it's a scarf.  But it's a signature piece so it should be smashing.

Plan:
Choose two neutral colors
Add one accent color and two prints OR two accent colors and one print
Make at least three garments from each neutral color
Make at least one garment from each accent color
Make at least one garment from each print
Remaining two garments may be made from any one or combination of your neutrals, accent(s) and/or print(s)
Create multiple outfits of at least two garments that work for your personal style
Each garment must work with a minimum of two outfits

Question about the print or prints. As the availability of suitable prints in my stash (fabric resources) is likely to drive the colour choices

two accent colors and one print - does the print need to contain all 4 of the colours (neutral 1, neutral 2, accent 1 and accent 2)?

one accent color and two prints - do each of the two prints need to contain all 3 of the colours (neutral 1, neutral 2, accent)?

A small clarification - I think in past years SWAP has sometimes been limited to human beings.
Could we do one for a doll or a pet ?

While there's nothing in the rules to preclude you from doing so I would lean towards saying that it should be limited to human beings to keep within the spirit of prior SWAPS.  And, here I thought I had covered everything.

** However, I would be quite interested in seeing what kind of pet would tolerate a designer wardrobe.   :bth_smiley-laugh-dog:

G'day Mudcat,

I'm hoping to start taking the photos soon-ish as it looks like work is going to get really busy toward the end of the month and into May.
Just wondering if you've had a chance to think about  the photo guidelines yet?

Hi, Mudcat :)

Another query about photos here. Do you know yet what the photo deadline will be? I know some years in the past it was just a week (or a little over) after the sewing deadline and some people couldn't manage due to weather or travel. So I guess I'm hoping we'll have 2 weeks (or even 3) after the deadline to get everything posted. Thanks in advance!

I will check with DL about the photos. Probably need a new separate gallery.  Deadline will be about a week later (to allow a weekend for finalizing).
I will add a separate topic with details soon.
